Breaking Bad Habits
There's no time like the start of a new year to get working on a better, healthier you. Susannah Hickling advises on where to begin.
Making excuses not to exercise
Too tired to go to the gym? Not enough time to squeeze in a swim? Fitness doesn't always have to involve long training sessions. Short periods of exercise can be good too. For example, go for a shorter walk, but introduce some jogging in the middle, or walk faster between two fixed points, for example. And remember that vacuum cleaning, gardening and climbing stairs can also improve fitness.
Not getting enough sleep
Not getting enough sleep at night can be harmful for health, and may lead to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. To make sure you're well rested every night, make a new habit-set an alarm for half an hour before you plan to go to bed. This will give you more time to get ready and more sleep time.
Being addicted to your phone
Smartphones can be a terrible time waster. What's more, too much social media can make you feel dissatisfied with life or full of the fear of missing out - "FOMO". Limit your screen time with an app, such as Apple's built-in Screen Time or Flipd for Android. Or simply turn off distracting alerts or delete apps from your phone and only use them on your computer.
Being negative
It's one of the biggest barriers to maintaining good habits-and to your sense of wellbeing generally. Try to fight the habit of being too hard on yourself by finding three positive thoughts for every negative thought that pops into your head.
21. What is the key advice for busy people to exercise?
A. Do long gym workouts. B. Give up fitness plans.
C. Use short daily activities. D. Focus on jogging only.
22. What is recommended to ensure enough sleep?
A. Setting a bedtime alarm. B. Eating a big meal.
C. Drinking water before bed. D. Using phones in bed.
23. How should one deal with negative thoughts according to the passage?
A. Accept them without any active response. B. Focus on personal weaknesses.
C. Find three positive thoughts. D. Share them on social media.
B
In spring 2017, Avila Pinedo and her classmates from Garey High School founded the school’s first invention club. Noticing their low-income community’s high diabetes (糖尿病) rate and insufficient healthcare access, the team planned to invent a toenail-cutting tool for diabetic patients. Surprisingly, after submitting the idea to Lemelson-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Lemelson-MIT), the Garey High group was awarded one of the 15 InvenTeams for 2017-2018.
Yet subsequently, the teens questioned their proposed invention due to sharp-tool risks. Concerned about the new direction, they approached the Lemelson-MIT Program for advice, where Leigh Estabrooks, a seasoned academic, encouraged them, “Invention advances; changes and adjustments are common — that’s the process.” Despite the change in plans, Estabrooks praised the community-centered approach.
With renewed determination, the team resolved to develop a tool to monitor blood oxygen levels in diabetics feet. This shift was essential and demanded considerable effort. Avila Pinedo recalled the team invested every spare moment in research.
Each team member performed specific functions in the process. Avila Pinedo led — the development of the sensor (传感器) that measured blood oxygen levels. Lacking prior technical skills, Avila Pinedo determined to employ online resources to acquire how to build the electrical system and finally built the sensor. “Invention offers a chance to explore the boundaries of your creativity and capabilities and unlock the power of the invention mindset. It doesn’t mean you must know how to build a sensor, but you do need to take responsibility for your own education,” Pinedo said. Ultimately, under the team’s cooperation, their invention, named Heart and Sole, became a reality.
The experience lit Avila Pinedo’s passion, inspiring her to serve as an advisor to primary pupils recently. Guiding them through hands-on engineering and programming for a STEM initiative, she said. “Invention is transformational,” witnessing its empowering influence on InvenTeamers and others who realize that applying imagination and concepts can unlock fresh prospects, therefore motivating them to further explore education with the belief that invention is accessible to all.
24. What motivated the club’s invention?
A. Expectation from Garey High School. B. Community health issues.
C. Regional income inequality. D. Requirements from InvenTeams.
25. Which of the following would Estabrooks agree concerning invention?
A. Redesigns are natural. B. Original plans are the key.
C. Instructions determine success. D. Academic support counts.
26. What contributed to Avila Pinedo’s success in developing the sensor?
A. Constant trials. B. Self-directed learning.
C. Financial backing. D. Risk-taking mindset.
27. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To introduce Avila Pinedo’s future plan.
B. To show the prospect of Heart and Sole.
C. To acknowledge the InvenTeam’s devotion.
D. To stress the nature and impact of invention.

Having worked in the AI field for over a decade, Zhang Qiang never imagined his expertise would intersect with jiandu — China’s 3,000-year-old bamboo and wooden slips — until he and his team developed DeepJiandu, the world’s first large-scale dataset dedicated to character recognition for these cultural relics. Regarded as China’s earliest form of books, jiandu served as a bridge in the evolution of Chinese writing — from oracle bone (甲骨文) and bronze inscriptions to later paper documents.
Unlike existing tools designed to detect readable characters on ancient paper documents, DeepJiandu was created specifically to tackle the challenges of deciphering (辨认) jiandu characters under complex conditions, such as characters of varying sizes from different dynasties, connected strokes in ancient handwriting, and characters damaged or faded by natural elements — issues deemed the “most common yet unavoidable” in jiandu preservation.
To aid researchers in studying jiandu, the DeepJiandu dataset offers 7,416 infrared (红外线的) images generated from scans of over 40,000 physical jiandu samples. The team analyzed individual samples to produce nearly 100,000 annotations (评注). Though seemingly minor, these annotations “significantly clarify character meanings,” enabling even novices to interpret jiandu contents.
The team’s vision of an open-source “lexicon” for jiandu predates the dataset itself. In June 2024, they launched an even more comprehensive data-sharing platform dedicated to jiandu relics, supported by Northwest Normal University.
Museums are leveraging technology to enhance visitor engagement. For instance, the Changsha Jiandu Museum in Hunan — home to over 100,000 Wu Kingdom jiandu pieces — uses AR-enabled picture books with QR codes to illustrate historical narratives. Similarly, the Gansu Jiandu Museum employs AI-guided robots named “Jian” and “Du” to interact with visitors. As museum director Zhu Jianjun notes, these digital innovations exemplify China’s integration of technology and cultural preservation, bridging ancient texts with modern tools to make jiandu accessible to all.
28. What can we learn about jiandu from the first paragraph?
A. It served as a transitional medium for Chinese writing.
B. It totally replaced oracle bone and bronze inscriptions.
C. It was mainly used for artistic purposes in ancient times.
D. It was made of wood clips with a history of 5000 years old.
29. What technical features help DeepJiandu address character recognition problems?
A. Bronze inscription comparison tools.
B. Interactive robots with voice guidance.
C. Infrared images and detailed explanations.
D. AR picture books with QR code scanning.
30. What does the underlined word “lexicon” in paragraph 4 probably refer to?
A. A collection of ancient relics. B. A standardized writing system.
C. A digital preservation technique. D. A reference database for characters.
31. Why are the museums in Changsha and Gansu mentioned?
A. To emphasize jiandu’s commercial value. B. To highlight tech-based educational system.
C. To promote traditional museum practices. D. To compare regional preservation policies.
D
Powered by the enthusiasm of fans, many stars are emphasizing sustainability in their tours and live events.
In many parts of the world, summer calendars are packed with music festivals. But on 25 August, Act 1.5, one of such shows, tried to be something different. Advertised as a “climate action accelerator (加速器)”, it showed the cooperation between a band called Massive Attack and scientists at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester, UK, to reduce carbon emissions (排放) in the live music industry.
Such efforts are much needed. In 2010, researchers estimated that the UK music industry produced some 540, 000 tonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions annually. Live music accounted for 74%of that. Those figures are likely to have risen.
Many in the music industry are advocating ever more loudly on sustainability. Radiohead, Coldplay, and Billie Eilish are just some of the famous Western stars who have declared initiatives to make live events more sustainable.
These initiatives have not always met with the approval of climate campaigners. One common criticism is that stars’ advocacy often focuses on the actions of individual fans. When it comes to high-energy aspects of touring, such as stage power requirements and artists’ travel, their preferred solution is often to find alternative ways to cancel out impact, rather than reducing emissions directly.
However, it is heartening to see that some real change has already been achieved. In 2023, for the first time, the long-running Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom was powered only by fossil-fuel-free (非化石燃料) energy. In June 2024, Coldplay announced that direct emissions from its current world tour were almost 60%lower than those of its 2016-17 stadium tour.
Historically, music has played a key part in social movements. The industry now has the chance to be a role model for real change. A 2022 report by researchers at the University of Glasgow, UK, found that music fans are more likely to care about climate change than non-music fans. So, the change will come when it is driven by those highest up in the music industry and backed by good science.
32. What makes the Act 1.5 music event special?
A. Demonstrating a different musical style.
B. Promoting the cooperation between bands.
C. Funding scientific research on climate.
D. Taking green actions based on science.
33. What is the purpose of listing data in the third paragraph?
A. To highlight the UK music industry’s success.
B. To indicate the challenges in the UK music industry.
C. To criticize the rising costs of the UK music festivals.
D. To stress the emission impact of the UK music industry.
34. Why do climate campaigners sometimes disapprove of stars’ advocacy?
A. It emphasizes reducing artists’ travel emission.
B. It focuses on fans cutting down emissions.
C. It prefers to use fossil-fuel-free energy.
D. It ignores the action of individual fans.
35. What is the author’s attitude to the music industry addressing climate issues?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Critical.

Hanson was a 6 Grade student in Pine Tree Primary School. He was known for his kindness and lively spirit. Hanson had a heart of gold; he loved helping others, which made him a favorite among his teachers and classmates. His academic performance was commendable, and punctuality was one of his strongest virtues. For instance, no matter the weather — be it a scorching hot day or a chilly, rainy morning — Hanson would always be the first to arrive at school, his backpack slung over one shoulder, a bright smile lighting up his face.
However, despite his many admirable qualities, Hanson harbored a secret fear: dogs. Ever since he was a little boy, the mere sight of a dog could send shivers down his spine. One particular memory stood out vividly in his mind. It was a sunny afternoon when he was playing in the park with his friends. Suddenly, a large, friendly-looking dog approached them, wagging its tail. While the other children laughed and played with the dog, Hanson froze, feeling a mix of fear and embarrassment. From that day on, he avoided any situation where he might encounter a dog, even if it meant taking a longer route home from school.
One day, Hanson woke up early as usual, ready to start another day at school. As he walked along the busy street, his eyes were fixed on the path ahead, determined not to be late. But then, something unusual caught his attention. A small puppy was wandering alone in the middle of the road, running nervously among cars. The traffic was heavy, and the danger was apparent. Without a second thought, Hanson’s fear of dogs was overshadowed by his concern for the puppy’s safety. He knew what he had to do.
Ignoring his own fear, Hanson bravely stepped into the road, calling softly to the puppy. With gentle hands, he picked up the trembling puppy and carried it to the side of the road. He looked around, hoping to spot the puppy’s owner, but there was no sign of anyone. Time ticked away, and Hanson realized he was going to be late for school. However, the puppy’s well-being was more important than being punctual. After waiting for a while with no luck, Hanson became a little anxious. He couldn’t wait there for long.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then, Hanson had an idea.__________________________________________________________________

From junior high school, David knew that he wanted to be an artist who could play baseball. He chose the Art Center College of Design in California. After obtaining a degree in fine art, he went to New York, where he continued to paint his illustrations. He first painted some politically colored illustrations for New York Times, Time and Rolling Stone. Later, by chance, he drew illustrations for Julius Lester’s How Many Spots Does a Jaguar Have? This book won Newbery Medal. In 1994, David created How Georgie Radbourn Saved Baseball, which was the first book he completed independently. And it was the best picture book of the year in New York Times.
David’s dad also paints pictures for medical books, and his grandma is a designer of fashion bags. Overall, David’s mom has the greatest influence on his creation. She liked to save her son’s childhood paintings. She sent those childish pictures to David, unexpectedly inspiring him to create No, David! This picture book won him instant fame and many awards.

28. A 29. C 30. D 31. B

A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Critical.
32. D 33. D 34. B 35. C

Those figures are likely to have risen.(这样的努力是非常有必要的。
根据文章第五段“One common criticism is that stars’ advocacy often focuses on the actions of individual fans. When it comes to high-energy aspects of touring, such as stage power requirements and artists’ travel, their preferred solution is often to find alternative ways to cancel out impact, rather than reducing emissions directly.(一个常见的批评是,明星们的倡导往往集中在个体粉丝的行动上。
根据文章倒数第二段“However, it is heartening to see that some real change has already been achieved. In 2023, for the first time, the long-running Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom was powered only by fossil-fuel-free(非化石燃料)energy. In June 2024, Coldplay announced that direct emissions from its current world tour were almost 60%lower than those of its 2016-17 stadium tour.(然而,令人欣慰的是,一些切实的改变已经实现了。

36. 根据上文“Normally, everyone else is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions. Keeping it in mind that you cannot change others, no matter how hard you try. (通常,每个人都有权拥有自己的信仰和观点。请记住,无论你多么努力,你都无法改变别人)”以及下文“Even if you try changing others, you will only be hurting yourself in the process. The best way would be to change yourself. (即使你尝试改变别人,在此过程中你只会伤害自己。最好的方法是改变自己)”可知,此空应进一步说明人与人之间在改变彼此方面的关系。C选项“Similarly, they shouldn’t be able to change you(同样地,他们也不应该能够改变你)”中的“Similarly”表明与上文“你无法改变别人”形成并列关系,阐述了双方都不应试图改变对方的观点,符合语境。故选C项。
37. 分析语篇可知,此处应为本段的小标题。根据空后的“Whenever you get hurt, it is good to tell others how you really feel.”(每当你受伤时,告诉别人你的真实感受是好的)以及“The best way to do this is by using ‘I’ statements instead of ‘You’ statements.”(做到这一点的最佳方法是使用“我”语句而不是“你”语句)可知,本段主要讲述的是使用“我”语句来表达感受。
38. 根据空前的“Whenever you get hurt, it is good to tell others how you really feel.”(每当你受伤时,告诉别人你的真实感受是好的)以及空后的“You need to tell others how you feel about the situation but in a gentle way. (你需要告诉别人你对这种情况的感受,但要以温和的方式)”可知,此空应强调隐藏感受的坏处,从而论证表达感受的重要性。D选项“Masking your feelings will only harm you(掩盖你的感受只会伤害你)”中的“Masking your feelings”与上文“tell others how you really feel”形成对比,“only harm you”说明了掩盖感受的不良后果,符合语境。故选D项。
39. 根据空后的“If not controlled, this can have severe consequences in your relationship. You need to mind whatever you say and do. (如果不加以控制,这会在你的人际关系中产生严重后果。你需要注意你所说的和所做的一切)”可知,此空应提及情绪化时言行可能出现的问题。G选项“Oftentimes, we say a lot when we are emotional, especially when angry(通常,我们在情绪化时会说很多话,尤其是在生气的时候)”中的“say a lot when we are emotional”指出了情绪化时的具体表现,“especially when angry”进一步强调了这种情况,与下文“ If not controlled”形成逻辑衔接,符合语境。故选G项。
40. 根据空前的“Let’s say that you get into a fight with your friends, and you also get hurt. (假设你和你的朋友吵架了,你也受伤了)”以及空后的“This is what I mean, focus on yourself in a situation like this and you will grow as a person and will also become emotionally mature. (这就是我的意思,在这种情况下专注于自己,你将作为一个人成长,也将变得情感成熟)”可知,此空应说明在与朋友吵架受伤时应有的正确做法,避免不良后果。E选项“You should never allow your hurt feelings to start an argument(你永远不应该让你受伤的感觉引发争吵)”中的“never allow your hurt feelings to start an argument”给出了具体的行为建议,与下文“focus on yourself”相呼应,符合语境。

故填have been forgotten。
故填an。
故填without。
故填to serve。
故填and。
故填which。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Para 1:
Then, Hanson had an idea. He decided to take the puppy to a nearby shop, explaining the situation to the shopkeeper and asking him to look after the puppy until its owner could be found. The rest of the school day seemed to drag on for Hanson. All he could think about was the little puppy. As soon as the final bell rang, Hanson rushed back to the shop. To his dismay, the puppy was nowhere to be seen. His heart sank, and he anxiously asked the shopkeeper about the puppy. Relief washed over him when the shopkeeper explained that he had managed to find the puppy’s owner. The owner was so grateful that they had asked the shopkeeper to convey their heartfelt thanks to Hanson.
Para 2:
From that day forward, Hanson’s fear of dogs totally faded. He felt a sense of joy and pride, not just because he had overcome his fear of dogs, but because he had helped a vulnerable creature in need. He is never afraid of dogs anymore. He even asked his parents to buy a dog for him. The experience taught him that sometimes, the most rewarding moments come from stepping outside of one’s comfort zone and doing what is right, regardless of personal fears. And so, Hanson continued to live his life with courage and compassion, ready to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever it was needed.

Dear Sherlock,
As the chairman of Student Union, I am, with heartfelt sincerity, writing to invite you to deliver a speech concerning daily exercise.
The speech is scheduled at 5:00 p. m. this Friday in the stadium. The reason why we choose this theme is, initially, students’ insufficient awareness of exercise in daily life. Burdened with loads of schoolwork, seldom do students spare time for doing exercise. Additionally, taking into account the national appealing to cultivate all-round students, practicing exercise enables us to be qualified graduates.
Your accepting the invitation would be highly appreciated, and you, a sport enthusiast, can undoubtedly juice the speech up and make it reach a wider audience.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then, Hanson had an idea._________________________________________________________________
