Mike Pavlik sees a lot while recovering stolen bikes around Minneapolis. Once, pretending to be a potential buyer, he dressed up in a sport coat and met a seller. Pavlik took note of the bike’s make, model and marking, confirming it was the one he was hunting. He asked to take it for a test ride. The seller wanted some collateral (抵押物).
“Do I look like the kind of guy that steals bikes?” Pavlik recalls asking the man. Then he just pedaled off. An hour later, the seller texted him, “I guess you're not coming back?”
Pavlik is part of an unusual army: amateur detectives who find stolen bikes and return them to their owners. As bike theft becomes more profitable, grassroots efforts to crack down on thieves are springing up nationwide. The volunteers say recovering bikes can be strangely fun and addictive.
Pavlik, who is 51, works for Twin Cities Stolen Bikes, which has a Facebook page with 11,000 members. The volunteer group reunites owners with their wheels, often by tracking stolen bikes for sale on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUP, Craiglist or eBay, and then facing suspected thieves.
Pavlik likes helping victims almost as much as punishing thieves. For Pavlik, recovering someone’s bikes is a big deal. “It’s how they get to work, and lack of transportation leads to losing a job,” he says. “So it’s helping those folks where it really matters.”
Bike theft is big business. Close to 2 million bikes are stolen each year in North America, costing cyclists nearly $1 billion, compared with $500 million 10 years ago.
“It’s been bananas lately.” says Bryan Hance, who helps run Bike Index, where cyclists can register their bikes online for free and report them stolen. More than 16,000 stolen bikes were reported last year versus 11,000 in 2019. Hance says the thefts aren’t top priority for police, creating space for volunteers. Police say they take bike theft seriously, though manpower to tackle it is a challenge.
4. What did Pavlik do according to the first two paragraphs?
A. He played a joke on the thief. B. He bought a bike from the thief.
C. He helped the thief in a friendly way. D. He recovered a stolen bike strategically.
5. What can we infer about Mike Pavlik?
A. He has a sense of justice. B. He likes making fun of others.
C. He is a professional detective. D. He is humorous and outgoing.
6. What does the author try to stress in paragraph 5?
A. The role of transportation. B. The significance of Pavlik’s work.
C. The importance of having a job. D. The consequence of stealing bikes.
7. What does the underlined part in paragraph 7 mean?
A. Things have been crazy. B. The situation has improved.
C. Great changes have taken place. D. New policies have been adopted.
C
Superhighways of vessels (血管) beneath our skin transport blood and nutrients. These natural pathways expand like tree branches to help our body move food and oxygen to our organs. While our bodies naturally produce vessels, bioengineers are now crafting them in labs, using an unexpected material: ice.
The idea was inspired by the ice magic in the Disney movie Frozen, says Burak Ozdoganlar, a mechanical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University, “Frozen’s ice queen commands ice and snow — maybe we can too.” To make the vessels, the engineer first needed a template (模板) to build the tissue. “Originally, we were trying to do this with wax (蜡),” Ozdoganlar says. “But wax proved too soft. And it’s not necessarily biocompatible, or suitable for use in the body.” Then they thought of Elsa’s magic. Ice seemed like a good alternative for many reasons. It costs little and is readily available. And most importantly, since it’s nonpoisonous, the body won’t reject it.
Printing the ice template is simple. Engineers program the desired shape into a 3-D printer, which then drops water onto a -35℃ surface to freeze it instantly. This process is repeated until the vessel’s shape is complete. Overall, it takes less than 30 seconds. Then the template is wrapped in gelatin, which becomes solid under ultraviolet light as the ice melts, leaving behind realistic-looking blood channels.
The team has tested the channels with lining cells of blood vessels. Those cells survived for two weeks, a promising sign for future transplantation into humans. The new vessels might be tested with a drug being developed for use in people. Such tests could show how your body might react to the drug. “This is really a game-changer,” says Ozdoganlar.
“The new research is quite interesting and exciting,” says Warren Grayson, a biomedical engineer at Johns Hopkins University. “But it also has limitations. You can see that all these structures are pretty small. Their size is limited by the need for extreme cold. Larger structures would not stay cold enough due to heat transfer. This method may not transform the tissue engineering field, but it does provide another perspective for creating structures.”
8. What key advantage does ice offer over wax for the engineers’ project?
A It’s cost-effective. B. It’s harmless to our body.
C. It’s easy to obtain. D. It’s environmentally friendly.
9. What happens to the ice template during the process of vessel making?
A. It solidifies the encasing gelatin. B. It is reshaped after its completion.
C It becomes a part of the final vessel. D. It melts away with the channels remaining.
10. What does Warren Grayson think of the ice-vessel approach?
A. It marks a dramatic change. B. It provides a new outlook.
C. It serves as a practical solution. D. It represents a notable innovation.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. From Frozen to Functional: Crafting Vessels from Ice
B. Vessel Building: Challenges and Advances in Materials
C. 3-D Printing: A Game Changer for Biological Engineering
D. Bringing Frozen to Life: Impacting Blood Flow with Ice
D
Like many you might have puzzled over contemporary art, such as a giant folk sculpture. In her book Get the Picture, journalist Bianca Bosker addresses the age-old question “What is art?” She goes to great lengths to find the answer, offering a participatory journey into the art world and revealing its spiritual rewards.
Bosker sets out to develop what art students call an “Eye”, the ability to separate the “good” art from the “bad”. To do this, she dives deep into the art community, working as a gallery assistant, art-fair seller, studio helper and museum security guard to examine art from different angles. She discovers that the art world often excludes those who can’t afford to go to art school or create passion projects. Practitioners (专业人员) often take on multiple jobs to make ends meet; many eventually quit from burnout. Yet, she also reveals the fundamental joy that art can bring to both creators and viewers.
Bosker’s exploration continues with neuroaesthetics (神经美学), the application of neuroscience to study the perception of art. Researchers have demonstrated that seeing is often secondary to believing—a “filter of expectation” in our brain twists the raw data stream of light that hits our eyes. This filter allows us to ignore certain visual details to rapidly process our disorderly environment. This is why we know a white vase next to the window is still white, even as natural light transforms its exact color to sunset golden or moonlight gray throughout the day.
One function of art, Bosker writes, is to remove this filter to re-examine the world with renewed wonder. Art has a therapeutic (治疗的) quality, a fact that’s seized upon by doctors who recommend patients visit art museums. Removing that filter can also help doctors themselves. Studies have shown that medical trainees who take an art-based course perform more integrative physical examinations and read human facial expressions better than those who don’t.
In the end, readers don’t get a complete answer to humankind’s strong desire for art. Bosker instead offers her own interpretation: Art is a way to find beauty and heighten our appreciation for life. In exposing the blind faith in the “Eye”, Bosker argues that art is everywhere and can be anything, as long as we’re open to letting what we see move us. By the last page, you’ll be forced to revisit that folk sculpture and see the artwork with fresh eyes.
12. How did Bosker gain her understanding of art?
A. By pursuing a career in art. B. By fitting into the art circles.
C. By registering for art classes. D. By learning from practitioners.
13. What can be inferred about the “filter of expectation” in our brains?
A. It enables us to see clearly in chaos. B. It shapes the idea of what beauty is.
C. It leads to a subjective view on things. D. It makes us more sensitive to colors.
14. What is a basis for art’s therapeutic quality?
A. Art enriches people’s spiritual world. B. Art can bring changes in viewpoints.
C. Art has proved to be an effective cure. D. Art has been widely adopted by doctors.
15. What is Bosker’s attitude towards the faith in “Eye”?
A Challenging B. Approving C. Dismissive D. Objective

For many of us, the days are filled with a million small interruptions. And this is true even on our days off. Maybe you’ve taken a call at the beach, texted your boss from the grocery store or emailed a co-worker while on a picnic with your family. ____16____ But there is a real cost to these interruptions, and there are smart strategies we can all take to better protect our time.
In one study, researchers recruited (召集) parents who were visiting a science museum with their kids. Some parents were told to check their phones as much as possible; others were told to check their phones as little as possible. After the visit, parents who used their phones reported that the experience was significantly less meaningful. ____17____
____18____ Companies lose 32 days of productivity each year to employee depression, which is often caused by the stress and burnout of our always-on culture. Despite knowing better, I, too, have found myself focusing on "urgent work" over important life moments.
Now is our opportunity to create a new culture that respects time. And the way to make this change is through small steps that we can take right now. ____19____ When we do have time off, we need to find ways in which we can enjoy the present moment, as opposed to seeing it as an unproductive barrier to our work. Another strategy is to negotiate for more time on adjustable deadlines to prevent work from affecting your personal life. And don’t worry too much about the reputation. ____20____
Once you discover the impact that these changes can have, you’ll feel empowered to demand that others respect and accommodate your approach to time. Maybe they’ll even feel inspired to piece together the broken moments of their lives, too.
A. They also felt much lonelier.
B. You need to prioritize urgent work.
C. One specific strategy is to redefine rest.
D. There’s difficulty in corporate management.
E. Quality truly is the measure that matters most.
F. We’ve convinced ourselves that these behaviors are no big deal.
G. These constant interruptions come at a cost to organizations, too.

The last lesson of the day was PE class. Emma was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several classmates. She was quite good at it. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped swiftly. When time was up, the counter showed 220 skips. Feeling proud, Emma flashed a victory smile to the crowd. Just then, the bell rang — class was over. It was time to give her answer to Ms. Wilson.
That morning, Ms. Wilson had asked her if she would like to take on the task of the class bulletin board (板报) for the upcoming competition. It was Lily who usually handled it, but she had taken sick leave, and someone else needed to step in. It never occurred to Emma that Ms. Wilson would think of her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was terrible. But Ms. Wilson reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and that they would talk about it again after school.
Now, walking towards the teachers' office, Emma felt anxious. The thought of her poor handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to comment on made her stomach turn. No. Never would she let that happen. She quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Emma was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑) when someone caught her attention. It was Tim from class 5. She thought that Tim had never been good at long jump, but he just kept practicing it on and on. Out of curiosity, she went over to ask what he was doing. Tim explained that no one else in his class had signed up for the long-jump event, and without a participant, their class wouldn’t get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Emma reminded him that he wasn’t good at it, but Tim simply said that he knew that — and that it wasn’t about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for his class. Then he went back to practicing. What a similar dilemma they were both in!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Standing there, Emma watched Tim practicing hard with great patience.

D 5. A 6. B 7. A

根据第一段中“Once, pretending to be a potential buyer, he dressed up in a sport coat and met a seller. Pavlik took note of the bike’s make, model and marking, confirming it was the one he was hunting. He asked to take it for a test ride. The seller wanted some collateral (抵押物).(有一次,他伪装成潜在买家,穿上一件运动外套去见卖家。帕夫利克记下了这辆自行车的品牌、型号和标识,确认这就是他要找的那辆。他提出要试骑一下。卖家要求他提供一些抵押物)”以及第二段““Do I look like the kind of guy that steals bikes?” Pavlik recalls asking the man. Then he just pedaled off. An hour later, the seller texted him, “I guess you're not coming back?”(“我看起来像是那种会偷自行车的人吗?”帕夫利克回忆起自己当时这样问那个人。随后,他径直骑车离开了。一个小时后,卖家发短信给他:“我猜你是不会回来了吧?”)”可知,帕夫利克假装成潜在买家,与卖家见面,确认自行车是失窃的那辆后,以试骑为由,没有给抵押物就骑走了,最后把自行车归还给了失主,即他策略性地找回了一辆被盗的自行车。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Pavlik, who is 51, works for Twin Cities Stolen Bikes, which has a Facebook page with 11,000 members. The volunteer group reunites owners with their wheels, often by tracking stolen bikes for sale on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUP, Craiglist or eBay, and then facing suspected thieves.(现年51岁的帕夫利克在“双城失窃自行车”组织工作,该组织在脸书上有一个拥有1.1万名成员的页面。这个志愿者团体经常通过追踪在Facebook Marketplace、OfferUP、Craiglist或eBay等平台上出售的被盗自行车,与疑似盗贼交涉,从而让失主找回他们的自行车)”以及第五段“Pavlik likes helping victims almost as much as punishing thieves. For Pavlik, recovering someone’s bikes is a big deal. “It’s how they get to work, and lack of transportation leads to losing a job,” he says. “So it’s helping those folks where it really matters.”(帕夫利克喜欢帮助受害者,其程度几乎不亚于惩治盗贼。对帕夫利克而言,帮人找回自行车是件大事。他说:“自行车是他们上班的交通工具,缺乏交通工具会导致失业。”“所以,这是在真正要紧的时候帮了那些人的大忙。”)”可知,帕夫利克是一名志愿者,他帮助失主找回被盗的自行车,认为找回自行车对失主来说很重要,因为自行车是他们上班的交通工具,由此可推断出他很有正义感。故选A。
根据第五段“For Pavlik, recovering someone’s bikes is a big deal. “It’s how they get to work, and lack of transportation leads to losing a job,” he says. “So it’s helping those folks where it really matters.”(对帕夫利克而言,帮人找回自行车是件大事。他说:“自行车是他们上班的交通工具,缺乏交通工具会导致失业。”“所以,这是在真正要紧的时候帮了那些人的大忙。”)”可知,对于帕夫利克来说,找回某人的自行车是一件大事,因为自行车是他们上班的交通工具,缺乏交通工具会导致失业,所以这是真正帮助到那些需要帮助的人,作者在此段强调了Pavlik工作的意义。故选B。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第六段“Bike theft is big business. Close to 2 million bikes are stolen each year in North America, costing cyclists nearly $1 billion, compared with $500 million 10 years ago.(自行车盗窃是一笔大生意。 故选A。
Those cells survived for two weeks a promising sign for future transplantation into humans.
A. It’s cost-effective. B. It’s harmless to our body.
C. It’s easy to obtain. D. It’s environmentally friendly.
9. What happens to the ice template during the process of vessel making?
A. It solidifies the encasing gelatin. B. It is reshaped after its completion.
C. It becomes a part of the final vessel.
B 9. D 10. B 11. A

D
Like many, you might have puzzled over contemporary art, such as a giant folk sculpture.
A. Challenging B.

故填which。

Standing there Emma watched Tim practicing patiently and hard. When she saw Tim start and jump again and again, and get up immediately even if he fell, Emma felt a touch in her heart, and the thought of refusing began to waver. Tim was not good at long jump, but he was willing to try for his class. Even though her handwriting was poor, why couldn’t she try to overcome it? She realized that Ms. Wilson’s trust was an opportunity, and she shouldn’t back down because of a little flaw. She decided to change her mind and accept the task of the bulletin board.
Emma walked into the teachers’ office with a determined look on her face. Seeing Ms. Wilson, Emma took a deep breath and said firmly, “Ms. Wilson, I’ve thought it through. I’m willing to take charge of the class bulletin board!” Ms. Wilson showed a relieved smile. Emma then explained that it was Tim practicing long jump for his class that made her understand that what matters is trying, not being perfect. She also took the initiative to say that she would spend more time practicing writing to ensure that the bulletin board was well done and live up to the teacher’s trust. Ms. Wilson praised her growth repeatedly.
