A
By the time you finish reading this,a species on Earth might disappear forever.Humans need a variety of animals, plants, and microorganisms for healthy living.Studies show that the decline in biodiversity (生物多样性),or the variety of life on Earth, causes a serious threat to our existence. My colleagues and I found that biodiversity is also important for mental health.
Contact with nature benefits mental health, particularly for city residents.People living near green spaces have a 71% lower risk of developing depression and anxiety. However, most studies have not looked at how natural diversity influences these benefits. To explore this,we studied whether environments with many natural features, like trees, plants, and wildlife, improve mental health more than those with fewer features. From April 2018 to September 2023,1,998 people used the Urban Mind app to report their environment and mental health over 41,000 times.
We discovered that green spaces with high natural diversity offer more mental health benefits than those with low diversity.Participants reported that nearly a quarter of this positive impact was due to natural diversity, and these benefits could last up to eight hours. Our study suggests that to promote mental health,we should protect biodiversity. This means moving away from decorative gardens and parks with trimmed grass, which have low biodiversity, toward natural fields and streams that support a variety of plants and animals.
Other studies support our findings.A survey of 15,000 families revealed that those living near areas rich in plants and birds had lower rates of mental health issues, even after accounting for social and economic differences. Our study adds that even brief, daily meets with biodiverse nature can improve mental health.Biodiverse nature wakens the senses, improves focus, and reduces mental tiredness. It also encourages outdoor exercise and social interaction, which improve mood.Additionally, diverse environments reduce pollutants and moderate temperatures, protecting against chronic (慢性的) conditions and stress.

Australia officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as “endangered” on Friday.Conservationists (自然环境保护者) said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala,a globally recognized symbol of Australia's unique wildlife, had been listed as “vulnerable (易危)”on the eastern coast just a decade earlier.“We are taking unprecedented (史无前例的) action to protect the koala,” Minister of Environment,Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of AU$50 million to protect and recover koala habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas' new status (地位) but blamed Australia's failure to protect the species so far.“Koalas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said WWF-Australia conservation scientist Stuart Blanch.“Today's decision is welcome, but it won't stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it's accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken.“We can't afford any more clearing,” she said.“The extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added,“we must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging (伐木).”
Australia's koalas had been living on a “knife edge” even before the “Black Summer” bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing,drought,disease,car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare.“We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon (象征),” Sharrad said,“The bushfires were the final straw. This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing,and seriously deal with the influences of climate change.”

Ⅱ.阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Helping the environment and protecting our resources are very important activities. 1 There are several ways that you can help protect this planet we call home.
Use reusable bags.Plastic bags that get thrown out end up in landfills or in other parts of the environment. 2 Also,it takes decades for the bags to decompose (分解).Therefore, whether you are shopping for food, clothes or books, use a reusable bag. This cuts down on litter and prevents animals from getting hold of them.
Use reusable drink containers.Instead of buying individually packaged drinks, consider buying a reusable water bottle. 3 A lot of coffee shops,Starbucks, for example, even offer a discount to customers who use a reusable container for their drinks.
Save electricity.Use energy-efficient light bulbs (灯泡) instead of regular bulbs. They last longer, which will save you a bit of money. What's more, make sure you turn off lights, the TV,and other devices when you are not using them.Turn off your air conditioning or heat when it's not necessary. 4 Open your windows in the early fall or put on more clothes in the early winter.
Save water.More water is wasted than we realize.Turn off the water tap when you are brushing your teeth.Don't turn your shower on until you're ready to get in and wash your hair.Limit your water usage as you wash dishes. 5
A.This is especially true as the seasons change.
B.And students without doubt can make a difference.
C.They last longer, which will save you a bit of money.
D.Everyone should take measures to fight against the water pollution.
E.These can kill animals who get stuck in them or mistake them for food.
F.Not only will this help protect the environment, but help you save money.
G.Developing these habits will be good for both the environment and your wallet.
[答案] 1-5 BEFAG
Ⅲ.语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
In recent years, the concept of “rewilding” 1.has gained (gain) attention in ecological discussions.Rewilding refers to restoring ecosystems to their natural state by reintroducing species and reducing human impact. When 2.practiced(practice) effectively, rewilding can help balance ecosystems, combat climate change, and protect biodiversity. For example, the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park 3.has transformed (transform) the park's environment in surprising ways.
This practice, however,is not without challenges.Critics argue that it requires 4.careful (care) planning and often faces resistance from local communities. Some fear that rewilding 5.will disrupt (disrupt) traditional ways of life or lead to unexpected consequences.Despite these concerns, many scientists believe that rewilding offers a chance to rethink how humans coexist with nature.Instead of 6.viewing (view) ourselves as separates from ecosystems, rewilding encourages a perspective of unity.
Keeping that 7.in mind, the success of rewilding often depends on public awareness and support.Involving local populations in decision-making ensures 8.responsibility (responsible) and mutual benefit. As society faces increasing environmental crises, rewilding is seen by some as a hopeful strategy to repair the 9.damage (damage) caused by decades of overexploitation. It's clear that rewilding is not just about returning nature to its past but also about redefining our future relationship with it.With 10.growing(grow) awareness of environmental issues, the idea of rewilding continues to gain momentum globally.
