When Wang Aimin, then a professor of oceanic science at Hainan University, started helping with marine ranching (牧场经营) by dropping artificial reefs (礁) into seawater in 2011, he was laughed at.
Now, more than a decade later, Wang’s efforts have paid off. By placing artificial reefs and transplanting corals underwater, he and his team helped restore (修复) the marine ecology in the waters of Wuzhizhou Island, a tourist destination in Sanya, south China’s Hainan Province.
Currently, hundreds of marine species thrive (茁壮成长) in the marine ranch near the island. It is China’s first tropical marine ranch.
“There were many different varieties of fish here in the early days,” said Ding Feng, who works with the tourist site. “Since the spot opened to the public in 2000, we have had countless visitors.”
However, long-term overfishing degraded the eco-environment there, and the fish population decreased considerably in the following years.
“We were looking for ways to help restore the marine environment, and around 2010, the agricultural authorities suggested the idea of marine ranching,” Ding said, adding that the tourist attraction started to invite experts and gather investment to launch the marine ranching project thereafter.
But building a ranch beneath the water surface appeared to be difficult. “I had limited knowledge about marine ranching at the very beginning,” Wang said.
After preparations, Wang led his team and started the project in 2011. Thanks to years of efforts, the fish population in the waters near Wuzhizhou Island has increased by up to 10 times compared with 2011, and more than 120 corals are thriving in the area.
“Marine ranching certainly helped restore the biodiversity,” said Chen Jingyuan, a local official.
Now Wang Aimin retired, but he planned to continue his marine ranching efforts.
“I hope that the experience we have gained here in Wuzhizhou Island will set a good example for similar projects in the rest of the country,” Wang said.
4. What is the purpose of the marine ranching project?
A. To develop the tourist attraction. B. To train local divers.
C. To help fishermen catch more fish. D. To help restore the marine environment.
5. How did the marine ranching project affect Wuzhizhou Island?
A. The project made it open to the public.
B. The project helped it restore the biodiversity.
C. The project damaged the eco-environment there.
D The project made the fish population reduce there.
6. What does the underlined word “degraded” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Worsened. B. Promoted. C. protected. D. Improved.
7. What can we learn about the marine ranching project from the last two paragraphs?
A It has made Wang Aimin promoted.
B. It can create great economic value.
C. It can serve as a model for other similar projects.
D. It has become the best marine ranching project in the world.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C

What would you do to earn money if all you had was five dollars and two hours? This is the assignment (任务) I gave students in my very first course at the Stanford School.
What would you do if you were given this challenge? When I asked this question to most groups, someone usually shouted out “Go to Las Vegas” or “Buy a lottery ticket”. This got a big laugh. These folks would take a significant risk in return for a small chance of earning a big reward. The next most common suggestion was to set up a car wash or lemonade stand, using the five dollars to purchase starting materials. This was a fine option for anyone interested in earning a few extra dollars of spending money in two hours. But most of the students eventually found a way to move far beyond the standard responses. They took seriously the challenge to question traditional assumptions, exposing a wealth of possibilities, in order to create as much value as possible.
How did they do this? Here’s a clue: The teams that made the most money didn’t use the five dollars at all. They realized that focusing on the money actually framed the problem too tightly. They understood that five dollars is nearly nothing and decided to reinterpret (重新解读) the problem more broadly: What can you do to make money if you start with nothing?
I count the Five-Dollar Challenge as a success in teaching students about thinking like an entrepreneur (企业家). In fact, they tapped into their talents and unlocked their creativity to identify problems — problems that they experienced or noticed others experiencing, or that they might have seen before but had never thought to solve. By discovering these problems and then working to solve them, the winning team brought in more than six hundred dollars, and the average rate of return on the five-dollar investment was 4 000 percent! If you take into account that many of the teams didn’t use the funds at all, then their financial returns were infinite (极大的).
8. What can we infer about the students who put forward the second most common suggestion?
A. They are creative. B. They are practical.
C. They like taking chances. D. They like trying new things.
9. What’s the author’s suggestion about his assignment?
A. Ignoring the money. B. Getting some support.
C. Raising more money. D. Asking for some advice.
10. How much did the students make with the five-dollar investment on average?
A. 100 dollars. B. 200 dollars. C. 400 dollars. D. 600 dollars.
11. What’s the purpose of the author assignment for his students?
A. To turn them into entrepreneurs. B. To help them make more money.
C. To encourage them to think creatively. D. To create some opportunities for them.
B 9. A 10. B 11. C

根据第二段“The next most common suggestion was to set up a car wash or lemonade stand, using the five dollars to purchase starting materials. This was a fine option for anyone interested in earning a few extra dollars of spending money in two hours. (第二个最常见的建议是开洗车店或柠檬水摊,用这5美元购买启动材料。对于那些想在两小时内多赚点零花钱的人来说,这是个不错的选择。)”可知,提出这个建议的学生选择了利用现有资金、步骤明确且能快速获利的方式,体现了务实的特质。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The teams that made the most money didn’t use the five dollars at all. They realized that focusing on the money actually framed the problem too tightly. They understood that five dollars is nearly nothing and decided to reinterpret (重新解读) the problem more broadly: What can you do to make money if you start with nothing? (赚得最多的团队根本没动用那5美元。他们意识到,过分关注这笔钱实际上会把问题框得太死。他们明白5美元几乎毫无价值,于是决定更宽泛地重新解读问题:如果一无所有,你能做些什么来赚钱?)”可知,作者通过成功案例暗示,完成任务的关键是忽略这5美元,跳出资金限制思考。故选A项。
根据第四段“By discovering these problems and then working to solve them, the winning team brought in more than six hundred dollars, and the average rate of return on the five-dollar investment was 4 000 percent! (通过发现这些问题并着力解决,获胜团队赚得超过600美元,而这5美元投资的平均回报率竟高达4000%!)”可知,平均收益计算为:5美元 ×4000% = 200美元。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“I count the Five-Dollar Challenge as a success in teaching students about thinking like an entrepreneur (企业家). In fact, they tapped into their talents and unlocked their creativity to identify problems-problems that they experienced or noticed others experiencing, or that they might have seen before but had never thought to solve. (我认为“5 美元挑战”成功教会了学生像企业家一样思考。事实上,他们充分发挥自身才能、激发创造力,从而发现了各类问题 —— 这些问题要么是他们自己经历过的、注意到他人正在遭遇的,要么是他们以前可能见过但从未想过要去解决的。)”可知,作者布置该任务的目的是鼓励学生创造性思考。故选C项。

About 20 years ago, some 15,000 red pandas wandered the treetops of the Himalaya forests in South Asia. But with the large number of people entering their habitats, these shy and solitary (独处的) creatures can’t meet each other and reproduce. Now the population has declined by more than 50 percent.
To save the red pandas here, Lama and his research team need to know which parts of the forests the remaining pandas are living in. That’s where the tracking devices come in. “Mapping the path they travel will let us know which areas of the forest need to be reforested to connect the most red pandas to one another,” Lama says.
Because red pandas can be hard to spot and catch, no one had ever used GPS collars to study them in the wild. But Lama and his team had a great plan. They first would make sure the animals would be comfortable wearing the collars. So, they tested the collars on two red pandas in a local zoo. “We convinced them to let us measure their necks and fit them with the collars by letting them choose a reward — grapes, apples, or bananas.” Lama says.
Then came the next challenge: catching red pandas. Once they spotted a red panda, a team of vets set up a tall, fence-like tarp (油布) around the base of the tree with a box trap at the bottom. That way when the red panda climbed down the tree surrounded by the tarp, it had no choice but to enter the trap. It was then quickly controlled, collared and released.
From September to December 2019, the team trapped 10 red pandas — six females and four males. Their collars recorded their location every two hours and sent the information to researchers once a day. Over the next year, the team tracked the red pandas’ movements so that they identified where to plant new forests and helped red pandas meet more easily.
12. What has led to the smaller number of red pandas in South Asia?
A. Their normal lives are badly disturbed.
B. They aren’t adapted to living in groups.
C. Their ability to reproduce is weakened.
D. They try to avoid meeting each other.
13. Why did the research team track the movements of red pandas?
A. To study their living behaviors.
B. To protect them from hunters.
C. To know where to plant forests.
D. To find if they can often meet.
14. How did the research team convince red pandas to wear collars?
A. By offering them treats. B. By using traps.
C. By setting tarps. D. By measuring their necks.
15. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The research on red pandas’ reproduction.
B. The clever way to keep track of red pandas.
C. The shrinking population of red pandas.
D. The way of building habitats for red pandas.
A 13. C 14. A 15. B

Handwritten thank-you letters are such a simple way of making other people feel good, it is strange that so few people write them anymore. At work, a thank-you letter to employees is unbelievably effective. It costs little and has no side effects. The effort involved in writing letters very low. The pleasure on receiving them is very high. ___16___
Doug Conant, manager of Campbell’s Soup Company since 2001, knows the power of thank you letters. He said that every day he works with an assistant, searching the company for people deserving thanks. ___17___ Over the past 10 years he has sent 30, 000 thank-you letters to his employees — more than 10 each day. The reward is huge: his company has remained one of the most successful in its field for years.
___18___ There seem to be three reasons. Firstly, chief executives (主管) running companies think their own work is more valuable than that of others. ___19___ Secondly, they aren’t close enough to the business to know who deserves thanks. Thirdly, they have forgotten the strange human truth that almost everyone would do almost anything in return for a few words of appreciation.
In these days of such busy schedules and people running all over the place and trying to get ahead, sometimes we forget the simplest things in life are the most powerful and rewarding. You need to think to yourself about a time someone sent you a thank-you and how much it meant to you. ___20___
A. He then writes them a thank-you letter.
B. Why are thank-you letters so important?
C. You may ask what side effects exactly mean.
D. This makes them an excellent way to reward and motivate staff.
E. But if these letters are so inspiring, why don’t more managers write them?
F. Always remember to “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you!”
G. Since no one ever writes them thank-you letters they don’t write any themselves.
D 17. A 18. E 19. G 20. F
根据前文“The effort involved in writing letters very low. The pleasure on receiving them is very high.(写信所费的功夫很低。收到礼物的快乐是非常高的。)”可知,该部分的主题应是手写感谢信,因此设空句应承接前文进行总结。选项D“This makes them an excellent way to reward and motivate staff.(这使它们成为奖励和激励员工的绝佳方式。)”
前文“He said that every day he works with an assistant, searching the company for people deserving thanks.(他说,他每天和助手一起在公司里寻找值得感谢的人。)” A“He then writes them a thank-you letter.(然后他会给他们写一封感谢信。)” 故选A项。
根据后文“There seem to be three reasons.(似乎有三个原因。)” E“But if these letters are so inspiring, why don’t more managers write them?(但如果这些信如此鼓舞人心,为什么没有更多的经理来写呢? )”为“为什么”句,与后文在语境语意上衔接紧密,且句中“But”与前文构成转折关系,符合语境分析。故选E项。
【19题详解】
设空句应承接前文,进一步解释不写感谢信的原因。前文“Firstly, chief executives running companies think their own work is more valuable than that of others.(首先,运营公司的首席执行官认为自己的工作比别人的更有价值。)” G“Since no one ever writes them thank-you letters they don’t write any themselves.(因为没人给他们写过感谢信,所以他们自己也不写感谢信了。)”
根据前文“You need to think to yourself about a time someone sent you a thank-you and how much it meant to you.(你需要想想有一次有人给你发了一封感谢信,这对你来说有多重要。)” F“Always remember to ‘Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you!’(永远记住“你希望别人怎么对你,你就怎么对别人!”)”

Monty was the son of a horse trainer. Like his father, the young boy would go from stable to stable, farm to farm and ranch (大牧场) to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about who he wanted to be and what he wanted to do when he grew up.
That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the tracks. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.
He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. Much to his surprise, on the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class.” The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “Why did I receive an F?”
The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from a poor horse trainer family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock (良种畜) and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “If you rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Several years later, that same schoolteacher brought 30kids to camp out on Monty’s ranch for a week.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The boy went home and asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to make up your mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.” Finally, after thinking about it for a night, the young boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He said, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream. And I will sit in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch.”
Several years later, that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on Monty’s ranch for a week. It came as a big surprise when the teacher knew Monty was the owner of the horse ranch. When the teacher was leaving, she said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately, you are firm and don’t give up.” Monty was glad that he could stick to his dream.

D. The project made the fish population reduce there.
6. What does the underlined word “degraded” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Worsened. B. Promoted. C. protected. D. Improved.
7. What can we learn about the marine ranching project from the last two paragraphs?
A. It has made Wang Aimin promoted.
B. It can create great economic value.
C. It can serve as a model for other similar projects.
D. It has become the best marine ranching project in the world.
10 How much did the students make with the five-dollar investment on average?
D

He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the tracks.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The boy went home and asked his father what he should do.
