Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Are you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard? Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something you’re your senses. Then messages are sent to different brain cells which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your short-term memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long-term memory.
Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long-term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don’t forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.
When you want to remember new information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses—sight, smell, hearing and touching and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual(视觉的) connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but its fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind yourself of something to remember.
16. At the beginning, the writer gives an example to ________.
A. lead in the topic of the article B. show the importance of chalk
C. let readers remember the word D. make readers know his favorite
17. How many ways are mentioned to have a good memory in Paragraph 2?
A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5
18. The main idea of the third paragraph is ________.
A. how to do well in exams B. how to remember new information
C. why to review your work D. what to eat to make memories stronger
19. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Memory has nothing to do with languages. B. Laughter can help to improve our memory.
C. A picture of eating chips is the most useful. D. Our brain is difficult to keep in good shape.
20. In order to remember new information, we should do the following EXCEPT________.
A. using our senses B. using our imagination to create visual connection
C. doing different to remind us D. getting plenty of sleep
C
Is there a way to quickly remember things just before an exam? Walking backward could be a good idea. Scientists say this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.
Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video in an experiment (实验). After watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 meters forward. The second group walked 10 meters backward. The third group stayed in one place. Then all three groups were asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video. The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers right on average than the other two groups.
This shows that the ideas of time and space are important for making memories. When you walk backward, you look at things from a different view. This difference helps people remember things that happened before more easily. When you walk backward, you need to look more carefully at the things around you to avoid (避免) accidents. By doing this, your senses are sharpened (使敏捷). As a result, you become more attuned to your environment.
And walking backward is not just good for our brains. It’s also good for the rest of our bodies. Compared with walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can help us improve our fitness because walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories (卡路里).
Walking backward is less stressful for our knees. It could be helpful for people whose knees often hurt. Walking backward also makes our spines (脊柱) stronger, which can help reduce pain in the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backward.
Next time when you want to improve your memory, why not give walking backward a try? It’s as simple as it sounds, but remember to watch where you’re going and who or what you may knock into.
21. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By giving his opinion. B. By asking a question.
C. By telling a story. D. By giving advice.
22. Why does the writer mention the experiment in Paragraph 2?
A. To show walking backward can help improve short-term memory.
B. To explain how memories are made in our brains while walking.
C. To point out walking backward can keep us healthy and happy.
D. To call on more people to volunteer in the walking group.
23. The words “become more attuned to” in Paragraph 3 are closest in meaning to ________.
A. become more afraid of B. understand better of
C. feel more lonely about D. get more interested in
24. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many young people like walking backward.
B. Walking backward is good for our brains and knees.
C. Walking backward use less energy than walking forward.
D. You can be completely relaxed when walking backward.
25. What’s the passage mainly about?

Meko and his team quickly started a new research project. Their goal was to find out how long previous droughts lasted. The team 40._________(collect) as many old wood samples as possible. They tested wood samples from 1,200 years ago until the present. When they examined the rings, the news about rainfall in the past was not good.
Meko’s research showed that the 20th century was 41.__________ unusually wet time. Trees from this period had wide, 42.__________(health) rings. Rain was plentiful during that century, millions of people moved to the region. Before that time, however, the rings showed that droughts occurred on a regular basis. They think it was because there was no longer enough water to farm. And Meko’s tree rings clearly show a serious drought at that time.
How long will the current drought last? Using nature’s code from the past, experts predict that this drought may continue for another 50 years.

D. You can be completely relaxed when walking backward.

Dear classmates,
Our memory plays an important role in our life. If we want to make progress in study, it is necessary to have a good memory. Here are some easy ways to improve it.
First, make a point of exercising your brain. Try new things like learning a new language or playing a new musical instrument—it exercises your brain and keeps your brain active. Second, if you live a healthy life, your memory will work better. Research shows that eating a balanced diet can improve your ability to remember things. What’s more, regular physical exercise and getting enough sleep also help improve your memory. Also, don't be too stressed, because stress makes memory less sharp. Last but not least, when you need to remember something, focus on it and repeat it. That helps a lot.
Let’s try these together! Thank you!
