Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for ideas. I remember when I was learning English, I felt uncomfortable about speaking. I could remember lots of words and knew grammar rules, but speaking was difficult. I now feel a lot more confident about speaking, so here are some ideas that I have taken from my own experience.
Don’t worry about making mistakes. Other people will still know your meaning and they probably won’t notice your mistakes.
Use every chance you get to speak. For example, it’s a good idea to use only English in class and not to speak to your classmates in your own language. At home, you should also try practicing new words and grammar learnt in class.
Think about extra speaking practice outside the classroom. You can join a conversation group, such as the chat groups in the study center. They are free to join.
Practice speaking online. There are lots of websites where you can communicate with someone from all around the world.
I hope this helps you and please come to me if you have other problems.
Best wishes,
Eliza

I’m Henry. Four weeks ago, I went to Antarctica (南极洲) with nineteen other students. I decided to take the trip after seeing a program about how Antarctica was affected (影响) by climate (气候) change. I thought it’d be a great way to see its effects on Antarctica directly.
I was surprised by how little life there was in Antarctica. Documentaries show lands covered in penguins (企鹅) and seas full of whales, but of course, the film-makers stay there for months to film so many. I saw some, but not in the numbers I’d expected.
In our first group meeting, we all shared why we’d taken the trip. There were twenty students in total and twenty different explanations. Even though we were all a bit shy, we made friends with each other from day one. You often get a few people in a group who like telling the others what to do. Luckily, this wasn’t the case with us. Because we wanted to share messages, we set up an online group. It was nice, as we became pretty close.
I’ve become much more serious about helping the environment after learning more about the effects brought by climate change in Antarctica. I can also understand why people do things that harm the environment, as I’ve done them all myself. It’s not about blaming (责备) anyone but about changing people’s habits. We should try to live a low-carbon life (低碳生活).

(23-24九年级上·新疆克孜勒苏·期末)Though chopsticks are used in many Asian countries today, they have their beginnings in China. Chinese history says that the Chinese first had chopsticks as far back as the Xia Dynasty(朝代). Gold and silver chopsticks followed later. The most expensive ones are made of ivory or hard green stones. Chopsticks tell us something about Chinese tradition in their own way. In ancient times some people used hard green stones or gold chopsticks to show they are rich. In history many kings used silver chopsticks to eat their food to see if it was poisonous(有毒的). It was said that if the food was poisonous, the silver chopsticks would change its color. It’s traditional to give chopsticks to a daughter when she marries. They carry the wish that she will have a baby very soon, for “chopsticks” has the similar pronunciation to “quick a son” in Chinese.
An old Chinese story also mentions chopsticks. An old man teaches his sons a lesson by showing how he can easily break a single chopstick by hand but not a number of them.
In China, chopsticks and good luck are connected. So on the Chinese New Year’s Eve, many families will lay out new chopsticks as a way of asking for good luck.

People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different, but everyone has the ability to learn. I’ll share some of my experiences. I once took an English course at a university, but I mostly learned English by myself.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. Use it or lose it, try to use more English to express yourself. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. You can keep practicing what you have learned. Now I’m in America, and most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps. I really improved my speaking and listening.
When I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Learning from mistakes is a kind of courage. While traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. I didn’t pay more attention to the people who laughed at me. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing and give you some suggestions for improvement.

Sad but Beautiful
Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I’ve ever heard. The erhu sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing, a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue is a piece which all the great erhu masters play and praise. It has become one of China’s national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a picture of Abing’s own life but also makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or painful experiences.

Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for ideas.
