England is home to many grand stately homes that offer visitors a look into its rich history and culture. These splendid estates combine impressive architecture, beautiful gardens and touching stories from the past. Here are three of the most appealing ones to explore.
Chatsworth House, Derbyshire
Often called “the Palace of the Peak,” Chatsworth House has been home to the Cavendish family since the 16th century. The surrounding gardens are world-famous for their fountains, sculptures, and glasshouses. Visitors can also explore a working farmyard and an adventure playground, accessible through a secret passage that leads to woodland fun with climbing towers, slides, swings, and water play. Combining centuries of history with modern exhibitions and cultural events, Chatsworth remains a living estate and a perfect destination for families.
Highclere Castle, Hampshire
Famous as the filming location of the TV series Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle is one of England’s most well-known country houses. Built in the 17th century and redesigned in the 19th, it sits within over 1,000 acres of parkland, offering lovely trees and rolling landscapes in every season. Exhibitions tell the story of the Carnarvon family and their link to Tutankhamun’s tomb. The castle is also a sought-after venue for smaller and more private weddings, where couples and guests can enjoy a setting as engaging and magical as any scene from Downton Abbey.
Castle Howard, North Yorkshire
Located near York, Castle Howard is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The estate’s vast grounds feature lakes, temples and woodlands, perfect for a leisurely walk. Today, The 21st Century Renaissance (文艺复兴) project shows its effort to restore and preserve this historic home, with visitors able to witness its transformation. A visit in 2025 promises a grand reveal of a once-in-a-generation project transforming the House’s inner spaces, including restoring the lost tapestry Drawing Room. Visitors can join guided tours to explore its dog-friendly gardens, with seasonal events from summer concerts to Christmas markets adding even more appeal to this grand estate.

Nervous and uncertain, I entered Room 224 of O’Connell Hall for my first writing class at university. I had always been doubting about my writing ability and feared that college-level assignments would be too difficult. However, the class guided us step by step, helping us adjust to the new level. Once I became familiar with the classroom, I realized that college writing offered not only greater challenges but also more freedom. We could make decisions about our own essays, which allowed me to explore my writing in ways I had never imagined.
One valuable lesson was the variety of writing genres (体裁). Our first assignment, a rhetorical (修辞的) analysis, was completely new to me. By reading examples and discussing them in class I learned how to structure my own analysis successfully. Later, we practiced other forms of writing, each quite different from what I had done in high school.
Another concept that I plan to take with me for the rest of my writing career is understanding who the audience is. One major task that focused on a specific audience was an argumentative essay. Even though my paper was about patients with life-threatening illnesses and their rights, I directed my paper towards those who do not support the treatment of terminal (晚期的) illnesses. While I could have written this to inform patients and families, my main goal was to persuade those against it. After directing this argument towards a specific audience, I learned that this is an extremely important strategy which will generate a better outcome, if the audience is taken into account when writing.
Finally, evaluating others’ work helped me improve. Peer (同龄人) review offered suggestions and showed me different writing styles. Reading professional writers’ work also taught me writing skills I could apply. Through these experiences, I have significantly increased my understanding of writing a good piece. Leaving this class, I feel I have made the jump from high school to college. Like running a marathon, the beginning is always toughest, but persevering and finishing is extremely rewarding.
4. Why did the author initially feel nervous at the writing class?
A. She lacked confidence in writing.
B. She couldn’t decide on her own essays.
C. She feared of interacting with professors.
D. She was unfamiliar with writing techniques.
5. What did the author learn from the first assignment?
A. How to express personal opinions freely.
B. How to write a complete story in English.
C. How to organize texts in a new writing genre.
D. How to convince readers with strong arguments.
6. Why is targeting a specific audience important?
A. To collect more information.
B. To help deliver ideas directly.
C. To show respect for the readers.
D. To make writing more persuasive.
7. The author compares college writing to running a marathon to show that both ______.
A. involve competing with others
B. start hard but end with satisfaction
C. motivate beginners to achieve success
D. mark a big step from one stage to another
C
Researchers in Washington University in St. Louis have developed a filter that treats wastewater and also generates electricity—an advance that could reshape energy use at treatment plants.
The new system uses bacteria to produce an electric charge while breaking down organic material otherwise seen as waste. The findings from the lab of Zhen He, a professor of energy, environmental and chemical engineering, were detailed in the academic journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology. The research fits into a growing set of technologies that pushes back against the traditional view of regarding wastewater as waste and looks instead to put it to beneficial use. Depending on how thoroughly it is treated, recovered water can be repurposed for anything from “undrinkable” uses like crop-watering to drinking water.
The Washington U. team’s new filter, however, provides an added bonus. The system uses a cloth to collect organic matter from the wastewater and to provide bacteria with a place to settle. Then, as bacteria consume the organic materials, electrons are released and gathered by the cloth, creating electricity. Steel around the filter sends the electric current from the “bacteria fuel cell” to an external circuit. That two-way function is what makes the electrode unique.
Treating one cubic meter of wastewater could, in theory, generate 20 watts of power for an hour. That means a larger unit or a collection of units could power lights or larger electrical devices! The team, next, aims to develop further and make it leap into the real world. Ideally, He would love to see the filters used by urban wastewater treatment facilities. But He says a more likely, transitional step could be for the filters to first catch on in smaller individual industrial factories that have wastewater to treat. The ultimate aim is to change wastewater treatment from an energy user into a power source.
“Is it really a waste?” He asked. “Or can we treat it as a resource?” Viewing wastewater as a resource rather than waste enables sustainable energy generation and promotes environmental protection, presenting a mutually beneficial approach to wastewater treatment.
8. What determines the use of the recovered water?
A. The storage time. B. The extent of treatment.
C. The amount of bacteria. D. The source of original water.
9. What does the underlined phrase “an added bonus” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Power generation. B. Less pollution.
C. Water purification. D. More electrons.
10. What might be the next step for the team?
A. Exploring potential markets of the filters.
B. Improving the performance of the system.
C. Fitting the filters in urban wastewater plants.
D. Popularizing the filters in small-sized workshops.
11. Why does He raise questions in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight wastewater-not-waste concept.
B. To recognize the achievement of the research.
C. To stress the urgency of the wastewater treatment.
D. To discuss the possible direction for further study.

Ten years ago I found it difficult to read books. When I got to a passage that required more intense focus, I put the book aside and reached for my phone which seemed to be always ringing. Since literature has always been important in my life, I was disappointed and surprised. As a psychiatrist (精神病学家) with an interest in what shapes our behaviors, I wondered why.
I thought of the Nobel Prize-winning researcher Nikolaas Tinbergen’s experiment with herring gulls (银鸥). Herring gulls have a red spot on their beak. When the chicks are hungry, they peck (啄) at the parent’s spot and are fed. In the 1940s, Tinbergen painted a red spot on a pencil, a spot larger than the one on the beak. When he put the pencil in the nest, something strange happened: The chicks stopped pecking at their parents and pecked at the pencil. Even though the parents were in the nest and the pen didn’t give them any food, the hungry birds chose the pencil again and again. Tinbergen called the large red spot on the pencil a “superstimulus”, which is so strong that it beats what nature has developed.
I came to realize why my interest in books fell flat. Hand in hand with time spent on screens, our ability to focus has worsened. With evolving artificial intelligence, companies, like Facebook and TikTok, for whom our time is their money have managed to grab our attention. They have been given the opportunity to create content so tailored to each of us that it feels as if it is coming from someone who knows our innermost being and there is nothing as rewarding in the real world-which thus becomes even more difficult to ignore.
Any way out? Instead of jumping in the discussion whether we are for or against technology, just be aware that every time we log in, an artificial intelligence worth billions of dollars is trying to figure out: How can I get him or her not to log out? But long story short, with the distraction device in another room, I am able to read as usual.
12. What was the author’s problem?
A. He was experiencing vision loss.
B. His mobile phone failed to work.
C. He was tired of reading literature.
D. His lifelong hobby was outcompeted.
13. The author mentions Nikolaas Tinbergen’s experiment to ______.
A. explain a mystery of herring gulls
B. figure out a solution to his problem
C. present differences between species
D. throw light on the cause of his confusion
14. With what do Facebook and TikTok seize our attention?
A. Up-to-date content. B. Handsome rewards.
C. Immediate comfort. D. Personalized newsfeed.
15. What is the author’s proposed solution in the last paragraph?
A. Launching an open discussion.
B. Quitting using electric devices.
C. Keeping the screens out of reach.
D. Developing decision-making abilities.

For many, watching television is a way to enter a state of rest. ____16____ As such a sleeper, you may wonder how your nightly habit works. After all, we’ve long been told that screens at night can secretly mess with our body clock. So to TV or not to TV? It is a bit complicated.
Television is loud, and typically, people need quiet to sleep. ____17____ Aric Prather, a psychologist, tells us it’s not exactly clear why some people can fall asleep with a TV on, while others can’t. However, he says our brain can limit sensory processing, which allows us to sleep even if there is noise in the background.
Molly Atwood, a psychiatry professor, explains that the reason why most people are comforted by the TV is that it provides background noise that allows them to calm or distract their mind from daily chores. We have sleep drive in our body. However, an anxious state can cancel it. In such a case, the comforting effect of TV becomes particularly important for relaxation. ____18____
Dr. Meena Khan, a sleep medicine physician from Ohio tells a different story. ____19____ “Watching TV can delay going to bed, especially if the person watching is engaged in the program,” she says. While our bodies do have the system to filter out sounds, they can’t remove all. Extreme volume or light changes can get us awake, disrupting our sleep.
If you are struggling and feel like TV is the only option, ____20____ After all, they have a say about the topic.
A. Reach out to professionals.
B. Turn to your friends or family.
C. In fact, some can’t fall asleep without it.
D. Others regard TV as an annoyance to their sleep.
E. If someone is having issues with sleep, TV can be a main factor.

I still remember the first time I met Leo. He stood at the center of a group of boys, telling a joke that made everyone laugh, his own laughter the warmest. “Popular guy,” I thought. I’m Max, the new boy. My family had moved from northern England to London for Dad’s new job. At 15, surrounded by strangers and far from old friends. I felt shy and lonely.
Few classmates noticed me. Leo was the only one who reached out: he drew me into his circle. We soon grew close, sharing secrets and trusting each other fully.
But two years later, everything changed when Leo’s father died in a car accident. His family moved to a smaller apartment to manage financially. Once close to his dad, Leo became quiet, moody, and lost interest in studies. He pushed friends away though we sometimes saw each other, we were not as close as before.
Three months ago, after a football game, I went to the cloakroom (衣帽间) for my bag. There I saw Leo going through others` coat pockets, a wallet not his in hand! I froze, heart pounding. Leo’s face turned red. He said in a low voice. “I’ll put it back,” and hurried to do so. I walked away silently, feeling heavy inside.
Weeks after that, the moment kept coming back to me. I was torn between doing what was right and staying true to the friend who once saved me from loneliness. The conflict worsened last week when the £500 raised at our school charity fair was stolen. The head teacher asked anyone with clues to speak up — my throat went dry at the news.
This weekend, I gathered enough courage to ask Leo about the theft. He wasn’t home, so I waited in his bedroom. Feeling cold, I put on his jacket hanging on the chair. My fingers brushed thick paper notes in the pocket.

(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

D. mark a big step from one stage to another
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B

【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. A

【答案】12. D 13. D 14. D 15. C

F. Why, then, do some people find something like TV series relaxing?
G. So, here comes the question: Is it really bad to fall asleep with the TV on?

Hi everyone,
This is Li Hua. I understand our recent dilemma about whether to use AI for our drama appreciation paper. Personally, I believe AI can be a useful tool, offering insights and structured frameworks. However, it should complement, not replace, our own analysis and understanding.
My suggestion is to use AI for research assistance, gathering relevant information and sources. We can then discuss and analyze these findings ourselves, ensuring our paper reflects our unique perspectives and understanding of the drama. Let’s meet tomorrow to outline our plan and assign tasks accordingly.
Best regards,
Li Hua

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

We decided to go to the head teacher’s office with the money the next day.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Pulling them out, I was shocked: it was exactly £500. My hands trembled violently as I stared at the crumpled notes. Just then, Leo walked in, freezing at the door with his face turning as pale as paper. Without hesitation, I held up the money, my voice tight with mixed feelings. He lowered his head, and his voice choked: "My mom’s illness got worse — I had no choice but to steal it for her medicine..." I patted his trembling shoulder gently, recalling how he once pulled me out of loneliness. "We’ll fix this together," I said firmly, watching tears roll down his cheeks.
We decided to go to the head teacher’s office with the money the next day. Leo’s hands clenched the money tightly as we walked, his eyes filled with anxiety and regret. The head teacher listened patiently, his expression softening as Leo apologized sincerely and explained his hardship. To our relief, he praised our courage and offered to organize a school donation for Leo’s mom. Gradually, Leo regained his warmth, and we studied side by side to catch up on his lessons. Our friendship, formed through trust and understanding, grew deeper than ever.
