Shan Hai Jing
Have you ever heard of the Zouwu, a mythical (神秘的) animal that can travel thousands of miles a day? It comes from the Shan Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas), an ancient Chinese text over 2,000 years old.
The book is far more than a collection of myths. It is a comprehensive record of the ancient Chinese world, written during the Warring States period (战国时期). The book is about 550 mountains and 300 waterways. Beyond that, it also includes knowledge of plants, animals, and medicine, showing how ancient people thought about their world.
The Shan Hai Jing is most famous for its imaginative mythical animals. For example, it describes the Candle Dragon, a red, footless dragon and the Queen Mother of the West, with a leopard’s tail and tiger’s teeth. These figures continue to inspire modern artists. For instance, artist Chen Siyu shows them with modern technology. The Zouwu even became a popular character in the movie Fantastic Beasts.
Its effects can be seen all over the world. In Japan, folklore (民间传说), such as tales of the nine-tailed fox, is related to the Shan Hai Jing. Experts also explore its possible links with other global myths. Today, its stories and animals appeared in cartoons, video games, and clothing designs.
In conclusion, the Shan Hai Jing is an important cultural bridge, connecting ancient geography and mythology with modern art and global culture, ensuring these ancient Chinese stories continue to attract the world.
