Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that the happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was not able to make her feel happy, I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were there. We got to the church early. Then soon some of her friends came and they went over to greet her and sit with her.

Travelling abroad costs a lot, not only money but also time and energy. But the personal benefits of travelling to a foreign country are beyond imagination. Escaping the familiar home and stepping out of your usual routine fosters mental and physical well-being.
First, travelling sharpens your mind. A new environment forces you to accept a brand-new life where you’ll be required to explore unfamiliar places, read foreign languages, try new things, make quick decisions, and choose your new eating and sleeping schedule. All these will require mental processing. Once you return home, you’ll be sharper than ever.
In addition, travelling can give you chances to exercise. Compared with going sweat in the gym, exploring new cities on foot, hiking, and walking between places can offer much more various and enjoyable ways to exercise. That means you’ll be much more active from day to day while on the road, regardless of whether your trip is an adventurous one or simply a relaxing beach trip.
Nobody comes back from a journey the way they started it. For example, returning from Pakistan, a country in south Asia where people struggle to survive for lack of food or suffer from infectious diseases, you may feel more blessed and content. That’s another change travelling will bring to you: a shift in perspective.
Therefore, the long-lasting personal benefits of visiting a foreign country far outweigh the costs and time.
8. Which of the following is Not True according to the passage?
A. Travelling abroad costs energy, money and time.
B. You’ll be much more active when you are travelling.
C. Nobody comes back from a journey without a change.
D. Exploring new places on foot offers fewer ways to exercise.
9. According to the passage, what will happen if one travels to new places?
A. He will accept the new environment easily.
B. He is likely to struggle with money and time.
C. He will have to organize different daily routines.
D. He may find road trips more relaxing than beach trips.
10. Why is Pakistan mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To show travelling brings health problems.
B. To show travelling allows you to meet new people.
C. To show travelling can change a person’s thoughts on life.
D. To show travelling gives you a chance to read foreign languages.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Traveling abroad makes people smarter.
B. Travelling abroad is beneficial for both mind and body.
C. The advantages and disadvantages of travelling abroad.
D. The tips to save costs and time on visiting a foreign country.

I want to share with you a story from 28 years ago. My dad was a used car salesman. Every Thursday night, he would head off to Shreveport, LA for an auction (拍卖会). Most of the time, I drove a car over there for him so he could sell it at the auction.
One day I was riding with my dad when he noticed a hitch-hiker (搭便车的人) with a backpack. Without hesitation, he pulled the car over and offered him a ride. Dad asked him his name, and proceeded to talk to him about all sorts of things. Dad asked him where he was going. The hitch-hiker told him that he was heading for the west. I can’t recall why but he told Dad a lot of things that had occurred to him and that persuaded him to make that decision. He talked about the tragic events that occurred to him several years before. He was in low spirits, but I could see that the hitch-hiker’s attitude was changing as someone was really listening to him.
We drove 45 minutes before the hitch-hiker got off. We pulled over and Dad told him to keep his head up and things would start looking up for him soon. He reached into his pocket and handed the hitch- hiker a twenty-dollar bill. The guy smiled. He nearly lit up right there on the cold, dark highway.
We drove on and my dad did not say a single thing. I was still completely surprised by what I had just witnessed. I was always told by everyone never to pick up a hitch-hiker and yet my dad did it every single time he saw one. While reflecting upon that story I came to understand that just one single kind act could change someone’s life. And I am sure that my father’s deed made that poor man’s day.
12. What made the hitch-hiker become less upset?
A. The writer’s father talking to him about all sorts of things.
B. The writer’s father offering him a free ride.
C. The writer’s father really listening to him.
D. The writer’s father agreeing to drive him to his destination.
13. When his father helped the hitch-hiker, the writer ___________.
A. was deeply moved B. strongly disagreed
C. admired his father D. couldn’t understand
14. Which of the following words can be used to describe the father?
A. Wealthy. B. Warm-hearted.
C. Far-sighted. D. Adventurous.
15. What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing this text?
A. To tell a story of his father.
B. To show his respect for his father.
C. To prove his father is the best teacher.
D. To advise people to learn from the hitch-hiker.

How to Be an Effective Member of a Team
Working in a team can be rewarding, but at times it can be difficult. To create a successful team, effective communication methods are necessary. Here we’ve outlined some ways to avoid some common team mistakes as well as some helpful advice.
Communicate
___16___ Letting bad feelings brew(酝酿)will only make you feel bad and want to isolate yourself from the group. Not only does it feel good to get the bad feelings out, but it will be better for the team in the long run.
___17___
People in your group will lose respect for you if you’re constantly blaming others for not meeting deadlines. Group members understand if you have a heavy workload and aren’t able to meet a deadline. Saying something like, “I’m really sorry, but I’ll get it to you by the end of today.” will earn you a lot more respect than trying to make it seem like it’s everyone else’s fault that you missed your deadline.
Support group member’s ideas
If a teammate suggests something, always consider it! ___18___ And this makes you a good team member. After all, nobody likes a know-it-all.
Listen Actively
Look at the person who’s speaking to you, nod, ask questions and acknowledge what’s said by paraphrasing points that have been made. If you’re unclear about something that’s been said, ask for more information to clear up any confusion before moving on. Effective communication is a vital part of any team. ___19___.
Get Involved
Share suggestions, ideas, solutions and proposals with your team members. Take the time to help your fellow teammates. You can guarantee there will be a time in the future when you’ll need some help or advice. ___20___.
A. Don’t Blame Others
B. Avoid showing off
C. Thus, the value of good listening skills shouldn’t be ignored.
D. Have faith that people will recognize when good work is being done.
E. If you have a problem with someone in your group, talk to him about it
F. And if you’ve helped them in the past, they’ll be more than happy to lend a helping hand.

Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B

A The writer’s father talking to him about all sorts of things.
B. The writer’s father offering him a free ride.
C. The writer’s father really listening to him.
D. The writer’s father agreeing to drive him to his destination.

G. Considering the group’s ideas shows you’re interested in other people’s ideas, not just your own.
【答案】16. E 17. A 18. G 19. C 20. F
【解析】

【17题详解】
本空属于标题类。根据本段第一句People in your group will lose respect for you if you’re constantly blaming others for not meeting deadlines.可知如果你老是责怪他人那么你的团队会失去对你的尊重,所以不要责怪别人,且句中有关键词blaming others,由此可知选A。
【18题详解】
根据本段的标题Support group member’s ideas可知要支持组员的想法,再结合第一句If a teammate suggests something, always consider it!

故填it。
【44题详解】
考查动词时态和主谓一致。句意:游客带来的问题数不胜数:一大群人走路时不考虑其他人的需要,过马路时不考虑当地的交通法规,等等。分析句子可知,此处为The number of…表示“……的数量”作主语时,谓语动词用单数形式,结合该句为陈述客观事实,所以为一般现在时。故填is。
【45题详解】
考查动词不定式。句意:解决这个问题的唯一方法就是确保你不是一个可怕的游客!由空前way可知,此处为动词不定式to do作后置定语修饰way,way to do“做某事的方式”为惯用表达。故填to solve。

注意:1.续写词数应150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

It turned out to be a great day for us.

【答案】With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then, my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she’s the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can’t wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!
