A huge cat lives here. She waits behind the door every night.” Just then, they heard a soft “Meow”. “Run!” Max turned pale and shouted. The two mice raced through holes, up ropes and down pipes. The cat’s claws almost caught Pip’s tail. At last, they escaped into a dark corner, breathing hard. Pip’s heart was still beating fast. “Thank you, Max, but I miss my quiet field. He sold food and newspapers on trains when he was twelve. He used the money he earned to buy books and materials for experiments. He set up a lab in a train car. Also around this time, he lost most of his hearing. When he was fifteen, he saved a boy’s life. The boy was about to be run over by a boxcar when Edison grabbed him. He invented ways to make the telegraph better. He said he would not give up, no matter what happened. For years, people had tried to make a safe light bulb that most people could buy. Many inventors had tried and failed. First, Edison and his team had to find the right filament (灯丝)—the part of a light bulb that glows. They tried thousands of materials and finally found one that worked. People were amazed by Edison’s electric lights. During his life, Edison had 1093 patents (专利), which was a record. The park includes 415 square miles of natural beauty. The air is fresh and clean. It features mountain lakes that mirror high peaks above them. The park is home to mountain lions, moose and many other wild animals. RMNP is a small part of the Rocky Mountain Range (山脉). Compared to other mountain ranges, the Rockies are young. They were pushed up around 165 million years ago. Later on, glaciers (冰川) moved downhill and carved out their peaks. The Rocky Mountains form much of the Continental Divide (大陆分水岭). This is a rocky spine that runs along North America and divides the way water flows. Water on the western side of the divide flows west to the Pacific Ocean. Water on the eastern side flows to the Atlantic Ocean. RMNP has several different environments. It has wet areas and forests of pine trees. The trees stop growing at about 11,500 feet. This is called the tree line. Higher than this the weather is too stormy and the soil too rocky for trees to grow. Different areas in RMNP provide homes for different animals. And about 280 kinds of birds have been seen in RMNP. They include eagles and ravens, which ride on mountain winds. A visit to RMNP can be free and easy or full of adventure. In the park, the roads allow drivers to enjoy great views. Trail Ridge Road is the highest paved road in any U.S. national park. However, this road is closed in winter, when snowdrifts can be more than 20 feet deep. RMNP is one of the most popular national parks in the United States. During the summer months, the park can be very crowded. Sometimes there are traffic jams. Many people now ride buses in the park rather than drive their cars. Still, anyone willing to lace up their hiking boots can go on an adventure in this park. 36. How are the Rocky Mountains different from other mountain ranges? A. They are larger. B. They are younger. A large blue whale can be over 33 meters long. It can weigh nearly as much as 20 school buses. Whales are mammals (哺乳动物). They have lungs and must surface for air. Whales do not breathe through their mouths. Instead, they breathe through a blow hole on the top of their heads. There are about 75 kinds of whales. Most whales fall into one of two groups. One group has teeth. They are called toothed whales. The other group does not have teeth. They are called Baleen whales (须鲸). Toothed whales, which include dolphins, have jaws lined with sharp teeth. They eat fish, squid and other sea life. Larger toothed whales even eat seals. The killer whale or orca is a well-known toothed whale. Orcas are called killer whales because they are skilled at hunting other animals. Baleen whales have a special material called baleen that hangs from their upper jaw. Baleen looks a little like a giant feather or comb. It filters (过滤) small fish and very small sea life from the ocean. It seems strange that such large creatures eat such tiny food. He lived in a quiet field under an old apple tree. Every day he ate simple food, such as wild corn, roots and a few berries. He was happy because no one ever bothered him. One sunny morning, Pip decided to visit his cousin, Max, who lived in the big city. “City life must be exciting!” Pip thought. He packed a small bag and jumped onto a farmer’s truck. When Pip arrived, he could not believe his eyes. Tall buildings, shining cars and hundreds of mice hurried along the streets. Max welcomed Pip warmly and took him to a beautiful apartment. The kitchen was bigger than Pip’s whole house. There were cakes, cheese, bread and even chocolate. Pip’s mouth watered. “You eat like a king!” he cried. “Shhh,” whispered Max. “Speak softly. I’d rather share one safe corn seed than a hundred cheeses with a cat.” The next day Pip rode home. B Thomas Edison loved to question things. He loved to learn how things worked. He also loved to make things work better. Many people think of him as one of the greatest inventors of all time. Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847. He did not do well in school. He wanted to question and explore. At that time, school was mostly about remembering facts, so his mom took him out of school and taught him at home. The child’s father offered to teach Edison how to be a telegraph operator. People were amazed by Edison’s electric lights. During his life, Edison had 1093 patents (专利), which was a record. He worked until he was more than eighty years old. C Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in Colorado, shows off the best of the Rocky Mountains. 36.
