When handball was introduced to Sri Lankan schools in 2010,I wanted to bring it to my school,St Anthony's,
in the remote village of Wasalakotte in central Sri Lanka.Handball is a fascinating game which combines speed,
strength, technical precision, skill and teamwork. As a new sport,I saw the potential in it as a golden opportunity
for our school as we had never earned a place in traditional sports.
The boys were immediately interested and 40 students signed up to play.Training started early in the morning
before class and continued after school until it was dark. After three months of tireless training we were able to
compete at the all-island school handball tournament.
Our boys played remarkably well and reached the semifinals. And that was when the real game started.
Students, parents, and teachers from Colombo schools joined forces against us,saying they wouldn't allow the cup
to be taken out of Colombo. They considered it a shame to lose a match against boys from a rural village school,
who couldn't even speak English due to lack of staff and opportunities. Some Colombo students wore leaves and
danced and sang Vedda songs to laugh at our boys.Even the referees (favoured the Colombo schools, resulting
in our team being robbed of the victory they deserved.
A few weeks after the defeat,I met the national handball coach to discuss our treatment by the referees. He
apologized and offered to send a Korean professional handball coach to our school.Coach Vonho arrived as
promised and turned our handball team from good to great in just two weeks.
The following year, nobody could stop our team from winning the all-island schools handball championship.
Our team of 14 boys played so well that teachers from other schools advised their players to watch our matches.
And I was greatly honored to have shown the boys that dreams can be fulfilled.

Smartphones, tablets and computers are everywhere, and children are growing up with them as a regular part
of their lives. While these devices offer plenty of educational and entertainment value, they also bring up concerns
about how they affect kids'social skills.Experts are starting to look more closely at the potential connection
between too much screen time and behaviors that show signs of autism ()
Kids who spend a lot of time on screens often miss out on chances to develop crucial social skills.Interacting
with others in person helps them learn how to pick up on physical signs, understand different tones of voice, and
react appropriately in social situations. These face-to-face moments are key to building empathy and emotional
intelligence.By contrast, communicating through texts, social media,or gaming platforms often leaves out these
important elements, making it harder for children to fully develop their conversational skills and emotional
connections.
Some researchers have started drawing links between too much screen time and behaviors that mirror those
seen in autism.Though the evidence isn't clear yet, journals like Psychology Today point to a possible connection
between heavy screen use and social withdrawal, trouble starting conversations and difficulty maintaining eye
contact-all behaviors typically associated with autism. On top of that, increased screen time is often tied to rising
levels of social anxiety and loneliness, which can lead kids to withdraw even further into their digital worlds,
cutting off real-life social opportunities.
That said, technology isn't necessarily bad for kids when used properly.Digital devices can be great tools for
learning and connecting when balanced with real-world experiences.Encouraging kids to join activities like team
sports, clubs,or community events helps them build social skills that screens can't replace.
Parents can play a big role in setting healthy screen habits.Establishing tech-free times during meals or before
bed can help create a more balanced routine.Plus, doing things together that involve technology-like educational
games or creative projects-can show kids how to use devices in positive, meaningful ways.
28.What does the underlined word "empathy"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.The habit of quick reactions.
B.The courage for social challenges.
C.The skill to communicate digitally.
D.The ability to understand others'feelings.
29.Why does the author mention Psychology Today in paragraph 3?
A.To provide supporting evidence.
B.To prove a certain cause of autism.
C.To propose a treatment for anxiety.
D.To confirm a definitive conclusion.

30.What does the author suggest kids do?
A.Replace screens with sports.
B.Organize community events.
C.Participate in real-life activities.
D.Connect through digital devices.
31.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Positive influence of screen habits.
B.Parental guidance for screen use.
C.The value of tech-free family time.
D.The creativity of educational games.

The first week of July was the hottest week on record-yet another sign that climate change is"out of
control",the UN secretary general said.Punishing heat waves and extreme weather events like hurricanes and
floods are going to become more common as the climate crisis worsens, making it more important than ever before
to produce accurate weather forecasts.
AI is proving increasingly helpful with that.In the past year, weather forecasting has been having an AI
moment.Three recent papers from Nvidia,Google DeepMind, and Huawei have introduced machine-learning
methods that are able to predict weather at least as accurately as conventional methods, and much more quickly.
Recently I wrote about Pangu-Weather,an AI model developed by Huawei.Pangu-Weather is able to forecast not
only weather but also the path of tropical cyclones(热带气旋).
Huawei's Pangu-Weather,Nvidia's FourcastNet,and Google DeepMind's GraphCast are making meteorologists
(reconsider how we use machine learning and weather forecasts,Peter Dueben, head of Earth system
modeling at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF),told me for the story.
ECMWF's forecasting model is considered the gold standard for medium-term weather forecasting (up to 15
days ahead).Pangu-Weather managed to get accuracy comparable to that of the ECMWF model, while Google
DeepMind claims to have beaten it 90%of the time in the combinations that were tested.
Although AI models can create forecasts in just seconds, they are unlikely to replace conventional weather
prediction models anytime soon.AI-powered forecasting models are trained on historical weather data that goes
back decades, which means they are great at predicting events that are similar to the weather of the past. That's a
problem in an era of increasingly unpredictable conditions.
We don't know if AI models will be able to predict rare and extreme weather events, says Dueben. He thinks
the way forward might be for AI tools to be adopted alongside traditional weather forecasting models to get the
most accurate predictions.
32.What does the UN secretary general's statement imply?
A.Climate change is worsening rapidly.
B.Weather forecasts are becoming easier.
C.Global warming is a natural phenomenon.
D.Extreme weather is already out of control.
33.What can be inferred from Peter Dueben's statement about the AI models?
A.They are too complex for experts to understand.B.They will replace human meteorologists soon.
C.They are less accurate than traditional methods.
D.They are causing a major shift in the field.
34.What does the gold standard status of ECMWF suggest?
A.Its model is slow but accurate.
B.Its forecasts are highly reliable.
C.It is easily beaten by AI models.
D.It focuses on short-term predictions.
35.Why might AI fail with rare and extreme weather?
A.It processes data too slowly.
B.Its training is still incomplete.
C.It relies on past weather patterns.
D.It cannot process real-time data.

4 Ways to Calm a Tense Situation
Dealing with arguments can be challenging. However, staying calm and self-aware is your greatest tool to find
common ground again.36 Remember, while working through disagreements is important, your safety comes
first. If you ever feel unsafe,it is always okay to set boundaries, ask for help,or walk away.
●Use“Opposite Energy"
When people start shouting and talking over each other,it's easy to copy that same angry energy, which only
makes things worse.37 Stay calm, control your emotions, and respond thoughtfully. When one person
remains reasonable, the argument usually cools down much faster.
Stick to the Main Point
Sometimes, one small problem can bring up every other past complaint.Try not to get distracted by these side
issues or hurtful comments.Keep the conversation focused on the most important problem at hand.38
Mind Your Words and Body Language
39 Speak softly and clearly.Avoid blaming phrases and defensive body language like pointing or crossing
your arms.Instead, use open-ended questions to let the other person express themselves.Use positive phrases like,
"Let's solve this together,"or"I see your point,"to show that you understand and want to find an answer.
Listen to the Feelings Behind the Words
When people are upset, their words don't always show their true feelings.40 Are they scared, stressed,or
hurt?Recognizing these hidden emotions can prevent you from focusing only on their sharp words.Even if you
disagree, everyone wants to feel heard.Maintain eye contact, nod to show you are listening, and repeat their
concerns in your own words to show you truly understand.
A.Instead,try to break the pattern.
B.Avoid focusing on their negative feelings.
C.The following tips may help you stay safe.
D.You can always deal with smaller issues later.
E.Try to understand why they are acting this way.
F.Try these techniques to promote more productive discussions.
G.Your communication style can make the situation better or worse.

The spring afternoon was warm when the doorbell rang.I was arranging red roses in a glass vase in the living
room.Through the clear door,I saw a thin,silver-haired woman standing quietly outside. The basket in her hands
held a dozen brown eggs, each one different in size.
When I opened the door, she gave a shy smile."These are from my backyard chickens.I thought you might
like some,"she said in a voice that was almost a whisper. Her simple blue dress looked old but was neatly ironed.
As she held out the basket,I noticed her thin fingers trembling slightly.
I noticed her eyes held a lonely look."What a lovely gift!Thank you, that's very kind.Would you like to come
in for some tea?"I asked. She nodded, her face brightening as she stepped inside.
The next morning, she returned just as the sun began to warm the garden. This time, her basket was filled with
freshly picked vegetables-green beans,red tomatoes,and yellow bell peppers.My six-year-old son Leo,who had
been watching for her from the window, rushed to open the door before I could.
"More wonderful things from your garden?"I asked, smiling at the beautiful vegetables. She explained that
since her husband passed away last year, her garden had become her greatest comfort. Her children lived in other
cities and rarely visited.
Leo returned from his room carrying his favorite picture book about plants."Can you show me which of these
vegetables are in your book?"she asked him gently. As they sat together at the kitchen table, turning the pages
slowly, morning sunlight streamed through the window, making their faces glow.Leo leaned comfortably against
her arm, completely absorbed in their shared discovery. Her voice, soft and clear, explained how each vegetable
grew, while Leo listened with wide, interested eyes.

第二节
When they finished looking at the book, she rose from her seat.I saw the lonely look returning to her eyes and
spoke without thinking,"Would you like to come read with Leo again tomorrow? We have more picture books
about nature."My words seemed to surprise us both. Her thin fingers, which had been nervously smoothing her
dress, stilled as she held the empty basket tightly.Leo added excitedly,"We can read about butterflies and flowers!"
Mrs.Green's face softened like snow melting in spring sunshine."I would be very happy to come,"she replied, her
voice warm and clear.
The next day,Leo waited by the window with two picture books. When Mrs.Green arrived, she brought a
small bunch of wildflowers and a happy smile. They sat together in the living room, turning pages slowly. The
morning light fell on their faces as they shared the story. In that quiet moment,I understood that the most precious
things in life are not what we grow in our gardens, but the friendships we build along the way.Though her family
lived far away, she had found new joy in sharing stories with a child who loved her company.

A篇
programme includes large musicals,.modern circus,,opera and family shows..”
篇即提到:“As Cardiff's longest-running comedy club.”。
The Gate Arts
Center"different programmes of independent films,live music,theatre and visual arts.";Cardiff
Arena则“holds big international music shows,.family shows,sports events and meetings..”。
根据第一段最后一句:“As a new sport,I saw the
potential in it as a golden opportunity for our school as we had never earned a place in traditional sports.
A项(专业

Overall, IT was wonderful, especially the mother character. SHE was so warm and wise, but I must say, the neighbor really bothered me. He was too curious about . others exactly. The mother was my favorite too, and the costumes were perfect. They really brought the story to life. At first I wasn't sure about the lighting, but IT grew on me. My only complaint was the ending. IT felt too sudden after such a long build up. So how did you like the play we just saw? Overall, IT was wonderful, especially the mother character. She's had some basic lessons, but needs to improve her technique. SHE would be perfect for our level three class. They began in the shallow pool where we focus on fundamental skills and gradually move to deeper water as they progress. I see. Could you tell me more about the class arrangement? We previously had fifteen students per class, but found that was too many. Now we maintain a maximum of six students, so each child receives focused individual guidance from the coach. What should we prepare for the lessons? Please bring an extra set of dry clothes. We'll provide all necessary swimming equipment. The regular class starts at ten o'clock, but on the first day, please arrive by nine forty five, so we can check lilly's current swimming level and assign her to the most suitable group. I want to share about my most meaningful term. It's hard to describe in a few words. So let me start from when my school asked me to join a teaching program in the countryside last spring. We got ready in february, but our group did not leave until early september, right after the summer break. While living in the village, I started working on my own studies. Professor Wilson, who teaches me sociology, and doctor lee, my education teacher, often send me books and homework. What I remember best are the things you cannot learn in a classroom, the look in a child's eyes when they understand a hard question, or the sound of students reading in the morning. Those months really opened my mind. Some people may wonder if this was a good idea to leave campus for a whole term, but I believe IT was very valuable. Becoming close with those students has changed how I see the world. Teaching is a special experience, and I hope some of you will try IT one day. Good morning class.
