The history of printing is a remarkable story of human progress. Before printing was invented, books were copied by hand. This was a slow and expensive process, so only a few people could afford to own books.
Bi Sheng, a commoner in the Song Dynasty, invented movable type printing around 1040 AD. He made individual characters from clay, which could be reused. This made printing much faster and cheaper.
Movable type printing technology later spread to other countries. By the 13th century, it had reached Korea and Japan.
