The Words That Changed Everything
I still remember the day clearly. It was during 7th grade. Two classes were going to play a game outside our classrooms. I was excited to join, but a classmate refused to let me play on her team.
Her refusal was enough to make someone feel unwanted. One of my friends asked her again and again, but the mean girl did not allow me to play. Back then, at eleven years of age, I did not know that someone’s opinion should not decide my 1 . It was a terrible moment, enough to hurt my heart badly.
2 , this wasn’t the only time I felt that way. Whether at school or home, I always felt down. People often blamed (责备) me for things I didn’t do, and I felt like I was falling behind everyone in every part of life.
However, life took a turn for the better in 9th grade. I accidentally scored high in an English test. My teacher’s surprise was clear, and so was the admiration in her eyes. Her encouragement was the first drop of rain, bringing new hope and life. She liked my work and lifted my 3 with a pat on the shoulder.
That moment had an amazing effect on me—it was a push to keep the same pace (节奏), 4 me to put all my effort to score good in every subject.
My science teacher also played an important role. I remember the exact words: “Seeing such a bright kid makes my heart fill with 5 .”
The encouragement and kindness from my teacher inspired (激励) me to continue working hard.
The feelings with those 6 memories remind me how small words of kindness play a powerful role in our lives. They can cause a complete paradigm shift Now, I didn’t care who looked down on me, or who refused me, I was ready to face the world with confidence.
Over time, writing became my way to express what I felt inside, a way to continue the legacy (精神传承) of my teachers, in 7 kind words. I started writing poems and thoughts about life and the world around me. Each word is a step forward, helping me understand myself better and giving me courage.
Just as that small encouragement changed everything for me, I hope my words will express a message to others: kindness 8 , and small acts of encouragement can change a life.

Laughter, Circles, and a Lesson Learned
I was just watching my little sister Lilly while Mom was busy on an important call. But somehow, the situation quickly turned into a total disaster.
At first, I tried to 1 Lilly with her favorite puzzle, but she got bored after a while. Then, I suggested reading her favorite book, but she threw it halfway across the room before we even reached the middle.
I needed to 2 her down, and fast. Looking around the room, I noticed the mini basketball hoop (圈) attached to my door with two suction cups (吸盘). Inspiration struck (猛地想到). I pulled it down and stuck it on my forehead. It must have looked 3 , because Lilly started laughing immediately.
Encouraged, I pulled the hoop off my head with a loud sound POP! Lilly clapped and laughed, saying, “Do again!” We 4 this several times, and her laughter filled the room.
After a few 5 , Lilly suddenly stopped and pointed at my forehead. “Circles!”she said. At first, I didn’t understand, but when I checked the mirror, I saw two bright red, perfectly round circles on my forehead where the suction cups had been.
When Mom walked into the room later, she was shocked, trying to hold back a laugh. “What happened?” she asked. I explained the situation. Although Mom tried to stay serious, I could tell she found it funny.
By the next morning, the red circles had turned into dark purple marks, making me afraid of going to school. At lunch, my best friend Pete 6 them curiously.
“Jake, what’s up with your head?” he asked loudly.
Instead of hiding, I decided to tell the truth. “I stuck a basketball hoop on my head to make my sister laugh.” To my surprise, my friends didn’t laugh at me. Instead, they started sharing their own embarrassing stories, turning my disaster into a moment of 7 .
That day, I realized that sometimes the best way to handle a disaster is to laugh it off and 8 it.

In the ninth grade, we started to learn chemistry. Soon a special element bismuth (铋) 1 me. It has amazing colors and unique shapes. Whenever there was a chance, I’d talk about it again and again, but some classmates would roll their eyes and let out a strange laugh.
One day, I was in a terrible mood, and decided to play games on the school pad when the lab work was done. However, Ms. Hale stressed her rule: only homework is allowed, no drawing or games, which did 2 my mood. I sank in my chair, thinking angrily, “Why can’t she just cut us a break? What a stupid teacher!”
My 3 seemed to grow blindly until Ms. Hale asked me to go over. At that moment, I thought that I’d spoken my thoughts out loud and she had heard me! My heart began to race, but my movement was very 4 . I felt it might last ages before I reached her desk. To my surprise, she handed me a small soft bag and said, “I went to a science teachers’ fair yesterday. Open it and see what I got for you.” I slowly opened it. A tiny shining bismuth crystal came into view.
“I saw this and thought you would love it,” she continued.
I froze for a moment—and then smiled from ear to ear. I thanked her until I ran out of 5 . But as I sat back down, staring at that crystal, regret washed over me. Here I’d been 6 her, but she’d remembered what I loved, going out of her way to bring me a gift. Memories flooded back: she always made her classes engaging; she would stay after school to explain my questions; she would listen patiently when I 7 my love for bismuth.
For the rest of the year, I tried to make up for my ill thoughts. I helped her carry lab supplies to the classroom, stayed late to organize her element posters, and once, we even chatted about bismuth’s uses in medicine. I told her again how much the crystal meant—not just a gift, but a chance for a teacher and a student to 8 each other.

I was late for the school bus and rushing to get ready. My dog, Tippy, got to the front door and lay down in front of the bus—his way of asking to be hugged and touched. But I ignored (忽略) it, 1 to the waiting bus and disappeared quickly.
However, that afternoon, when I came home, Mom said to me 2 , “Honey, I have some sad news to tell you. This morning, while you were at school, Tippy was hit by a car and got killed. I’m so sorry.”

A Big Jump
I don’t like heights. I never-have: I don’t mind being in a tall building or on a plane. But looking out over the top or a tall building, or even down from a tree, makes me feel a little dizzy (眩晕的).
I 1 this because it has a lot to do with something that happened to me a few years ago, I was with my friends at a lake, and we were having a good time swimming, boating, and playing cards.
On one of our camping trips, we came across a huge rock. It was much taller than a house, and it was right beside the 2 . The other kids thought it would be a great place for swimming. “It even was a perfect jumping rock!” said one of my friends. You can think about how I felt. I never told my friends about my 3 of heights. There was no way I was jumping off that rock!
I got in the water and swam around. I was the best swimmer, so I thought just in case something happened I would be in the water to 4 .
Everyone jumped off the rock many times, except me. “Hey John! You haven’t jumped yet,” said one of the girls. “Are you scared?” joked one of the boys. Soon, they were all chanting, “Jump, jump, jump!”
I was so ashamed that I didn’t dare to say I was afraid. So I 5 the rock. Everyone was watching as I looked over the edge. Only Wendy was in the water far below. I just couldn’t do it.
Suddenly, a branch fell and 6 Wendy on her head. I called to her again and again, but she didn’t answer. I was the closest person to her and the best swimmer. I had no choice.
I jumped. Actually, I dove (跳水) in to get close to her more 7 . At that moment, I lost all fear. I pulled her to the bank. She coughed a little, but she was fine.

One day, Brian and his grandfather decided to spend a weekend with an old friend, Marcus, who was a very famous chess player. The next morning, when Marcus discovered that his pieces had been 3 in a thousand colors, instead of being pleased, he was very angry. He had a very important match to play. No matter how lovely all those colors were, it would be impossible to play chess without being able to know which 4 were which, and even more difficult now that the squares of the board were covered with a painting.
