Over the years,I bought countless pairs of shoes that brightened my mood, picked out dresses
that improved my figure and turned over my credit card for lots of make-up that I had hoped would
make me look fresher and happier. But all those things failed to bring relief to my pain inside.
But one afternoon in October 2015,I walked out of one store with something more valuable
than anything money could buy.I found hope in the unlikeliest place after months of hopelessness,
thanks to a woman who decided to start a conversation with me in the store's cafe.
It had been a painful time for me.Married a little over four years,I had suffered five
heartbreaking abortions and,at 42,was slowly accepting the cruel idea that I might never be able to
have a child.
On that special day,an elegantly dressed, slightly older woman seated beside me offered to
share the photos and stories of her daughter to break the silence in the half-empty cafe. Her Chinese
girl was about seven years old.
“She's pretty,.”I said.“But what made you decide to adopt her?”I asked,uncertain whether I
had stepped into an area which seemed too personal."I don't want work to be my whole life,"she
said.I wasn't sure whether she saw the tears welling up in my eyes as I replied,"I don't either, but
I'm afraid it's too late!""I was 51 when I adopted Melanie,"she said,"And it's the most rewarding
and exciting thing I've ever done."

Nobody likes waiting in long lines at amusement parks, especially when you are with babies.
Disney World is known for its splendid rides, attractions and large crowds as well. The familiar
result is that many guests have spent a lot of time just waiting in lines while visiting the theme parks,
which annoys the majority.
Until recently, both parks made use of the FastPass system to keep guests moving. On certain
rides,park-goers could obtain a ticket that allowed them to come back within a specific time
window. At that point, they would wait on a special line for seating. As explained in a recent
YouTube share, the system worked similarly to a real queue.Instead of waiting in line, guests could
continue to explore the park and, most importantly for Disney, spend more money at shops and
restaurants.
While the FastPass system became popular, usage ended during the recent pandemic. With
both the California and Florida theme parks operating at reduced visiting number, the space taken
up by FastPass kiosks was instead used for socially distanced lines.
In its place,Disney has developed a new planning tool called Disney Genie. The online app,
which became available in Disney World in October, allows guests to create a path for their visit.By
using park data that's updated throughout the day,the app will help guests plan out their visit so that
they can hit the rides and attractions that they want to in the most convenient way.Guests using the
app pay an extra fee and get the option to book the next available time to ride select attractions.
28.What may upset most visitors of Disney?
A.Long time in lines.
B.Poor equipment in theme parks.
C.Fewer attractions.
D.High prices at restaurants.
29.What did FastPass system bring about?

You've probably experienced this before:when returning from a round trip, the trip home felt
shorter. What is the scientific basis for this?
Some theories include the power of expectation.Especially for vacations, the anticipation of
finally reaching your destination can make the experience of traveling there feel longer because you
can't wait to get there.Additionally,if the trip to the location takes longer than expected,we may
readjust our expectations of the length of the trip so that the trip back feels shorter and thus more
pleasant.
Another theory is how humans take time to learn and become more familiar with new sights.
When faced with new stimuli or experiences,we feel as if time is getting slower to allow more brain
processing time. This contributes to why elder people often remark that time goes faster the more
they age because being older often means fewer new experiences,so there is less need for the brain
to interpret time more slowly to pay more attention to solving a problem.
In the case of the"return trip effect",after viewing the landmarks on the road while getting to
the destination,it is easier to recognize these points on the way back.Having less sense of puzzle
and being more certain of one's surroundings can make time feel faster. This is similar to how many
activities can feel natural after learning the process. For example, when you first learn to ride a bike,
you carefully strategize your speed and balance, but after a while of practicing, your mind is freer to
wander off.
This "return trip effect"is most notably noticed after reflecting on how long a trip to an
unfamiliar location took. This explains why the "return trip effect"is usually associated with
vacations and not daily commutes to work or school because by then, the sights are so familiar that
humans can more accurately measure the time spent going to and back from a location.
32.Why do elder people feel time flies?
A.They have fewer new stimuli to process.B.They have low expectations for the future
C.Their problem-solving ability decreases.D.Their brain tends to misinterpret()time
33.What does the example of learning to ride a bike in Paragraph 4 prove?
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Familiarity speeds up time.
C.The journey of life is full of uncertainties.D.Similar landmarks cause confusion with time.
34.Which trip may feel the longest?
A.The trip to school.
B.The trip to a strange place.
C.The trip home from school.
D.The trip home from a strange place.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.How can we make a long trip relatively short?
B.What is the scientific basis for time travel?
C.How long can the"return trip effect"last?
D.Why does the“return trip effect”occur?

The music is on.The figure skater glides,jumps and spins().One turn,two turns,three
turns.36
Why?People often feel dizzy and lose balance after spinning around.37
The eyes
reach their limit before our head finishes a full turn,so they turn back to a new starting point, said
Scientific American. When our eyes repeat this,we get dizzy.
Figure skaters don't have any super power.38 Their secret is lots and lots of practice,
according to Science Focus magazine. As they train more, their brains get used to the feeling.
39 One method is called"opposing eye movement".It's like the eye movement when
we watch a moving train pass in front of us while our heads stay still.Skaters can train themselves
to engage this eye movement when they spin.Scientific American said this can offset the dizzy
feeling.
40 We feel dizzier when our brain feels changes in speed.Skaters can also pick one
spot to stare at as they stop turning."Some skaters will design a dance move at the end of a long
spin."said Science Focus. This provides a little break while the dizziness passes.
A.No pain,no gain.
B.They get dizzy,too.
C.Their movements are so smooth and graceful.
D.Other methods include keeping a uniform speed.
E.Skaters also have methods to help them feel less dizzy.
F.It seems they never get dizzy no matter how many times they spin.
G.This is because when we move our head during a spin, our eyes start to move in the opposite
direction.

space and the money to care for him.I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog.I ran my fingers
over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title,Amos, the Beagle with a Plan.
Unknowingly,I had read the title.Without opening the book,I borrowed it from the library for the
summer.
Under the shade of a bush,I started to read about Amos.I read very, very slowly with difficulty.
Though pages were turned slowly,I got the main idea of the story about a dog who is like mine, had
been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog,
and I was the little boy in the book.At the end of the story,my mind continued to the final scene of
reunion,on and on,until my own lost dog and I were,in my mind, running together.

Boys and girls,
It's my great honor to give a speech about body language.
Body language plays an important role in people's daily interaction with others. Not
only can it help you make yourself more easily understood but it also makes you adjust to
new environment as soon as possible. How do we put body language to good use?First and
foremost, when communicating with others, you need t'o keep smile and maintain eye
contact. This will show others that you are a good listener and in turn they will listen to you.
What's more, while listening to others, you need to nod your head from time to time to
demonstrate that you're paying attention.Last but not least, you're encouraged to use
gestures to express your thoughts.
Hopefully, you can realize the importance of body language and the above-mentioned
tips will go a long way towards your interaction with others.Thank you.
第二节读后续写(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
My mother's call returned me to the real world.I suddenly realized something. The trick
of reading is to put yourself into the story experiencing what the author goes through and
appreciating its meaning in your heart. As long as I clung to this process, not only was my
inability to read defeated, but also an inner aspiration to read was stimulated, which changed
my life for the better.During the summer,I incredibly developed special companionship with
books, ranging from vivid storybooks to academic articles. My mother was more than
delighted to see my change.
Paragraph 2:
And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, and was
awarded a PhD in literature. She proposed that my experience should be of use to others. So I

In 2014,Amazon released the world's first voice-controlled"smart assistant",called the
Echo.It performed a variety of functions,including setting alarms,creating to-do lists,and
providing real-time information such as weather, traffic and other news. Two years later,
Google came out with the $180 Google Home.In 2017,the toy company Mattel came out
with Aristotle, their idea of a personal assistant, aimed at kids.If you are in the market for
one of these smart assistants, there are a number of things to consider. For instance,Google
Home can answer a wide variety of questions and has a music library of 35 million songs. It
also has many functions that work well with the TV,and is $50 cheaper than Amazon Echo.
Echo can all be operated just by voice command. It has a music library of 2 million songs.
Mattel's Aristotle can do most of what the other two can,but is meant to be more of a
personal companion to children. It can be used as a baby camera in your child's early years,
and still be useful until around middle school. It plays interactive games with them, reads to
them, and serves as an instructional resource as the children grow up.In summary, all three
have their benefits.
