B Gutiérrez's life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago.It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing abandoned books. It aroused his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning.Eventually, he turned his book collection into community library for children from lowincome families. Colombia's capital city of Bogotá has 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is nonexistent for families struggling to make ends meet.Gutiérrez's community library is a true representation of how one man's garbage can be another's treasure. Gutiérrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school.Nevertheless, his mother was a passionate reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutiérrez. Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of his home in southern Bogotá, and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and nonfiction titles.Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books! As the word began to spread about his amazing project, people began sending him many more books to grow his library. Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day.He continues to search through garbage cans for reading materials.Today, the Gutiérrez family does not merely want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading. Gutiérrez's journey to give back to his local community is an amazing example of how every one of us can improve the lives of those around us.How might we take a leaf out of Gutiérrez's book and impact the less fortunate around us? 4.What inspired Gutiérrez to rescue unwanted books?( ) A.The abandoned Anna Karenina. B.Leo Tolstoy's life. C.Children's living conditions. D.A community library. 5.Why did Gutiérrez start “The Strength of Words”?( ) A.To create a harmonious neighbourhood. B.To give his mother sufficient books. C.To facilitate children's reading. D.To improve the community life. 6.What can best describe Gutiérrez?( ) A.Devoted and talented. B.Intelligent and generous. C.Passionate and welleducated. D.Creative and caring. 7.What would be the best title for the text?( ) A.Desire for Reading B.From Garbage to Treasure C.Gutiérrez's Kindness D.An Amazing Model of Education C A new study suggests classic paintings by wellknown artists Joseph Mallord William Turner and Claude Monet may have been influenced by air pollution during the Industrial Revolution. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by authors from Harvard University and Sorbonne University, analyzed 60 oil paintings by Turner from 1796 to 1850 and 38 paintings by Monet from 1864 to 1901. Scientists don't know exactly how polluted the cities were during that time for lack of data. However, researchers say examining the works of Turner and Monet can give a picture of longterm environmental change with the air pollution. In particular, researchers say changes in local sulfur dioxide(二氧化硫) emissions from burning coal may explain changes in the colour contrast and intensity of Turner's, Monet's, and others' works, even after taking the artistic trends and subject matter of the time into account. Scientists successfully measured painters' representation of nature, focusing on differences in local weather patterns which influenced colour in works painted in different parts of Europe.Paintings done in Britain generally feature a paler blue sky than other works in other parts of the continent.Generally, artists can historically accurately represent their environment, so Turner and Monet were chosen because they are famous for their landscape and cityscape paintings and also because they were active during the Industrial Revolution, when air pollution grew at a rate never seen before. Additionally, researchers say that as the air in London and Paris became more polluted, the cities would appear hazier to the eyes as well as in photographs.By comparing the paintings of Turner and Monet to pictures from the era, they were able to determine the artists were at least partly influenced by the change in emissions. 8.How did the researchers conduct the study?( ) A.By referring to relevant historical records. B.By comparing the paintings of Turner and Monet. C.By relating the paintings to the air conditions then. D.By analyzing the data during the Industrial Revolution. 9.What did the researchers find in the works of Turner and Monet?( ) A.Air pollution at that time. B.Change in subject matter. C.Social trends of the period. D.Development of photography. 10.What can we learn from Paragraph 5?( ) A.European artists preferred landscape paintings. B.Scientists focused on studying weather patterns. C.Turner and Monet intended to present pollution. D.Britain suffered from air pollution most in Europe. 11.What is the purpose of the text?( ) A.To inform people of a new discovery. B.To instruct people to appreciate paintings. C.To introduce the Industrial Revolution. D.To call on people to protect the environment. D Many owners of electric cars have wished for a battery pack that could power their vehicle for more than a thousand miles on a single charge.Researchers have developed a lithiumair battery that could make that dream a reality. The new battery design could also one day power airplanes and trucks. The main new component in this lithiumair battery is a solid electrolyte (电解质) instead of the usual liquid variety. Batteries with solid electrolytes are not subject to safety problems with the liquid electrolytes used in lithiumion and other battery types, which can overheat and catch fire.More importantly, the solid electrolyte can potentially boost the energy four times, which translates into longer driving range. For over a decade, scientists have been working overtime to develop a lithium (锂) battery that makes use of the oxygen in air.The lithiumair battery has the highest energy of any battery technology being considered for the next generation of batteries beyond lithiumion. The new solid electrolyte is composed of a material made from relatively inexpensive elements, compared with the past designs.Besides, the chemical reaction in lithiumion only involves one or two electrons stored per oxygen molecule (分子),while that for the lithiumair battery involves four electrons.More electrons stored means higher energy. The new design is the first lithiumair battery that has achieved a fourelectron reaction at room temperature. It also operates with oxygen supplied by air from the surrounding environment. The capability to run with air avoids the need for oxygen tanks to operate, a problem with earlier designs. “With further development, we expect our new design for the lithiumair battery to reach a record of 1,200 watthours per kilogram,” said Curtiss, a researcher.“That is nearly four times better than lithiumion batteries.” 12.What contributes most to the lithiumair battery?( ) A.Lithiumion. B.Oxygen molecules. C.Solid electrolytes. D.Liquid components. 13.What's the problem with lithiumion batteries?( ) A.They burn easily if overheated. B.They are unsafe in production. C.They damage the environment. D.They require longer charging time. 14.How does the author organize Paragraph 4?( ) A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons. C.By presenting statistics. D.By analyzing cause and effect. 15.What is the best title of the text?( ) A.How Lithiumair Batteries Work B.What Will Be Used to Power Airplanes C.Electric Cars Are Becoming More Popular D.New Batteries Offer Longer Driving Range Science fiction television has done a lot to shape how we view the meals of the future, from an evening dinner in pill form to machines giving us any meal we desire on demand.16(____)However,while these ideas for food creation are more than fifty years old,the way we produce and consume food has not changed very much.Even though there is enough food available today to feed the world, more than 870 million people do not have enough to eat.17(____) With the global population expected to grow to more than nine billion by 2050,demand for food will only increase. No pills or machines have solved our food problems yet. However, agricultural science has been responsible for saving huge numbers of lives.Science and technology helped us out of starvation during the 1960s and 1970s when the world's population exploded.18(____)The result of this panic was the “green revolution”, which saw the introduction to farming of high production grains, improved irrigation systems and hybrid seeds, saving over one billion people from starvation. 19(____)Having enough food is only the first step. There are complications with natural disasters, conflict, poverty and environmental problems. All these can mean that the food supply is put at risk.20(____)Many people are concerned about “playing around with nature”, adjusting how food looks and tastes and smells, and other human interference(干预),all of which are widespread. Anyhow, the world has not been completely saved from starvation, but we are on the way to getting there. A.Agricultural science was quite a success. B.There are many complexities when dealing with food. C.Modern science and technology of food contributes a lot. D.Nobody would ever starve if food were this easy to obtain. E.And it is unbelievable that hunger kills more people than disease does. F.Then there are the issues we face when it comes to food experimentation. One day after school, Amanda and Rama were chatting and Rama mentioned how much she missed her friends and hometown.“It is hard to leave,”Rama sighed,“but my family needed to be in places where it is easier for us to make a living.”Holding Rama's hands, Amanda encouraged her to share more and she knew Rama loved to sing and dance with her friends back in her hometown. After learning about Rama's story, Amanda started to notice more students like Rama in her school. For the first time she realized that those students looked sad in their eyes.Sometimes because of their different accents, they couldn't communicate well with others, which made them always sit or stand silently at the back of the classroom. “They are having a hard time.We should show them kindness and love!”she told her mother one day.Amanda asked her mother what she could do to help make them feel welcome.Amanda's mother suggested, “What about using art?Maybe it will be easier to communicate through art.”Amanda thought for a while and nodded.Like her friend Rama, Amanda loved all forms of art, like painting, singing, dancing, and performing, through which she could tell different stories—about her family and her life. The next day, Amanda went to the Activity Center in her school and proposed her plan of an art show. The officer thought it was a great idea.Inspired and excited, Amanda set about her plan with several friends. At the Activity Center they filled a room with paper, paint and pencils. They even made a small stage!Everything ready, they invited all the new students in her school and Amanda encouraged them to share something special about their hometown in any art forms. To Amanda's surprise, no one responded. Amazingly, Rama stepped forward to break the ice. 35. relax“放松”;escape“逃跑,逃避,摆脱”;imagine“想象”。 37.解析:in。 38.解析:to offer。 本句中,something 是to offer的动作承受者,It是offer的逻辑主语,即动作执行者,故填to offer。 39.解析:if。 40.解析:well。 as well as 连接并列的两个部分:busy beach destinations和quieter and more familycentered ones。as well as“和,也”。 41.解析:than。 此处为“There is no better...than...” 43.解析:are drawn。 One possible version Dear campers, Two weeks has passed since we started the English summer camp in our school and I never thought it would finish so soon. This is a wonderful camp and everyone including all the teachers and students has done their best to fulfill the tasks.Congratulations on your success and your outstanding teaching and performances will be remembered forever. Please accept my heartfelt thanks, and I hope we will meet again in the nearest future. Here I wish everyone a pleasant journey home, and good luck to you and your family. Thank you very much! One possible version Amazingly, Rama stepped forward to break the ice.She stepped onto the stage and said in an emotional voice, “I used to sing old songs from my hometown and now I would like to share with you my favorite piece.”With that, her sweet voice filled the Activity Center, transporting everyone back to their lovely hometown. With her sweet singing ending in a big round of applause, the atmosphere changed from an awkward silence to an outburst of activities. Some students painted symbolic buildings in their hometown;others danced their merry samba back home.Still, others performed the most classic episode in their local opera. Everything seemed to change after that art show.Gone was the sadness in students' eyes.Gradually, these sorrowful kids, like Rama, began to open up, make new friends and adapt to their life here. When Amanda shared the children's dramatic transformation with her mother, she won a warm kiss.Indeed, life in a new modern city will be full of thorns and bumps, but love and kindness from human beings like Amanda and her mom will remove all the negativity and inject vitality into these lonely kids' heart.
