Last summer, high school cheerleader and sport star Aubrey Barnett noticed a continuous neck pain. By the start of her senior year in September 2024, the teen from Monroe, had been found having Burkitt lymphoma. “It’s one of the most serious cancers (癌症),” says Dr. John Bergsagel. “It can double in size every 24 hours.”
“I didn’t really believe it,” Aubrey said. “I was just living a normal life. There’s no way I have cancer. I’m fine. And then when they told me, I was like, ‘Are you all serious?’ Like, I didn’t really know what to feel.”
The good news is that there is a good chance of recovering well if given treatment (治疗) in time. Aubrey spent much of the fall season of her senior year in the hospital. For three months, Aubrey stood painful treatment, which caused mouth sores (溃疡). Her mother, Chancey Barnett, said she couldn’t open her mouth, making eating and talking difficult. Through it all, Aubrey’s spirit remained strong. After finishing treatment in December, she took part in a state cheer-leading competition and returned to the track team, where she broke her personal record.
Aubrey marked her high school graduation on May 20, 2025 at Walnut Grove High School. At the graduation, the President Allen said, “Aubrey graduated with straight A’s and is headed to Emmanuel University. Her victory over cancer while continuing to stand out in school is a great example of what willpower and hope can achieve. Her strength, courage, and uplifting spirit have moved our school community. We are proud of her.”
Her mother spoke about how Aubrey’s cancer journey deeply influenced their family and her daughter’s future. Now Aubrey plans to run track and study nursing or exercise science. Encouraged by the care she received, she’s also considering a job in nursing. “I started a GoFundMe to help buy gifts and care products for other patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. I want to work there when I get older. I think that I could help other kids get through their tough times.” Aubrey says.

Many people wonder when the best time to exercise is. Experts have different opinions about morning, evening and afternoon workouts (锻炼). To explore these differences further, let’s look at the benefits of exercising at different times of the day.
Dr. Jagim from Mayo Clinic Health System says, “Morning workouts make you feel like you do something good and start the day on a happy note.” After a morning workout, people feel good because of endorphins (内啡肽). Also, mornings are usually free from other things to do, allowing people to enjoy their afternoons and evenings without worrying about exercise. For morning workouts, Dr. Jagim says, “Eating a varied breakfast with carbohydrates (淀粉质食物), protein, and healthy fats is important. This gives energy for the workout.”
“However, for some people, waking up early to exercise is the last thing they feel like doing, and therefore, the case for evening workouts is more attractive. Your body works best in the early evening,” says Jake Erickson, a sports medicine expert. “This is a good time to exercise. During this time, your body has time to wake up a bit by moving around throughout the day. Also, your body uses oxygen better in the evening. This helps you use your energy more efficiently (高效地) when you exercise.”
A study with over 90,000 people found that exercising in the afternoon is better for your heart and helps you live longer than exercising in the morning or evening. This is especially true for older people. Dr. Gende at Mayo Clinic Health System says that morning workouts might not be good for people who work late shifts or stay up late. For them, it’s better to sleep more in the morning and then do a workout in the middle of the day or early afternoon before their next shift.
While science gives ideas, experts agree the best time matches personal plans and energy. Keeping exercising is more important than timing.
8. What does Dr. Jagim suggest for morning workouts?
A. Taking in more fats. B. Drinking enough water.
C. Having a healthy breakfast. D. Avoiding staying up late.
9. What might Jake Erickson agree with?
A. Evening workouts suit late risers better.
B. The later night exercisers wake up, the better.
C. Morning workouts benefit night workers a lot.
D. All people’s bodies work best in the late evening.
10. Which group benefits most from afternoon workouts according to paragraph 4?
A. Older people. B. Teenagers. C. Children. D. Young women.
11. Where is this passage most probably taken from?
A. A cook book. B. A health magazine. C. A sportsman’s diary. D. An education news.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. B

As wildfires spread across Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum showed its strong disaster readiness. With fire within six feet of the Getty Villa on January 7, the museum’s strong protective actions became a great example of resilience.
The Getty Museum’s workers, working 24-hour by turns, checked the hilltops around both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center. The older Getty Villa, home to thousands of old and valuable objects, is located in the Pacific Palisades, while the Getty Center in Brentwood houses famous artworks like Vincent van Gogh’s Irises. Provided with fire extinguishers (灭火器), the workers checked the grounds for fire, carefully protecting the museum’s valuable collections.
The museum’s survival against the fires was unusual among the extremely harmful damage that killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes. With $9.1 billion and years of experience in fighting wildfires, the Getty Museum had used millions in fire protection actions, like fire resistant (防火) architecture.
When the fire put the Getty Villa at risk, President Katherine Fleming watched anxiously from the Getty Center’s control station, tracking the fire’s progress. The Getty Villa, built with fire-resistant concrete (混凝土) walls and roofs, remained unharmed though the fire was very close. The same was true for its priceless collection of 40,000 valuable objects.
Meanwhile, the Getty Center’s architecture, designed by Richard Meier with fire-resistance in mind, has 1.2 million square feet of stone and huge open spaces to stop fire from spreading. The museum’s advanced watering system was started quickly, wetting the grounds and further protecting the treasures.
In the case of the Getty Museum, planning ahead protected its treasures. But in the future, as more disasters driven by the climate emergency must happen, the attention of normal people is important. We call for everyone to support efforts to make the city stronger.
12. Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “resilience” in paragraph 1?
A. Courage to fight. B. Plan to get away.
C. Strength to hold on. D. Willingness to help.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Sites of the Getty Museum. B. Valuable objects at the Getty Museum.
C. Daily responsibilities of museum workers. D. Fire protection efforts by museum workers.
14. Which of the following has little effect on the survival of the Getty Center?
A. The concrete floors. B. The large space.
C. The watering system. D. The use of stone materials.
15. What does the author mainly want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The increase of climate-driven disasters.
B. The public’s support for disaster protection.
C. The importance of planning ahead against wildfires.
D The Getty Museum’s success in treasure protection.
【答案】12 C 13. D 14. A 15. B

Experts have different opinions about morning evening and afternoon workouts (锻炼).

D. The Getty Museum’s success in treasure protection.
