The word “invent” comes from a Latin word which means “to find”. Garrett Morgan, an African-American, was such an inventor.
Every day, Morgan watched traffic. Cars, bicycles and walkers all competed to cross the street. Policemen made simple“stop/go”signals (信号) at busy crossings, but cars, bicycles and walkers still rushed into the crossings at different speeds and many crashed (撞) into each other. One day he saw a traffic accident at a busy crossing. He realized that the problem with the traffic light was its poor design: there was no transition between“stop” and “go”.
Morgan invented a new traffic signal that added a caution (警告) light which made traffic move more safely. His traffic light stood on a T-shaped pole (杆) with arms that flashed a red light to stop traffic in all directions, allowing walkers to cross safely. After walkers crossed, traffic could only go in one direction.
Soon, many cities wanted his traffic light. In 1923, a company paid Morgan $40,000 to make and sell his invention. Traffic lights today work in the same way.
The caution light is Morgan’s most famous invention. In 1963, the United States government gave Morgan an award for his life-saving idea.

When I was young, I loved paper cutting and I was pretty good at it. As I grew up, I became busy and didn’t have much time for it. Later, I stopped doing it.
However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong Province was practicing lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team (专业舞狮表演队) passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs for her and quickly she did a lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture brought back my strong memories of paper cutting.

A nap (小睡) is an important part of the afternoon in many countries around the world. In China, people call it wushui. In Italy, it’s a riposo. And the Spanish word is siesta. Could these naps be good for our brains? A new study says they might be.
Three scientists worked on this study and Valentina Paz led the study. She wanted to know if daytime napping could be beneficial (有裨益的) to brain health. “Keeping the brain healthy is important for well-being,” Paz explained.
The scientists examined the brains of thousands of people. They studied their DNA, too. And they found a connection between taking naps and having better brain health.
People with bigger brains are usually healthier and have a lower risk of illness. However, our brains get smaller as we get older. The study showed that people who took naps more often had bigger brains!
An earlier study also showed that naps can help. Scientists compared the results of memory and maths tests from 3,000 people in China. They found that an hour-long nap after lunch helped the people score better.
Paz hopes her research can teach people about the value of sleep. “Sleep plays an important role in keeping the brain healthy. When we do not get enough sleep, we could develop health problems,” she said.

Morgan invented a new traffic signal that added a caution (警告) light, which made traffic move more safely. His traffic light stood on a T-shaped pole (杆) with arms that flashed a red light to stop traffic in all directions, allowing walkers to cross safely. After walkers crossed, traffic could only go in one direction.

I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper-cutting club. Every Monday and Friday, I learned to make paper cuttings there. Our teacher, Ms. Li, was very talented. With a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, she could create lively works (作品). That amazed us. And we learned much from her. Together, we created lots of works. They covered many topics, including animals, flowers and things about Chinese history. Every time we held a paper-cutting show, our works attracted many visitors. The girl in the news encouraged me to go on with paper cutting. I want to be an inheritor (继承者) of the ancient Chinese culture. Together with other inheritors, I hope to pass down our excellent culture.

“Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head. And we here are living in darkness and tragedy (悲剧), and rockets are falling on us, so I thought of creating light, and did so,” Al-Attar said to the reporter.
The Al-Attar family has connected their tent to the side of a house, allowing the boy to climb onto the roof and set up his two fans to charge batteries (给电池充电).
