学情分析:
Analysis of learners:
Senior One students are equipped with basic knowledge about natural disasters. They also have a certain degree of teamwork ability, and can carry out effective and successful communication, cooperation and discussion. However, they lack of vocabulary accumulation of natural disasters. They also can’t communicate with each other about a certain topic smoothly. The teacher can use a variety of input methods to improve the teaching effect, and prepare them for learning the topic of this unit.

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

Master words and phrases about common natural disasters.

Improve listening and communicative skills through group activities.

Step 1: Lead-in (5 min)
1. Have students watch a video about nature’s beauty.
2. Guide students to appreciate and understand the quote.
3. Have students watch a video about the destructive power of nature and summarize.
(Purpose: To activate prior knowledge about natural disasters and better understand the quote.)
Step 2: Recognition (10 min)
1. Recognize the common natural disasters according to pictures and read related news reports about its power of damage.
2. Word game: Teacher presents English words, and asks students to answer with Chinese meaning.
3. Teacher presents more pictures of common natural disasters.
(Purpose: To deepen the understanding of the power of nature and master words related to natural disasters.)
Step 3: Video-watching (10 min)
1. Have students watch a video and finish related exercises.
2. Have students observe and summarize the sentence patterns of the three sentences.
① [原因] can cause [灾害], which is [简单定义].
② When [灾害发生], [具体事物] [动作] through [地点].
③ A large amount of [物质] [动作] down/into/toward [地方] is called [灾害].
(Purpose: To guide students to get the key information and summarize the sentence patterns, scaffolding for the sentence pattern imitation.)
Step 4: After-watching (10 min)
Try to use the sentence patterns to explain why or how flood, wildfire and tsunami happened. (Teacher gives some words or phrases to support.)
( Purpose: To exercise students’ writing skills.)
Step 5: Thinking (8 min)
1. Watch a video and answer: do you think whether human should blame nature for natural disasters?
2. Conclusion: Our actions decide our future.
( Purpose: To reflect the reason for nature’s anger and develop critical thinking.)
Step 6: Homework (2 min)
Mini writing: choose one disaster and describe its formation and consequences, using 5-8 sentences.
( Purpose: To consolidate what students have learned and prepare them for the learning of this unit.)
