Tibetan antelopes live on the plains of Xizang,Xinjiang, and Qinghai.Watching them move slowly across the green grass,I'm struck by their beauty. I'm also reminded of the danger they were in.They were hunted, illegally, for their valuable fur. My guide is Zhaxi,a villager from Changtang. He works at the Changtang National Nature Reserve. The reserve is a shelter for the animals and plants of northwestern Xizang. To Zhaxi, the land is sacred and protecting the wildlife is a way of life.“We're not trying to save the animals,” he says.“Actually,we're trying to save ourselves.” The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope. The population dropped by more than 50 percent.Hunters were shooting antelopes to make profits. Their habitats were becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built. In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains. The measures were effective. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015,the Tibetan antelope was removed from the endangered species list. The government, however, does not intend to stop the protection programmes, since the threats to the Tibetan antelope have not yet disappeared. In the evening,I drink a cup of tea and watch the stars.I think about the antelopes and what Zhaxi told me.Much is being done to protect wildlife, but if we really want to save the planet,we must change our way of life. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet. 1.Why did the author go on a hike? One student,Murphy, suggests a large container filled with water that would heat up and produce steam (蒸汽) to power a car. Although the idea has limitations, climate scientist Ben Kravitz appreciates it,saying that steam power, while old, still works. Kravitz developed a lesson with Paul Goddard,a research scientist, and Kirstin Milks,a high school science teacher. The lesson encourages students to think creatively about reducing pollution and solving global warming. Milks believes it's important for students to not only understand the dangers of climate change but also feel confident to come up with solutions. She says,“These students will lead the future climate work.” The lesson covers the basics of climate change, explaining that burning coal, oil, and gas gives off carbon dioxide (CO2),the main cause of global warming. Kravitz stresses that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the only lasting solution, but new technologies, such as wind and solar energy, are needed to make progress. In the meantime,Kravitz and other scientists are exploring ways, such as climate engineering,to reduce the planet's temperature. Climate engineering includes techniques like reflecting sunlight back into space or removing CO2 from the atmosphere. However, these ways come with risks, such as changing weather systems and rainfall patterns, leading to loss of biodiversity and impacting agriculture.Students are encouraged to think about such challenges when developing their ideas. Through this lesson,Milks hopes to develop in students both awareness and optimism (乐观),showing them that they can play a role in solving global issues. 8.What is Murphy's idea? A photo exhibition attracted a number of students, showing us many animals are becoming endangered species for various reasons like illegal hunting and pollution.More inspiring was a speech contest where participants eagerly talked about how we individuals could make a difference. Then deciding what to do with his garden was way down on the list of necessary tasks. During the first few months,I cried with our family, planned a memorial, celebrated a quiet Thanksgiving, and panicked over not having bought Christmas presents. As the new year began, the often rainy days and long nights deepened my sorrow. I found myself exhausted at the end of February, both physically and mentally. Then the daffodils (水仙花) came out in the garden. Years before,Bruce had planted dozens of these lemon-yellow flowers. To him, they served as a reminder of hope,a promise that light and warmth would soon replace cold and dark. Looking at those daffodils,I thought about how Bruce had considered our garden a living work of art, carefully choosing plants so we'd see new blooms every month. Then I noticed all the weeds that had taken root and spread everywhere. The neglect (疏于打理) showed, for Bruce's illness had lasted a couple of years,a time when he didn't have energy for yard work the way he had before. Faced with the neglected garden,I felt at a loss how to deal with the garden in the beginning. My daughter suggested I hire a person to clean and tidy everything up. I didn't respond. Every time I sat in the garden alone, the memories of the lively garden came flooding, like the numerous scenes in an unforgettable film. I was reminded of so many days when Bruce came home from work, put on old clothes, and headed out of the door to mow or prune Orange dragonflies followed him around the yard as he worked. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers, birds sang beautiful songs, and gentle breezes carried the sweet smell of earth. No matter how cold or wet it was,the fresh air and physical activity made him energized and refreshed. For Bruce, the work was quiet and comforting, which was a relief,as well as a pleasure. “I should look after the garden well on my own,” I though to myself. ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ The garden was so full of vitality (生机) that I expected others to appreciate it with me.________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] “I should look after the garden well on my own,”I though to myself. The days grew warmer and lighter, and I started the work myself. I realized I needed to take care of the garden just like what Bruce had done before. Bruce used to treat the garden as a living work of art. If he were alive,he wouldn't be happy to see the garden in a mess. I started weeding, watering and looking after the daffodils and other flower plants. It seemed like to me that working in the garden was a way to commemorate Bruce. The garden was so full of vitality(生机) that I expected others to appreciate it with me.One day in June,my daughter returned to visit me. She was very surprised at what she saw. Orange dragonflies were flying around the yard. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers and birds sang beautiful songs in the garden. She used to be worried that I would be in a bad mood. But now she realized everything was in good order. Seeing this, she said it looked as if her father were always with us. Dear Mr Frank, ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua [参考范文] Dear Mr Frank, I hope this letter finds you well.I am writing to invite you to participate in the upcoming winter mountain-climbing competition next Sunday. This year we began the trip to the north on a Friday morning. It took us six hours to arrive at our destination. We always stayed at a hotel in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was only a few steps away from the hotel, and our rooms had a beautiful ocean view.We spent our first night playing on the beach. Then,we went back to the hotel rooms and started playing games. My parents had a rule for our holidays that we should spend time doing something together. There was to be no television and no Internet. We reached Bukit Bendera the following day,and then wandered around the town for the rest of the afternoon, visiting our favourite shops. We were drinking tea in a café when we heard someone discussing an earthquake off Sumatra,an Indonesian island. After we returned to our hotel,we left for the beach. We went for a stroll on the beach, collecting shells along the way. When I looked up,I could see that the sunlight was more brilliant than I had imagined.Far away,I could see a big tree shaking under the sunlight. We didn't think anything terrible was going to happen. All of a sudden,I realized something strange. It was as if the sea was moving away from the coast.I called my dad to check on this strange event. My dad took a look and his face went pale.In the distance we could see a gray line approaching the coast. It seemed to grow taller by the second. My dad shouted at us to hurry back to the hotel.________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ We waited a long time before going downstairs. ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] My dad shouted at us to hurry back to the hotel. He held my arm and dragged me along. As we got to the gate of the hotel,we heard a noise coming from behind. My father urged us to hide upstairs. We were in a state of terror, and as we got to the second level,we could hear the roar of running water and the shattering of glass. My dad was screaming at us to go up.On the fourth level we paused, staring at the water beneath. It stopped growing.A few minutes later,it started to fall. We waited a long time before going downstairs. As soon as the running water stopped,we could see the unrecognizable gate of the hotel. The hotel was filled with mud and shattered furniture. There were also some people who fell into the water and fainted or cried out in pain. What we saw weakened our hearts,so we decided to assist the victims after a narrow escape.Never had I had such a thrilling but dangerous vacation before. The special visit to Penang left a deep impression on me. 1 / 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
