Even in early time, people could realize the importance of dreams and know that dreams gave meaning to life. Every great achievement has been the result of years of dreaming. If a person has a dream and holds fast to it, he or she will find a way to bring it into reality (现实).
Children do not have much experience or knowledge. However, they are natural dreamers. We should not laugh at them for being naive. Many great men were dreamers when they were children. Teenagers and young people should also be encouraged (鼓励) to dream. The world is full of successful teenagers and young people. They dreamt and their dreams changed their lives and even the world. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are the good examples. They have developed technology and brought great progress to humans besides making money for themselves.
Older people should believe that it is never too late to dream and that human mind is never too old to make dreams turn into reality. Colonel Sanders realized his dreams at the age of 67 and set up the biggest fried chicken company KFC in the world.

China has good news for families with young children. Nowadays, many families feel stressed to raise young children, as costs for daily needs and early education are increasing.
So starting in January 2025, the government will put a new official rule into practice to support parents. This plan means families with babies and toddlers—children aged between one and three—will get money from the government. The national plan is made to give parents more support to raise children.
So who can get this money? Every family in the country that has a child under three years old can get this financial help. For each young child, the family will receive 3,600 yuan every year, which is about 300 yuan per month—enough to ease some of the monthly cost. They will keep getting this money until the child is three. It doesn’t matter if the child is the first, second or third one in the family—all are included, showing fair support for every family.
Before this rule became national, some cities like Shanghai and Chengdu tried it first, and it was very successful. Parents in those cities praised the plan, saying it really helped them manage daily expenses. This money is a big help, especially since raising a child costs a lot. Parents can use it to buy food, clothes and toys for their kids. Maybe they can even spend a little on fun activities like visiting a children’s museum.
Getting the money is easy too. Parents don’t need to deal with lots of complicated papers. They can just apply online through a government app or website. After applying, the review process is quick—most families get a reply within a week. The government hopes this plan will let every young child grow up happily in a warm and supportive environment.

Most customers did not care about the health of the carter (马车夫) or the horses. But this nice customer cared. His name is Mr Grant.
One day, Mr Grant and his friend were in our cab. He saw a carter whipping (鞭打) his horse. He shouted at the carter to stop.
The name of the carter’s employer was on the side of the cart. Jerry wrote down the name of the carter’s employer.
Mr Grant’s friend said, “This is none of our business. Why worry about other men’s horses?”
“Do you know why there are so many problems in the world?” Mr Grant asked his friend.
His friend did not answer.
“It’s because too many people look after only their own business,” Mr Grant said.
I was happy to have nice customers like Mr Grant. I was also happy that I worked for Jerry, because other owners often hurt their horses.
One day, I was waiting for Jerry in town. A horse came by. She was pulling a cart. The horse was Ginger. She looked very sick. She couldn’t walk well. She looked very sad.
“Hello, Black Beauty,” she said. “You’re the only friend I ever had.” I wanted to talk to her, but she couldn’t stop. The carter whipped her to make her keep moving.
Later that day, I passed a dead horse on the side of the road. That horse was Ginger. I was very sad. “That poor horse had a hard life,” I thought. Many horses had difficult lives. Jerry owned me, but some carters did not own their horses. These drivers had to work the horses hard to pay back the owners.
Other jobs were hard, too. The butcher’s horses had to go very fast. The customers wanted their meat to be fresh, so they didn’t like to wait. The baker’s horses carried a lot of weight. The horses would become very weak.
Jerry was kind to me. He fed me good food, and we rested every Sunday. Our work was hard in the winter, but Jerry was kind. He always helped people.
One day, a poor young woman came up to us. She was carrying a heavy child. “Please help me,” she said to my driver. “I must take my child to the hospital.” “It’s a long way to the hospital,” Jerry said. “You can’t carry that child all that way. Take a cab.”
“I have no money for a cab,” the woman said.
Jerry drove them for free. We took the mother and her child to the doctor. The doctor helped them, and the child got better.
—From Black Beauty
57. What does Jerry do?
A. He is a carter. B. He works on Mr Grant’s farm.
C. He is a worker in a factory. D. He works in a rich family.
58. What can we know about Mr Grant from the story?
A. He owns horses and is kind to them.
B. He looks after only his own business.
C. He cares about the health of other men’s horses but can do nothing to help them.
D. He thinks everyone should do something to help solve the problems in the world.
59. What does “I” think of Jerry?
A. Cold and selfish. B. Wise and careful. C. Kind and helpful. D. Rude and bad.
60. Ginger was dead on the side of the road because ________.
A she was very old and sick
B. her master disliked her
C. she was often whipped and lived a hard life
D. she had few friends and no one could help her
61. How did Jerry help the young woman and her child?

Dreaming is a wonderful ability which can lead to wonderful results. Olympic records were broken by players who were brave enough to dream. No one is too young or too old to dream and to make dreams come true.

A. only families with one child can get the help
B. raising children in China is not expensive
C. the plan was tested in some cities before
D. parents need to fill in many papers to apply
