I realized that if I wanted to bounce back from the research rejections, I had to find a way to teach. I convinced an adviser to sign off on independent study projects for a group of students, and I started meeting with them weekly to teach my own little class. The conversations with the students gave rise to my first two major papers, which gave me a head start toward tenure. 1. What does the author advise us to do when facing rejection? A. The cafe was always busy, especially during morning rush hours, and my main job was to make coffee and hand out pastries. I was nervous at first — my hands would shake when I poured milk, and I once mixed up a customer’s order of a latte and a cappuccino. One rainy Tuesday morning, an elderly man came in. He wore a worn raincoat and his hair was slightly wet. He ordered a black coffee and a blueberry muffin, then sat by the window, staring at the rain. I handed him his order, and he smiled softly. “This feels like home,” he said quietly. I didn’t know what to say, so I just smiled back. After that, the man came every Tuesday at the same time. He always ordered the same thing, and we’d exchange a few words — about the weather, the taste of the muffin, or his old garden. One week, he didn’t show up. I felt a little worried, but told myself he might just be busy. The next Tuesday, he still didn’t come. I started to wonder if something had happened. Three weeks later, a woman walked into the cafe. She held an envelope and asked for me. “I’m Mr. Henderson’s daughter,” she said. “My dad passed away last week. He told me this cafe was his favorite place, and that you always made him feel welcome. He wanted me to give you this.” Inside the envelope was a handwritten note: “Thank you for making my Tuesdays brighter. You made a lonely old man’s days feel warm.” There was also a small photo of Mr. Henderson in his garden, smiling. I kept that note and photo. My manager at the time gave me a funny look and warned me against going there. I didn’t panic. I’d done my research. Mongolia wasn’t as dangerous as people thought — in fact, it’s far safer than a lot of more frequented countries, like South America. The thing about Mongolia is… no one has been there. I don’t know a single other person in my life who has been there. Except for the friends I made while I was there. That’s the thing about solo travel — you don’t technically have to do it alone. Since Mongolia held some risks to it and is considered one of the most remote regions in the world, I decided to join a small-group tour. I admit I was a little nervous. Looking up past trips on this company’s website, it looked like it was a whole bunch of couples that frequented these tours. I started picturing six couples, enjoying a Mongolian sunset… and then little old me. Just off to the side, enjoying it on my own. When I arrived in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, and met the rest of the tour, I was both surprised and thrilled to realise that, of the ten people on tour, there was only one pair. Everybody else was there on their own. And instead of sitting off to the side like I’d feared, I’d been tent-paired with a lovely young American girl called Annie. On what other occasions might I have met her if not for this solo trip? The decision to travel solo, to not let the fact that I didn’t have a travel companion stop me, was what brought us together. And that’s the beauty of travelling solo. When I’m alone, I’m more likely to branch out and talk to the locals and strangers, even if there’s a language barrier. And, in my experience, most people are good people. Start up a conversation, ask questions, and be curious. Most importantly: don’t be a tourist. Be a traveller. 1.What does the author say about Mongolia? A.It is hardly accessible. B.It is suitable for solo travel. C.It is a popular destination. D.It is safer than people think. 2.Why was the author nervous about the small-group tour? A.She feared being left out. B.She feared being too old to bond. C.She was unsure of the risks ahead. D.She was unfamiliar with such tours. 3.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Annie? A.To illustrate a benefit of solo travel. B.To show the friendliness of the small-group. C.To stress the growing popularity of solo travel. D.To explain the importance of cooperation in travel. 4.According to the author, what is most attractive about solo travel? A.The thrill of self-discovery. B.The freedom of being alone. C.The authentic engagement with others. D.The improvement of conversation skills. 【答案】1.D 2.A 3.A 4.C 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中的“Mongolia wasn’t as dangerous as people thought — in fact, it’s far safer than a lot of more frequented countries, like South America.(蒙古并不像人们想象的那么危险 —— 事实上,它比许多更热门的国家,比如南美洲,要安全得多)”可知,作者认为蒙古比人们想象的更安全。故选D项。 2. 根据第四段中的“I started picturing six couples, enjoying a Mongolian sunset… and then little old me. Just off to the side, enjoying it on my own.(我开始想象有六对情侣在欣赏蒙古的日落,……然后是小小的、不起眼的我,只能站在一旁,独自欣赏)”可知,作者担心小团体旅行中都是情侣,自己会被孤立。故选A项。 3. 根据第五段中的“The decision to travel solo, to not let the fact that I didn’t have a travel companion stop me, was what brought us together.(独自旅行的决定,不让没有旅伴这个事实阻止我,正是这个决定让我们走到了一起)”及第六段开头“And that’s the beauty of travelling solo.(这就是独自旅行的美妙之处)”可知,作者提到Annie是为了说明独自旅行能带来结交新朋友的好处。故选A项。 4. 根据第六段中的“When I’m alone, I’m more likely to branch out and talk to the locals and strangers, even if there’s a language barrier.(当我独自一人时,我更愿意主动与人交流,和当地人和陌生人聊天,即使存在语言障碍)”可知,作者认为独自旅行最吸引人的地方是能与他人进行真实的互动。故选C项。 Passage 2 When I shopped for a new car seven years ago, my focus was on style, size, and color. This time, I found I had to learn such new terms as range anxiety and one pedal driving because, for the first time, I was in the market for an electric vehicle(EV). When I asked the dealer how long the battery could last, he assured me that range anxiety was not a big problem now. “More than 50 EV models today go more than 500km per charge, with some topping 800. Plus, the number of public charging stations has doubled in the past five years. 64 percent of Americans live within two miles of one,” he explained. The dealer added that EVs also used their energy much more efficiently than gas cars, with some 90 percent of their power moving the car, compared to 25 percent for conventional vehicles. “The loss of energy in the form of heat is why you could fry eggs on the engine!” he said. “In addition, gas cars also have many more parts, making upkeep and repairs about 40 percent more costly per mile driven. With no oil to change, EVs also require little routine maintenance.” There was still a lot to learn. But when I got behind the wheel, I thought the dealer should have marketed drivability to me first. I was glad to find that I could put my foot on the brake (制动器) less frequently. Depending on the setting selected, the car could often be stopped without touching the brake. I was especially pleased that the ride was amazingly smooth and that the car could go from zero to 100km/h astonishingly fast! “That smooth ride is partially due to the battery on the bottom that allows the car to better hug the road,” the dealer explained. “And since the battery provides immediate power to the car, EVs speed up much faster.” 5.What was the dealer doing in paragraph 2? A.Explaining a new term to readers. B.Trying to reduce the author’s range anxiety. C.Introducing EV models to the author. D.Showing the latest developments in the US. 6.Why are gas cars less efficient than EVs? A.They run too fast, B.They have more functions. C.They are very heavy. D.They produce a lot of heat. 7.What did the author like most about EVs? A.The comfort and ease of use. B.Their environmental impact. C.The low costs of maintenance. D.Their much simpler structures. 8.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A.To persuade readers to buy EVs. B.To stress EVs’ advantages. C.To share his shopping experience. D.To compare two types of cars. 根据第二段“When I asked the dealer how long the battery could last, he assured me that range anxiety was not a big problem now.(当我询问经销商电池的续航时间时,他向我保证,现在续航焦虑已经不那么严重了)”可知,经销商试图缓解作者的焦虑情绪。故选B。 6. 根据第三段“The loss of energy in the form of heat is why you could fry eggs on the engine!(这种以热能形式散失的能量,就是为什么能在发动机上煎鸡蛋的原因!)” 根据第四段“But when I got behind the wheel, I thought the dealer should have marketed drivability to me first. I was glad to find that I could put my foot on the brake (制动器) less frequently. Depending on the setting selected, the car could often be stopped without touching the brake. I was especially pleased that the ride was amazingly smooth and that the car could go from zero to 100km/h astonishingly fast!(但当我坐进驾驶座时,我觉得经销商本应该先向我介绍车辆的驾驶性能。我很高兴发现我几乎不用频繁踩刹车了。根据所选的设置,车辆通常无需踩刹车就能停住。我尤其感到惊喜的是,行驶起来异常平稳,而且车辆从零加速到100公里/小时的速度变化惊人地快!)”可知,最能打动作者的是电动汽车的舒适性和驾驶简单。故选A。 8. 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“This time, I found I had to learn such new terms as range anxiety and one pedal driving because, for the first time, I was in the market for an electric vehicle(EV).(这一次,我发现自己得去学习一些新的术语,比如“续航焦虑”和“单踏板驾驶”了,因为这是我第一次考虑购买电动汽车(EV))”可知,作者写本文的目的是分享他购买电动汽车的经历。故选C。 Passage 3 In 2021, my 68-year-old mother was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病). By January 2023, she’d lost her ability to complete everyday tasks. She was set on staying in her home and resisted the in-home care. I guessed it was because of what it represented: the acceptance of a disease that would slowly rob her of her memories and the ability to take care of herself. We had to make the hard choice of finding her a nursing home for her safety and well-being. But we knew she wouldn’t be interested. So, we made up an excuse, telling her that it was an opportunity to spend the winter near my brother in sunny Florida while living at an apartment we had arranged for her. My mum wasn’t the soft, affectionate mother I often longed for. She had never shown or talked about her feelings, but she was a great example of a hard-working, independent, entrepreneurial woman. My brother and I both have our own businesses, which is something she showed us was possible. Since her diagnosis, watching her battle with accepting what was happening to her was heartbreaking, but I also felt closer to her when she began to express and share her feelings with me like a kid. My brother arrived to meet us and we were shown to her apartment. A small kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and two bedrooms — one for her, and one for me and my brother to stay in when we visited. She seemed happy during moving in. For the next 10 days, I lived with her there. We went to meals together, reviewed the activity schedule, and I dropped her off and picked her up like a child at school. The day came when I had to fly home, and I cried. As I shifted from being her daughter to being more like her parent, I realized how hard being a mother can be. 9.Why might the author’s mother resist in-home care? A.She preferred living alone. B.She disliked the caregivers. C.She feared losing independence. D.She intended to move to Florida. 10.How did the author and her brother convince their mother to move to the nursing home? A.They told her a white lie. B.They threatened her to go. C.They offered her a free apartment. D.They agreed to keep her company. 11.What kind of person was the author’s mother before the diagnosis? A.Talkative and determined. B.Reserved but responsible. C.Energetic and gentle. D.Creative but cold. 12.How does the author feel after her role change? A.Confused. B.Content. C.Awkward. D.Appreciative. 根据第一段中“She was set on staying in her home and resisted the in-home care. I guessed it was because of what it represented: the acceptance of a disease that would slowly rob her of her memories and the ability to take care of herself.(她执意要留在自己家中,拒绝居家护理服务。我猜想,这是因为居家护理对她而言意味着接受一种会慢慢剥夺她记忆和自理能力的疾病。)”可知,作者母亲拒绝居家护理是因为她害怕失去独立生活的能力。故选C。 10.细节理解题。根据第二段中“So, we made up an excuse, telling her that it was an opportunity to spend the winter near my brother in sunny Florida while living at an apartment we had arranged for her.(所以,我们编了个借口,告诉她这是一个机会,可以在阳光明媚的佛罗里达州我哥哥附近过冬,同时住在我们为她安排的公寓里。)” 故选A。 11. 根据第三段中“My mum wasn’t the soft, affectionate mother I often longed for. She had never shown or talked about her feelings, but she was a great example of a hard-working, independent, entrepreneurial woman.(我妈妈不是我经常渴望的那种温柔、深情的母亲。她从未表现或谈论过自己的感受,但她是一个勤劳、独立、有创业精神的女性的典范。)”可推知,作者的母亲在确诊前是一个内敛但有责任心的人。故选B。 12.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“As I shifted from being her daughter to being more like her parent, I realized how hard being a mother can be.(当我从她的女儿转变为更像她的父母时,我意识到做母亲有多难。)” D。 Passage 4 “I am not crazy,” says Dr. William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a rabbit. “I am ahead of my time.” If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing “ holistic” medicine — combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine. Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets. Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment. Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says. “I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.” 13.What do some of Farber’s coworkers think of him? A.He’s odd. B.He’s strict. C.He’s brave. D.He’s rude. 14.Why did Farber decide to try acupuncture on pets? A.He was trained in it at university. B.He was inspired by another veterinarian. C.He benefited from it as a patient. D.He wanted to save money for pet owners. 15.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.Steps of a chiropractic treatment. B.The complexity of veterinarians’ work. C.Examples of rare animal diseases. D.The effectiveness of holistic medicine. 16.Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association? A.To prove Farber’s point. B.To emphasize its importance. C.To praise veterinarians. D.To advocate animal protection. 【答案】13.A 14.C 15.D 16.A 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段“If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods.(如果他显得有点戒备,那可能是因为就连他的一些同事偶尔也会嘲笑他那些与众不同的做法)”可知,Farber的同事们有时会嘲笑他不寻常的方法,认为他很奇怪。故选A。 14. 根据第二段“Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.(然后他尝试了针灸疗法,这是一种古老的中国疗法。令他惊讶的是,经过两到三次治疗后,他的病情有了明显好转。对兽医有效的疗法似乎对他的宠物也同样有效。于是,在研究了相关技术几年之后,他开始向宠物们提供这种疗法)”可知,Farber作为患者从针灸中受益,这促使他决定尝试在宠物上使用针灸。故选C。 15.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.(利·廷达勒的狗查理患有严重的心脏病。查理心脏病发作后,廷达勒本打算让他安乐死,但法伯的治疗让查理的痛苦减轻了许多,于是她得以让查理多活了五个月。普里西拉·杜因报道说,她的马“行动更加自如,骑起来也更加舒适”了,这是因为它接受了脊椎按摩治疗)”可知,本段主要讲述了整体医学疗法的有效性。故选D。 16.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700.(法伯坚信,这种整体治疗的方法会随着时间的推移而越来越受到人们的青睐。而且从过去的情况来看,他或许是对的:自1982年以来,美国整体兽医医疗协会的会员人数已从30人增加到了超过700人)”可知, 法伯认为整体医学疗法会越来越受欢迎,随后作者列举了美国整体兽医协会的会员从30个增加到700多个的例子,因此推断美国整体兽医协会是为证明法伯的观点。故选A。 Passage 5 After years spent running and dieting, Casey Johnston came across a post about weightlifting. “I don’t lift to be attractive. I lift to be strong,” Johnston recalls one devoted powerlifter posting. “Liar,” Johnston thought to herself. “After all, isn’t attractiveness the reason why most people work out?” Johnston wanted to look attractive in college. She tried, at first, just dieting. That didn’t get her all the way to where she thought she should be — weight-wise. Then she started running. She was running more and more and eating less and less, but sort of staying in the same place. She just had the impression that she should always be losing weight. Then she learned that what had happened through all of this weight-loss pursuit was that she had dieted and exercised away all of her lean body mass She thought her muscles were just there waiting to be uncovered if she lost enough weight. It turned out that, actually, if you aren’t protecting your muscles actively, they can go away. While running, Johnston found it punishing, but it was a way to achieve one goal that consumed her: not being fat. She had absorbed the cultural message that the purpose of exercise was to make her as small as possible. Johnston admits that she was first drawn to weightlifting for the same reason. But gradually, she discovered strength training could offer more. She says lifting weights helped repair her disordered eating and allowed her to enjoy food. “When I gave it a chance, with these basic elements, I found it transformative. That work of looking closer and listening to myself is worth the time,” she shares. “Most importantly, it changed my attitude about my own body, from one centered on denial of pleasure to a relationship that now embraces movement, rest and eating equally. My body could feel good, even powerful.” 17.How did Johnston find the post at first? A.Inspiring. B.Ordinary. C.Innovative. D.Unconvincing. 18.What was the outcome of Johnston’s dieting and running in college? A.She became too weak to study. B.She gained more lean body mass. C.She didn’t look the way she had expected. D.She lost more weight than planned. 19.Why did Johnston start to learn to lift weights? A.For weight loss. B.For education. C.For entertainment. D.For cultural exchange. 20.What is the focus of the last paragraph? A.How Johnston became more attractive. B.How weightlifting benefited Johnston. C.How Johnston trained for weightlifting. D.How exercise pressure affected Johnston. 根据第二段“I don’t lift to be attractive. I lift to be strong.(我举重不是为了好看,而是为了强壮。)”以及第三段““Liar,” Johnston thought to herself.  “After all, isn’t attractiveness the reason why most people work out?”(“骗子,”约翰斯顿心里想,“毕竟,吸引力难道不是大多数人锻炼的原因吗?”)” 根据第四段中的“Johnston wanted to look attractive in college. She tried, at first, just dieting. That didn’t get her all the way to where she thought she should be — weight-wise. Then she started running. She was running more and more and eating less and less, but sort of staying in the same place.(约翰斯顿在大学时想让自己看起来有吸引力。起初她只尝试节食,但体重方面并没有达到她认为应该达到的状态。然后她开始跑步,跑得越来越多、吃得越来越少,却似乎一直停在原地。)” 可知,Johnston大学时节食和跑步的结果是,她并没有变成自己预期的样子。故选C。 19.细节理解题。根据第七段中的“Johnston admits that she was first drawn to weightlifting for the same reason.(约翰斯顿承认,她最初被举重吸引也是出于同样的原因。)” 故选A。 20. 根据最后一段“She says lifting weights helped repair her disordered eating and allowed her to enjoy food. ‘When I gave it a chance, with these basic elements, I found it transformative. That work of looking closer and listening to myself is worth the time,’ she shares. ‘Most importantly, it changed my attitude about my own body, from one centered on denial of pleasure to a relationship that now embraces movement, rest and eating equally. My body could feel good, even powerful.’(她说举重有助于修复她不健康的饮食习惯,让她享受食物。 快速扫读,圈画六要素标志词:人物:姓名、身份(a teacher, a student)、关系(friends, family); 起因:because, due to, as a result of, since; 经过:then, next, later, suddenly, eventually; 结果:finally, in the end, as a result, therefore; 2. On a cold winter morning in 2022, 16-year-old Li Ming set off from his village to the city to look for his missing father. Due to a sudden rainstorm, the bus was delayed. And being brave, the babies flew up and began their colorful life. In our journey through life, like the baby eagles, we hope to have new, exciting experiences and a meaningful future. Tom looked at him and was surprised to see that the boy had no feet. He looked at his own feet. “It’s much better to be without shoes than without feet.” He thought. There were tall trees, a clear stream, and a big field. We set up our tent and then went for a walk. I saw all kinds of wildflowers and butterflies. It was like a magical place. That night, we sat around the campfire and told stories. My father told us about his childhood, and my mother sang some old songs. I felt so happy and content. I realized that it didn’t matter how much money we had. What mattered was being together as a family. The next day, we went fishing in the stream. I caught my first fish! As she climbed higher, the air became thinner and colder. She could see the beautiful landscape below, with the town looking like a tiny dot. Along the way, she met an old hiker who gave her some advice about the best route to take. Suddenly, a storm started to approach. Dark clouds gathered and strong winds blew. Emma realized she needed to find shelter quickly. She remembered seeing a small cave on the map not too far from where she was. Passage 2 When I shopped for a new car seven years ago, my focus was on style, size, and color. Passage 3 In 2021, my 68-year-old mother was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病). Passage 4 “I am not crazy,” says Dr. Passage 5 After years spent running and dieting, Casey Johnston came across a post about weightlifting.
