Last summer, I decided to travel alone for the first time. I had always been curious, and the idea of 1 a new city by myself made me both excited and a little nervous. After a long journey, I 2 the hotel and finally felt ready.

While walking around, I met a friendly local who 6 some tips about the best places to visit. Talking with him made me feel more 7 about exploring the city on my own.
One afternoon, I 8 to explore a nearby hill. The path was narrow and sometimes a little 9 , but the view from the top was 10 . I even tried some local 12 in a small restaurant, and the taste was so different from what I usually ate at home. Before leaving, I wrote down the details (细节) of my 14 in a small notebook. This experience helped me improve my confidence and made me 15 my next adventure.

This autumn, I revisited Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) in Dunhuang, a place I had been to with my grandfather six years ago. At that time, he pointed at a 1 painting of flying apsaras (feitian) and said, “These 2 carry a thousand years of stories.” We took a photo in front of this painting. My grandfather died last year, so I wanted to find that same painting to 3 him.
There were many people in the grottoes and I felt 4 after searching for the painting for hours. Just as I was about to 5 , an old researcher noticed that I was unhappy and came up to help me. When I showed him the old 6 , he smiled and said, “That’s Painting 257. Come with me.” He led me to the painting, 7 how workers kept the colors nice for hundreds of years.
Standing in front of the 8 flying apsaras, my eyes filled with 9 . I almost heard my grandfather’s voice again. The researcher patted (拍) my shoulder 10 and said, “Memories like this keep history 11 .”
This trip taught me that 12 is not just about visiting places again — it’s about 13 with the past and understanding our history. I also learned that every small thing we do to 14 stories — like taking photos or writing down words — can make love and culture 15 forever.

As a traveler with a disability, I have always avoided cruises (乘船旅行). This expedition-style small-ship cruise changed my mind.
When our expedition leader 1 we would make a Zodiac (卓迪船) 2 at Jan Mayen, a tiny island in the Arctic Ocean, I stepped out onto my balcony aboard our ship, 3 to find clear skies and calm seas. 4 , I was met with a gust of wet wind and a view of mist-covered mountains in the distance. Jan Mayen wasn’t on our schedule, and due to its 5 location and often unpredictable weather, very few people ever 6 the island. I knew the 7 weren’t ideal, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me.
In fact, the possibility of 8 adventures was one of the reasons I chose this small-ship cruise. So I 9 joined my shipmates in the waiting room, where we put on waterproof clothes and life jackets before hopping in the Zodiacs for a bumpy 10 to a black-sand beach. Even the fierce wind and rain couldn’t 11 our excitement as we 12 our way to the beach and hiked to a viewpoint, pausing to photograph little purple flowers 13 the volcanic rocks.
Our visit there wasn’t about what we could do or see. It was an opportunity to just be — to exist in a brief 14 on a tiny, often inaccessible, volcanic rock in the Arctic. And that’s something I never thought I’d 15 in my lifetime.

A gentle voice filled the cabin as the train’s loudspeaker crackled to life. “Passengers who are seeing off friends and family, please 1 the train. We assure you they will arrive safe and sound.” The 2 was made in Chinese, English, and Tibetan, providing 3 to me and the other passengers on the train from Xining to Lhasa.
I had felt a bit 4 and struggled to overcome the shortness of breath I experienced in Golmud, which sits at about 2,800 meters. While the train is 5 for its oxygen supply system, I couldn’t 6 my worry. It was when I saw the reassuring smile of Mu Juan, our onboard broadcaster, that my 7 began to calm.
“Each of our attendants knows clearly the physical condition of the 8 passengers in his or her carriage, and we have two doctors ready for any emergency.” she said. “If the passenger can’t continue the trip, he or she will be sent to the nearest stop with 9 to a county hospital.”
Each carriage displayed information about the speed, altitude, outside temperature, and upcoming stops on the screen. Showing such information was one of the many 10 that Mu took care of. Tea is not part of my daily life. But that’s fine. There’s no rule that says you have to be a “tea expert” in order to have a(n) 1 when tasting it. Mount Wuyi is famous for its rock tea. I was told that, as the tea trees grow in the cracks (裂缝) of the rocks on the 2 , the minerals in the rocks provide the tea with a 3 flavor. I could 4 a metallic (金属腥味的) flavor on the back of my 5 after the initial taste of fresh tea. It reminded me of the time when I licked a battery as a kid. Wuyishan National Park is as 10 and unique as the tea. Boatmen will 11 you legends of the rock formations as you drift down Nine-Bend River on a bamboo raft. Of course, there’s a heartbreaking tale of love.
I was fortune enough to 12 the core area of the park, off limits for tourists and 13 for research. Atop a weather tower, there was nothing but an expanse of 14 green mountains and a cool breeze.
