My hedgehog abandoned (抛弃) her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them because I have to go to school fulltime. Good home with experience needed as soon as possible!” I had no experience with baby hedgehogs. I was an animal person through and through and had raised cats, dogs, birds, and guinea pigs. But this tiny animal was new to me, and it touched me that he was abandoned, that maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him. I wrote the most heartfelt email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way. By the time he reached old age, Louie had only three feet. However, he still managed to climb the stairs to visit other animals. He helped me realize my dream of hedgehog photography, a hobby that began during childhood with cats and dollhouses. I love showing off his modeling. Life has meaning because of the purpose we have. Louie needed a good home and mom, and in return, I got to be a good mother and be needed. Hedgehogs require great amounts of patience, trust, and knowledge—but the payoff (回报) is pretty great. 24. The author got Louie from . He enjoyed being left alone. 27. What does the author say about raising Louie? A. It was easier than expected. B. It was satisfying and meaningful. C. It gave her a sense of safety. D. It made her lose her patience. C In Wiltshire, England, volunteers are being searched for to visit a nature protection area to count the butterflies living there and in nearby fields. The project is started by an environmental protection organization, which has been devoted to improving the living environment for wild animals. Recently, the organization has called on volunteers to help it observe environmental changes based on the record of butterflies and protect the environment. In the nature protection area, the local people have planted many special flowers with the help of the organization. They want to see whether these flowers will interest the rare, and beautiful butterflies. The project officer Sarah Marshall says, “It will be a suitable living place for butterflies. They are great ‘indicator species’ (指向性物种) as they are easily affected by climate changes. So they make a brilliant early-warning system for the environment.” She also points out that volunteers are needed to record the number or species of butterflies, and based on the change happening to the butterflies, the hidden environmental problems in the area can be found out in time. The organization is searching for volunteers to help monitor (监测) butterflies from April through to September. They will walk the same route and record the different butterflies they meet along the way. Each visit should take no more than two hours, and each volunteer is expected to visit once a month to count the wildlife. “Staff will provide backup (后备人员), so if the weather is poor on the day you are visiting (butterflies don’t like to fly in the rain, wind or if it’s too cloudy), we can have someone else do your job,” Sarah points out. No previous experience is necessary as training and support will be provided, but a strong interest is important. If you are interested, please contact Sarah at (01380) 725670, ext 278, or email sarahm@wiltshirewildlife.org. 28. Why are special flowers planted in the nature protection area? A. To attract butterflies. B. To attract visitors. C. To help the local people make money. D. To improve the environment. 29. According to Sarah Marshall, butterflies are ________ A. reducing in number in Wiltshire B. curious about their habitats C. sensitive to environmental changes D. unable to keep up with climate changes 30. According to the text, a volunteer ________. A. will walk a different route each time B. will visit the area 6 times in total C. must know a lot about butterflies D. must have previous experience 31. What is the purpose of the text? A. To persuade people to visit Wiltshire. B. To show a way to explore climate change. C. To encourage people to protect butterflies. D. To advertise for volunteers with a project. D If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning another language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages increases grey matter (大脑灰质), an area of the brain which deals with information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effects are greater, the younger people learn another language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language.” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的)” he said, “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world.” explained the scientists. 32. Why does the writer mention “exercise” and “muscles” in paragraph 2? A. To show that language learning is building grey matter. B. To suggest that language learning involves physical exercise. C. To explain that language learning has something to do with muscle building. D. To prove that learning a language can be harmful to your brain. 33. What can be learnt from the scientific findings? A. The ability to learn a second language is changing all the time. B. The earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is. C. The experience of learning a second language has an unknown effect on people’s brain. D. A later second language learner and one knowing no second language have no difference. 34. What does the author try to tell us in the last two paragraphs? A. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language. B. Learning a second language is the same as studying maths. C. Early learning of a second language helps in studying other subjects. D. It’s better to learn a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. 35. What is the passage mainly about? A. How to learn a second language. B. The relationship between language learning and math study. C. People’s ability to learn a second language. D. How language learning helps brainpower. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Test anxiety is actually a type of performance anxiety, a feeling someone might have in a situation where performance really counts. It makes sense-the better you know the material, the more confident you'll feel. ___39___ When you expect to do well, you' ll be able to relax into a test after the normal first—moment nervousness passes. Be careful of what you're thinking If expecting to do well on a test can help you relax, what about if you expect you won’t do well? Watch out for any negative messages you might be sending yourself about the test. ___40___ If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts ( “I’m not good at taking tests” or “It's going to be terrible if I do badly on this test ”), replace them with positive messages. Not unrealistic positive messages, of course, but ones that are practical and true, such as “I’ve studied hard and I know the material, so I'm ready to do the best I can.” A. They can increase your anxiety. B. Let stress remind you to study well in advance of a test. C. Having confidence going into a test means you expect to do well. D. The sports meeting aimed to encourage students to exercise and foster a spirit of competition and cooperation. It featured a variety of events, including track-and-field races like the 100-meter dash and long-distance running, as well as field events such as long jump and shot-put. Participating in it, I not only enhanced my physical fitness but also learned the importance of perseverance and teamwork. It was a great experience that brought us closer together. Looking forward to hearing from you! Yours, Li Hua 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
