China's first Nobel winner in Physics,Yang Chen-Ning,died in Beijing on Oct.18 at
103.Tsinghua University,where he was a professor,called him"immortal"in its statement.
Widely recognized as one of the 20th century's greatest physicists,Yang made great
contributions to modern science.Together with Tsung-dao Lee,Yang was awarded the
Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 for proposing the revolutionary(革命性的)concept of
"parity non-conservation in weak interaction",making them the first Chinese-born scientists
to receive the honor. With Robert Mills,he developed the "Yang-Mills gauge theory"-a
cornerstone of modern physics that laid the foundation for the Standard Model of particle
physics, with significance comparable to Maxwell's equations and Einstein's general theory
of relativity.
Born in Hefei in 1922,Yang studied at China's National Southwest Associated
University and Tsinghua, then earned a U.S.PhD in 1948.He worked at Princeton and New
York's Stony Brook University, founding a theoretical physics institute there.
Deeply devoted to his homeland,Yang played a key role in advancing China's science
and education. In 1971,he visited China, which started more exchanges between Chinese
and overseas Chinese scholars.People saw him as a pioneer who helped China and the US
communicate in academics. He also helped set up a group called the Committee on
Scholarly Communication with China, supporting nearly 100 Chinese scholars to study in
the US.Many of these scholars later became leaders in China's science and technology. In
1999,Yang came back to China and joined Tsinghua University again. For the next 20 years,
he worked hard to train talents, promote international academic exchanges, and make
China's basic sciences stronger.His work left a long-lasting influence on China's higher
education and scientific research.
24.What made Yang Chen-Ning the first Chinese Nobel winner?
A.Developing the Yang-Mills theory with Robert Mills
B.Putting forward a ground-breaking theory in physics

Chinese researchers have developed a 3D hand-shaped microrobot measuring about 40
micrometers, smaller than the diameter of a human hair,to achieve precise movements such
as the grasping, delivering and releasing of particles or cells, according to a research article
published in the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing.
Microrobots play an essential role in early medical checks and accurate treatment,
given increasing demands for better control over tools in bio-medicine and
micromanipulation.Microrobots can do this well,so they help doctors find patients'health
problems earlier and provide treatments that fit each patient.
However, the research says most microrobots have a problem,in which they are
currently made of a single material system, with their production process focused on a
driving module as the main structure. This makes it hard for one microrobot to combine
various functions, which are necessary for completing complex jobs.
To fix this, researchers from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)created this hand-shaped microrobot. As CAS
explained, when using the robot, researchers first put it in a liquid. When the surrounding
pH value changes, the microrobot's "palm"unfolds or folds like flower petals-just like
your hand pulls back automatically when touching hot water.Guided by a magnetic field,
this microrobot can avoid obstacles and target particles or cells. When the liquid turns acidic
(酸性的),its"palm"shuts to hold the target tightly. Then the robot turns and adjusts its
direction to take the target to the right place. When the liquid becomes alkaline(碱性的),
the "palm"opens again to release the particles or cells.
Researchers say this robot may soon be used to control cells, carry drugs for accurate
treatment, and even help protect the environment.
28.What can we learn about the 3D hand-shaped microrobot?
A.It has a wide range of applications in industry.
B.It has a diameter equal to that of a human hair.
C.It can perform precise actions like grabbing cells.
D.It was first reported in a Chinese scientific journal.

29.Why can't most current microrobots finish complex tasks?
A.They are made of some complex materials.
B.They can't work in the liquid environments.
C.Their production process overemphasizes the driving module.
D.Their single-material design limits them to a single function.
30.What can we infer about the "palm"of the microrobot?
A.Its movement is related to the liquid's pH.
B.It has the same softness as a human hand.
C.It can only function properly in acidic liquid
D.It requires a magnetic field to open and close fully.
31.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A.The History of Microrobot Research in China
B.Differences Between Old and New Microrobots
C.A New Microrobot for Medical and Environmental Uses
D.A New Hand-Shaped Microrobot by Chinese Researchers

From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual ants-
unlike cars-can avoid the stop-and-go traffic. On a driveway with 15 vehicles per mile,
one driver tapping their brakes can cause a persistent traffic jam.Researchers are now
studying these insects'cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that
don't jam up.
Previous research had shown that ants can maintain their flow even at high densities.
So what's their secret? In a recent study published in Transportation Research, researchers
recorded ants on trails and used traffic-engineering models to analyze their movement. They
found that the ants don't jam because they travel in groups of 3 to 20 that move at nearly
constant rates while keeping good distances between one another and they don't speed up to
pass others.
Human drivers at rush hour hardly tend to follow such rules."We're maximizing the
interests of individuals.That is why,at a given point,you start to have a traffic jam,"says
study co-author Nicola Pugno. In his vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would avoid
traffic jams by prioritizing constant speeds and headways or by not passing others on the
road.
Like ants on a trail, which use scent()to control behavior while interacting with
one another, the autonomous vehicle network would help cars keep constant speeds while
collecting and sharing information."There is no leader,"but this organization emerges
anyway, says Noa Pinter-Wollman.And in both ant and vehicle traffic, this type of
distributed system can be very strong and changeable.
Still, ants can do a lot of things that cars can't,the researcher points out.Ants can make

trails as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways.Plus, unlike cars, ants don't
crash;they can literally walk over one another.Today's drivers can learn at least one thing
from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam:by leaving room between their car and the one
ahead of them, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would
otherwise give rise to a traffic jam with no obvious cause.
32.What's a key factor helping ants maintain their flow at high densities?
A.Following a clear leader
B.Waiting in queues patiently
C.Moving at a constant speed
D.Switching trails when crowded
33.Which of the following matches Nicola Pugno's opinion?
A.Autonomous vehicles may be designed to improve traffic situation.
B.Human drivers often break the traffic rules during rush hours.
C.Human drivers will drive more slowly than autonomous vehicles.
D.Prioritizing interests can definitely lead to inefficient traffic flow.
34.What can we know about the autonomous vehicle network?
A.It can help vehicles collect and share information.
B.It can use scent to communicate with vehicles.
C.It can offer drivers flexible route choices.
D.It can form a solid and flexible traffic system.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How ants deal with traffic jams they encounter.
B.How ants may save you from future traffic jams.
C.What benefits we can get from autonomous vehicles.
D.Why we should keep good distances while driving.

Sometimes, you are not good at some of your subjects.Maybe you are an average
student.
36However,anyone can become a better student if you want to.Here's
how:
Plan your time carefully. When you plan your work, you should make a list of things
that you have to do.After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time.First,
your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc.,then decide a good, regular time for studying.
37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize
what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.38 Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply
a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,or
television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
