I saved the grain (谷物) carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.
Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot then but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.
With my new grain to store (储存), I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots (锅) one for rice and one for wheat.
Next I made a clay oven and some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake (烘烤) bread I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.
Soon after that. I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore (探索) the island by sea.
I tried to turn over the ship’s boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I still made a decision to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.
When it was time to launch, I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years to continue working. I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.

“They have started to fight!” I cried. Ben Gunn and I ran towards the ship. As we ran we heard some pistol (手枪) shots. Then in front of me I saw a Union Jack (米字旗) flying in the air above the trees.
The flag was flying from a wooden fort (堡垒) that stood on a hill looking over the beach. Ben Gunn stopped. “Your friends are there,” he said.“Join them. When you want me, come to where you found me. Come alone, and carry something white so that I will know it’s you.”
Just then there was aloud bang (巨响) . A cannon ball (炮弹) came flying through the air, and we both ran off in opposite directions. The shots continued for another hour. I moved quietly through the trees. The pirates’ flag, the Jolly Roger, was flying on the Hispaniola.
Down on the beach below the fort, the pirates were breaking up the rowing boat. Further down the beach there was a large fire. One of the pirates’ boats was coming and going between the beach and the ship. I also noticed some white rocks and l knew that was where Ben Gunn’s boat was. I then ran to the fort where l found my friends. We sat and told each other our stories.
The doctor told his story first,“Six of the original crew (原来的船员) were still on the ship. They were all together at the front of the ship. When we heard that you, Jim, were ashore with the mutineers (叛变者). Hunter and I decided to go ashore (在岸上) , too. We took another small boat and landed at a different part of the beach to the mutineers. Hunter stayed to guard the boat and I went into the woods. After about one hundred metres, I found this fort. As you can see, it has a strong fence (栅栏) and it is in a good position. There is a stream running through it and it even has a small wooden house in the middle with holes in the walls for guns to shoot through. It is a perfect place to defend ourselves against attackers (攻击者) .”

Imagine you are in a boat far out at sea. Suddenly, you hear a loud, deep, and beautiful song. Just as you are starting to enjoy it, the song ends. Then, it starts again. Who is out there making such music?
It sounds like the music that people make. But in fact, this music is made by some species of whales. According to scientists, some whales express their feelings of loneliness through these songs. They may even sing the songs to show their sadness over the loss of a loved one.
Each of these whale songs can last from a few minutes to half an hour, and it is then repeated. The singing can go on for hours, or even days. It is very loud, and can be heard over great distances. What is more amazing is that whales from the same social group sing the same song at the same time even when they are very far apart (相隔). On the other hand, whales that belong to different social groups sing different songs even when they are together. The music may change over time, but whales belonging to the same group always sing the same songs. Research shows that this helps the whales to communicate important information to one another within the group.
Although scientists have been studying whale songs for a long time, they continue to wonder why whales sing. They also haven’t found out the different meanings of these songs. But maybe this is not a bad thing, for the beauty of nature often lies in its mystery. And the mystery could be part of the reason why the song sounds so beautiful to the human ear.
57. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To express the main idea. B. To draw the readers’ interest.
C. To provide the background. D. To tell the readers about a story.
58. What can we know from the passage?
A. Whales express their all feelings through singing.
B. Whales in the same sea area sing the same songs.
C. Whales in the same group can communicate well.
D. Whales sing so loud that they influence each other.
59. What does the underlined word “this” mean in the last paragraph ?

B. Scientists have divided the whales into different groups.
C. Scientists haven’t completely known what whale songs mean.
D. Scientists haven’t clearly known how long whale songs can last.
60. What may be the best title of the passage?

Chinese scientists have created the world’s first robot, GEAIR, that can finish the whole plant breeding process. This is important for hybrid breeding (杂交育种).
Hybrid breeding helps plants grow stronger and produce more food. Yuan Longping created hybrid rice that has fed many Chinese people. According to Cell Press, the process usually means taking away the stamens (雄蕊) of the female plant (雌株) and then putting pollen (花粉) from the male plant onto the female plant. This helps the new plants get the best qualities from both parents. For example, if you mix a male plant that doesn’t get sick easily with a female plant that makes a lot of fruit, you can get a new plant that has both of these great qualities.
However, hybrid breeding needs workers to do cross-pollination (异花授粉) again and again in a short time. This work takes a lot of time and energy. GEAIR solves the problem. It uses AI visual recognition and positioning (视觉识别和定位) technology to move among crops. After finding flowers, it uses robotic arms to do cross-pollination and finish the whole process.
Building the robot was difficult because leaves get in the way, and flowers are very small. Traditional computer cannot easily find them in real time. To fix this, the research team trained a new model with 12,800 pictures of flowers. With this model, GEAIR can pollinate each flower in 15 seconds at a cost much lower than a worker’s yearly pay.
86. What is the name of the robot that can finish the whole plant breeding process?
87. What is one advantage of hybrid breeding?
88. What technology does GEAIR use to move among crops?
89. Why was building GEAIR difficult? (Give one reason.)

As a Grade 9 student, I believe a colourful life is a happy life. Here is how I use three things to enrich my daily life.
First, as we all known colour can change my moods. I like wearing bright clothes like green and yellow T-shirts. They make me feel energetic and cheer me up, especially on busy school days. Second, the art world is another good choice. There are lots of different types of music. I like listening to classical music best because it has more lasting value. Finally, I think choosing TV programs wisely is also a good to enjoy life. Instead of watching short videos on the phone, I prefer documentaries about nature and science. I can learn a lot about nature, history and real-life events from them. They are like windows, opening up the amazing world for me.
In these simple ways, I hope my life can become more meaningful, colourful, and enjoyable.
