“When I was young, I had so much energy and I loved building things. If I had an idea, I had to build it right now using what I could find around me,” says Danish artist Thomas Dambo. When Dambo was seven years old, he bought a mountain of cushions (垫子) from a nearby market to build a game room in his parents’ house. As a teenager, he built a “crazy” castle in his backyard.
Years later, 42-year-old Dambo is proudly showing his latest work: a giant (巨人) called Little Lui. Five meters tall, Little Lui is one of the six giants placed in the corners of Peel Region of Western Australia, which will be on show for at least a year. This work makes Dambo’s giants up to 99 around the world. His gentle giants have found homes in many different countries, as far as the United States, Belgium, China, Denmark, South Korea and now in Australia.
“For me, giants represent (代表) the voice of nature,” Dambo says. This deep respect for nature is the focus of Dambo’s building works. Dambo’s giants are made almost from local recycled wood: their faces from second-hand furniture and their hair from tree branches and leaves. Taking about 750 hours to complete, each giant is built out in nature.
“I hope by visiting the giants, people will think of rubbish as a resource. I think it’s really important that next generations are connected to nature,” Dambo says. “That’s why I tried to build the giants to attract young people. I want people to be inspired and to realize they don’t need a lot to create something big and beautiful.”
4. Which of the following can best describe young Dambo?
A. Creative. B. Homesick. C. Powerful. D. Frightened.
5. What can we know about Little Lui?
A. It is kept underground. B. It’s Dambo’s first giant.
C. It will be shown to the public. D. It will be sent to Denmark.
6. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The comments on the giants. B. The appearance of the giants.
C. The basic theme of the giants. D. The expensive materials of the giants.
7. What does Dambo plan to do with his giants?
A. Inspire more people to take adventures.
B. Encourage the young to approach nature.
C. Help people spend less time playing games.
D. Call on the young to save natural resources.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. C 7. B

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources (资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. However, the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’d done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
8. What may the students start worrying about before an exam?
A. Whether they can pass the exams.
B. What other students do during the test.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
9. What is the solution developed by the two researchers?
A. Asking the students to think nothing of the test.
B. Asking the students to focus on the test.
C. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
D. Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
10. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ________.
A. became less nervous before the test.
B. were better at controlling their feelings.
C. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings.
D. did better than those who took two tests.
11. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Writing about worries before an exam can work a bit.
B. Studying in the library can improve students’ performance.
C. Students can only write about worries right before an exam.
D. It doesn’t matter where to write about worries before an exam.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. D

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers (慢跑者) and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate (表明) that people who jog at a proper pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural (结构上的) changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.
Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy (寿命), jogging a few times a week at a proper pace is a good strategy. Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”
The implications (暗示) of this are that moderate (适度的) forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and walking may be better for us than “iron man events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You don’ t actually have to do that much to have a good impact (影响) on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much”.
12. The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. regular B. hard C. practical D. fluent
13. The author presents some figures in Paragraph 2 to ______.
A. suggest giving up jogging B. show risks of doing sports
C. provide supportive evidence D. introduce the research process
14. According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful?
A. It may injure the heart and arteries. B. It can make the body tired out.
C. It will bring much pressure. D. It consumes too much energy.
15. What can be inferred (推断) from the text?
A. No exercise at all is the best choice. B. More exercise means a healthier life.
C. Marathons runners are least likely to die. D. Proper exercise contributes to good health.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,通过丹麦科学家的研究表明,过度剧烈运动与不运动的死亡风险相当,适度且有节奏的运动才更有利于健康。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段中的“If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock (如果你认为跑马拉松会帮助你过上长寿健康的生活,一项新的研究可能会让你大吃一惊)”可知,人们一般认为马拉松会帮助我们过上健康长寿的生活,但新的研究结果不是这样。
根据第二段中的“The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a proper pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die (样本组的死亡率表明,每周以适当速度慢跑两到三次、总时长少于两个半小时的人死亡风险最低)”可知,作者列出“每周两到三次”“少于两个半小时”“每小时5英里”等数据,是为了给研究结论提供有力证据。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural (结构上的) changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). (科学家们认为,这是因为剧烈运动导致心脏和动脉发生结构变化)”可知,过度运动有害是因为它可能损伤心脏和动脉。故选A项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a proper pace is a good strategy (如果你的目标是降低死亡风险并提高预期寿命,每周以适当速度慢跑几次是个不错的策略)”可知,适度的运动有助于身体健康。故选D项。
第二节 七选五(根据短文内容,选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。其中有两项为多余选项。)。
Mobile phone used among school kids has become a problem for the school years. In our country, there are many rules stopping the use of mobile phones at school. ____16____
It is a good rule because it is hard for school kids to resist the temptation (诱惑) of mobile phones. Mobile phone was a distraction (分心事) to students during school hours. ____17____ Sometimes students might use mobile phones to cheat during exams.
____18____ because they can’t get in touch with their children. Many people say that they understand why these parents would want their children to have phones, but all of them think schools should let the students know when they can use their mobile phones. So in lots of schools, if a student needs to bring a phone to school, his or her parents will have to write a statement. ____19____ If the student breaks the rule and uses his or her phone during class, the student will be warned.
This is a reasonable rule, isn’t it? Under such a rule, students still have some freedom, and they learn how to improve self-discipline (自律能力) and live with new technologies. ____20____
In my opinion, freedom is based on good rules, so students should obey school rules. As the saying goes, “No any orders without laws and rules.” Students who follow the rules and learn self-discipline can grow up more healthily. So parents should also follow the school miles and look at the advantages of them.
A. And they make sure that the phone is turned off during class
B. Some kids have got mobile phones as birthday presents.
C. One of the rules is students aren’t allowed to bring them to school.
D. Mobile phone has become a problem for middle schools.
E. So rules do not necessarily mean there will be no freedom.
F. However, some parents feel unhappy.
G. It can also be harmful to students’ eyesight.
【答案】16. C 17. G 18. F 19. A 20. E
【解析】

【18题详解】
根据空格后的句子“because they can’t get in touch with their children. (因为他们联系不到自己的孩子。)”可知,F项“However, some parents feel unhappy. (然而,一些家长感到不开心。)”填入空格处,符合语境,与下文构成因果关系。故选F项。
【19题详解】
根据空格前的句子“So in lots of schools, if a student needs to bring a phone to school, his or her parents will have to write a statement. (所以在很多学校,如果一个学生需要带手机到学校,他或她的父母将不得不写一份声明。)”和空格后的句子“If the student breaks the rule and uses his or her phone during class, the student will be warned. (如果学生违反规定,在课堂上使用手机,学生将受到警告。)”可知,空格处的句子应该涉及到允许学生在学校带手机的条件,所以,A项“And they make sure that the phone is turned off during class. (他们确保手机在上课时关机。)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选A项。
【20题详解】
根据空格前的句子“Under such a rule, students still have some freedom, and they learn how to improve self-discipline (自律能力) and live with new technologies. (在这样的规定下,学生仍然有一定的自由,他们学会如何提高自律能力,与新技术一起生活。)”可知,空格处的句子应该是说,规则和自由并不矛盾,所以,E项“So rules do not necessarily mean there will be no freedom. (因此,规则并不一定意味着没有自由。)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选E项。

Furthermore, how to follow western table manners is also a good topic for some of us to further study abroad after graduation. It is the proper behavior at meals that can help us to get along well with foreigners. I wonder whether it is convenient for you to share something about them to enrich our mind.
I am looking forward to your splendid lecture and I am willing to help if you expect more information.
Version 2:
It is with great pleasure that I received your email regarding the upcoming lecture on Western culture. In response to your request for topic suggestions, I would like to put forward two specific areas that I believe would deeply attract us students.
First and foremost, an exploration of Western festivals, such as Halloween and Christmas, would be highly appealing. What truly captures our imagination are the profound cultural narratives, unique traditions, and the core values they embody. Equally captivating would be an introduction to the cornerstone of Western literature, namely Greek mythology and Shakespeare’s timeless plays. Not only do they offer thrilling adventures, but they also explore universal themes of love, ambition, and fate, which transcend cultural boundaries and remain relevant to us today.

After the first one they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.

D Mobile phone has become a problem for middle schools.
E. So rules do not necessarily mean there will be no freedom.
F. However, some parents feel unhappy.
G. It can also be harmful to students’ eyesight.
