There are always worries along the journey of growth; What matters is to learn how to solve them. Let’s see how Andy asks David, a youth worker, for help, and what advice he gives.
Dear David,
I’m new to the school, and I don’t see any familiar faces. I’m not good at building relationships. When I see others playing or studying together, I always feel lost — It even feels like the whole class has left me out. What should I do?
Andy
Hi Andy,
I understand how you feel. I also found it hard to make friends at school and spent much of my school life feeling lonely. This was often because I was very shy and a little scared to talk to people. But over time, things got better.
Sometimes, you may need to make the first move. Start small by smiling and saying hello to your classmates. Join clubs or activities that interest you. This is a great way to meet people who share your hobbies. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help with schoolwork; it’s a natural way to start a conversation.
Remember, many people feel the same way you do, even if you don’t show it. Be patient with yourself. Building friendships takes time, and it’s OK to feel nervous. Keep being open and friendly, and you’ll soon find your place. You’re not alone in this — things will get better.
David

Paper making is widely known as one of the four great inventions of ancient Chinese civilization. Among different kinds of papers, Xuan paper, also known as rice paper, holds an important place. Many ancient documents and artworks might not have existed till today if not for the paper.
has always been valued by every Chinese generation as a source of pride since it is not only a necessary part of Chinese culture, but also a witness (见证) to Chinese history for thousands of years.
Xuan paper, as one of the most important carries of Chinese culture, has been given the name “King of All Paper”, because a large number of great works by ancient Chinese calligraphers (书法家) and painters were drawn on Xuan paper. “Five Oxen” by the painter Han Huang is the oldest Chinese painting on Xuan paper. The art piece, passed down by several emperors and officials in ancient China, is more than 1,200 years old.
According to the National Library of China, there are about 30 million ancient paper books in the library, and most of them were made of Xuan paper.
So why did Xuan paper become such a favourite of writers and artists? The answer might lie in its origin (起源). An often-told story about the origin of Xuan paper says that Kong Dan, a paper-making worker during the Eastern Han Dynasty, searched for a kind of paper that would not discover or grow model (发霉) to keep the picture of his teacher Cai Lun, the inventor of paper making, and eventually created Xuan paper.
With a smooth surface, pure texture and high tennis (拉力的) strength, Xuan paper can be kept for a long time. If it is preserved well, its longevity can reach more than 2,000 years while ink and color on it remain fresh and bright. The paper, therefore, is named “Paper of Ages”.

Once upon a time, a mouse, a bird, and a sausage set up house together. The bird’s duty was to fly into the wood for fuel every day; the mouse got the water, and the sausage saw to the cooking.
One day, the bird met a fellow bird. He talked about his excellent household arrangements. But the fellow bird laughed at him for being a fool — he did all the band work, while the other two stayed at home. He said, “After the mouse made the fire and carried the water, she could rest until it was time to set the table. The sausage had only to stay by the pot watching the food cook and added some salt at mealtime.” The bird brought his wood home, saying nothing.
Next morning, influenced by the fellow bird, the bird refused to bring in the wood, telling the others that he had been a fool and it was time to change their work. The mouse and the sausage begged, but it was of no use.
And now what happened? The sausage started in search of wood, the bird made the fire and carried water, and the mouse prepared the pot, and then these two waited till the sausage returned with the fuel for the following day. But the sausage remained so long away, that they became worried, and the bird flew out to find him. However, when he flew just a short distance, he came across a dog who met the sausage and ate him. Then the bird picked up the wood and flew sadly home, and told the mouse what happened. They were both unhappy, but agreed to make the best of things and stay together.
So now the bird set the table, while the mouse prepared the food. When cooking time came, the mouse jumped into the pot; but before reaching the middle, her skin and hair were burnt, and she died. When the bird came in, he could nowhere see the mouse. In a hurry, he threw the wood here and there. Then some of the wood caught fire and began to blaze. The bird went to get some water, but his pail fell into the well, carrying him with it. He was unable to save himself and was drowned.

Laughter is a common language for humans to connect with each other. Even as babies, we laugh when our parents make funny faces, and then learn to make others laugh as we grow up. But is laughter only for humans? Scientists have studied behaviors in animals and found that animals sometimes do things that are funny.
Have you ever seen a dog let people come close to its toy, and then playfully run away with it? Scientists see this as the dog’s way of playing a joke. They also notice dogs play with each other by walking slowly towards each other and then quickly running away. They believe dogs just want to have fun, and maybe feel less stressed in that way.
In a study, researchers studied the behaviors of four kinds of apes (猿类). They saw young apes move quietly behind an adult one and surprise it. Then the young apes waited to see the adult’s reaction. This is similar to how human kids play. So, a sense of humor may have appeared early in our evolution (进化).
What about the sound of laughter? Dogs sometimes make a funny noise that sounds like laughter. Dolphins make happy sounds when they’re playing. Even mice can make similar sounds.
But does this mean animals are really laughing or that they have a sense of humor? Are they just trying to get attention? “In humans, humor can help break the ice, make us feel more comfortable with each other, and make our friendships stronger,” one of the researchers said. “We don’t know if it’s the same in apes or other animals, but it’s possible.”
1. Do scientists think a dog’s behavior of letting people get close to its toy and then playfully running away is a joke?
___________________________________________________________
2. What do young apes wait to see after surprising an adult ape?
___________________________________________________________
3. Do you think humor plays an important role in humans’ relationships? Why or why not?

David

七、阅读与表达。
___________________________________________________________
【答案】1. Yes. 2. They waited to see the adult’s reaction. 3. Yes. Because humor can help break the ice, make us feel more comfortable with each other, and make our friendships stronger.
