Li Shizhen (1518—1593) was a famous Chinese doctor from Qizhou, Hubei Province. Born into a medical family, he gave up studying for exams and learned medicine from his father. Later, he became a skilled doctor, even treating royal (王室的) family members.

When he read old medical books, he noticed many errors in them, so he decided to write a new one. Later, Li spent 27 years writing the Compendium of Materia Medica (《本草纲目》). In order to finish his book, he travelled widely, checked plants and talked to farmers. The book lists 1,892 medicines, with 1,109 illustrations (插图). For ginseng, it describes as follows: Grown in deep mountains, its root looks like a human body. It has a sweet taste and grows slowly, taking years to be fully grown and developed.
