It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring California. His 90-pound pit bull (斗牛犬), Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging him away.
Benham, a thin, fit, 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly,” he told CBS13, “the only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’.” He lowered his shoulder and ran quickly towards the bear. But it only seized Buddy tightly. Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open but the jaw was locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting — punching the bear over and over around its mouth and nose. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied. He had a bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.
“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He picked up Buddy, put him into his car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the procedure through a window, waiting for a miracle.
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”
4. Why did the author mention the weight of the bear in paragraph 2?
A. To prove the excitement of Benham.
B. To describe the fear in Buddy’s heart.
C. To indicate the difficulty of the rescue.
D. To show the bear’s starvation and fierceness.
5. How was the dog finally saved from the bear?
A. Benham defeated the beast by grabbing its throat.
B. Benham ran towards the beast with dropped shoulder.
C. Benham punched the beast’s mouth and nose repeatedly.
D. Benham forced open the beast’s mouth by unlocking its jaw.
6. What can we infer about Benham and Buddy?
A. Buddy once saved Benham. B. They used to share a shelter.
C. Benham had no kid but Buddy. D. They had very close relationship.
7. Which words can best describe Benham?
A. Smart and hard-working. B. Calm and physically strong.
C Brave and kind-hearted. D. Knowledgeable and reliable.

While AI’s influence on various industries like healthcare is widely discussed, the legal profession has received less attention. In fact, the business of law is well-positioned to achieve the highest ROI (投资回报率) from using AI.
Law firms (公司) are seen as traditional but most have used machine learning for years. In the business of law, AI-driven time and cost savings are typically very high. The benefits have led to the appearance of a new type of law firm-AI-centric (aka AI-native) law firms. Staff (全体职工) and lawyers at AI-native firms make the most of AI for various tasks such as research. AI-native law firms also use AI to service customers who require personalized treatment.
Every day, junior associates (初级律师) need to work fast and correctly, yet never miss anything important. The work can tire them, leading to mistakes. AI can do in seconds what takes days for a junior associate. Speed gives AI a great role in the legal field, with ROI well beyond the “traditional” 10 to 20 percent. AI-centric firms can grow without increasing the support staff. Wherever AI reduces costs, it frees up funds for marketing development. AI makes marketing communications faster and easier for law firms, as it does for other businesses.
AI’s positive effect on work satisfaction is often underappreciated. According to a 2023 Thomson Reuters survey, lawyers at AI-native firms often send repetitive tasks to AI. Support staff and junior associates become, in effect, supervisors (监督人) of AI. This truly improves work satisfaction.
Are law firms jumping on board and going AI-native in large numbers? Surprisingly the answer is no. According to another survey 60% had no plans to use AI. That’s good news for the other 40%. The legal profession is among the industries achieving the best ROI from the use of AI. Law firms should “get it” and enjoy greater growth and profitability.
8. What makes the new kind of law firm special?
A. The high ROI. B. The effective use of AI.
C. Focusing on AI cheating cases. D. Providing personalized treatment.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Why AI is helpful to law firms. B. What high ROI means to law firms.
C. When AI will take over traditional law firms. D. How law firms deal with marketing challenges.
10. What did the Thomson Reuters survey find?
A. The legal profession often has high profitability.
B. Support staff are very important to a law firm.
C. AI contributes to increasing job satisfaction.
D. Law firms are leading in using AI.
11. Which of the following will the author probably agree with?
A. It’s time for law firms to go all in on AI. B. Safety is the major concern for law firms.
C. AI technology should grow alongside the law. D. Law firm can be new and old at the same time.
D
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), along with Chinese Kungfu and Peking Opera, is one of China’s cultural symbols recognized worldwide. It is a gem of Chinese civilization, and it has also made great contributions to world civilization by improving people’s health and promoting social progress.
There used to be a debate in China about whether TCM or Western medicine was better, and arguments can still be heard today. But actually, TCM and western medicine are two different medical theoretical systems that can not replace each other. In some aspects such as surgery, Western medicine is better than TCM, but in other areas, such as recovery after surgery and treatment of chronic (慢性的) diseases, TCM is more effective. This is why some Chinese hospitals provide both TCM and Western medicine treatments. A combination of both has been accepted by many Chinese people as the most effective treatment.
Today it has reached a consensus to promote and innovate TCM in Chinese society. The Chinese government has formulated policies to support the development and innovation of TCM,with a view to establishing a Chinese healthcare development model paying equal attention to both.
The supportive policies of the Chinese Government will focus on three aspects. The first is the strengthening of TCM services in medical institutions. The second is to apply Internet technology to TCM management, including setting up a database containing TCM electronic medical records and prescriptions (处方). The third is to give better play to the advantages of TCM, especially acupuncture (针灸) and naprapathy (推拿). The function of TCM in disease prevention and recovery will also be enhanced.
As long as TCM keeps its core strengths and respects the rules of development and innovation, it will surely be able to maintain its vitality and bring more benefits to people in China and the world.
12. What advantage does Western medicine have over TCM?
A. It is more effective in surgery.
B. It is more successful in recovery after surgery.
C. It is a symbol of national civilization.
D. It is more effective in treating chronic diseases.
13. What do the underlined words “a consensus” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. A virtue. B. An agreement.
C. A mystery. D. An argument.
14. Which of the following aspects is NOT included in the Chinese government supports for TCM?
A. It calls on the public to support TCM.
B. It combines Internet Technology with TCM.
C. It makes better use of the advantages of TCM.
D. It increases TCM services in hospitals and medical centers.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. TCM Beats Western Medicine. B. Chinese Government Promotes TCM.
C. TCM Breaks New Ground. D. The Significance of TCM.

B Benham ran towards the beast with dropped shoulder.
C. Brave and kind-hearted. D. Knowledgeable and reliable.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. D 7. C

【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段后两句“Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging him away. (贝纳姆急忙转身去看那头野兽,他估计这头野兽重约350磅,在大约100英尺开外。刹那间,那头熊咬住了巴迪的脑袋,开始把它拖走)”以及第三段第一句“Benham, a thin, fit, 24-year-old, took off after them. (贝纳姆,一位身材瘦削、体格健壮的24岁男子,跟在它们后面出发了)”可知,熊重约350磅,而Benham很瘦,他要从这么重的熊口中救Buddy,难度很大。所以提到熊的重量是为了表明救援的困难程度。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段后两句“Benham resorted to street fighting — punching the bear over and over around its mouth and nose. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods. (本哈姆采取了近身搏斗的方式 —— 一遍又一遍地击打熊的嘴巴和鼻子。这起作用了。熊放下了狗,然后跑进了树林里)”可知,Benham通过反复击打熊的嘴和鼻子,使熊放开了狗。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked.
Surprisingly the answer is no According to another survey 60% had no plans to use AI.

Today, it has reached a consensus to promote and innovate TCM in Chinese society.
