Lisa was running late. Lisa, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform, Lisa felt weak and tired — maybe it hadn’t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.
Several yards away, Frank, 43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying.
But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling, “Oh, my God, she fell in!” Frank didn’t hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. “No! Not you!” his girlfriend screamed after him.
She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa, he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station.
It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the platform so that bystanders could hold her by the grips and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.
Lisa thought she’d been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn’t, and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.
Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40-minute train ride downtown — just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which made her think about her reaction at the time. “I saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to die,” she explained.
4. What was the most probable cause for Lisa’s weakness?
A. She had run a long way. B. She felt hot in the subway.
C. She had done a lot of work. D. She had donated blood the night before.
5. Why did Jennifer try to stop her boyfriend?
A. Because they would miss their train: B. Because he didn’t see the train coming.
C. Because she was sure Lisa was hard to lift. D. Because she was afraid the train would kill him.
6. How did Frank save Lisa?
A. By lifting her to the platform. B. By helping her rise to her feet.
C. By pulling her along the ground. D. By dragging her away from the edge.
7. When did Lisa become conscious again?
A. When the train was leaving. B. After she was back on the platform.
C. After the police and fire officials came. D. When a man was cleaning the blood from her head.
【答案】4. D 5. D 6. A 7. B

A recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health has highlighted the critical role of school sports in shaping teenagers’ well- being. Conducted by a team of researchers from three universities, the study tracked 2,500 students aged 13-17 over two years, comparing those who participated in at least one school sports club (e.g., basketball, running, or yoga) with those who did not.
The findings were clear: physically, students in sports clubs showed a 28% lower risk of developing obesity (肥胖) and a 35% higher level of cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness than non- participants. Dr. Elena Marquez, the lead researcher, explained, “Regular sports activities during school hours help teenagers build muscle strength, improve flexibility, and develop healthy habits that last into adulthood such as choosing water over sugary drinks.”
Mentally, the benefits were equally significant. Surveys completed by the students revealed that sports participants reported 40% fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression. “Team sports, in particular, teach teenagers communication and teamwork skills, which boost their self-confidence,” Dr. Marquez added. “When a student scores a goal or helps their team win, they feel a sense of achievement that reduces stress and improves their mood.”
However, the study also pointed out a challenge: only 45% of the surveyed schools offered more than three sports options, and 15% had no after-school sports programs at all. “Many schools face budget cuts that limit their ability to hire coaches or maintain sports facilities,” Dr. Marquez noted. “This means some students — especially those from low-income families who cannot afford private sports classes — miss out on these benefits.”
To address this issue, the researchers suggested several solutions. Schools could partner with local sports centers to share facilities, or invite volunteer coaches (e.g., former students who played sports in college) to lead clubs. They also recommended adding “micro-sports” (short, easy activities like 10-minute dance breaks or quick stretching sessions) to daily class schedules, making fitness accessible to all students
“School sports are not just about winning games,” Dr. Marquez concluded. “They are about helping teenagers grow into healthy, resilient (有韧性的) adults. Every school should prioritize providing diverse and inclusive sports opportunities.”
8. What did the study find about students in school sports clubs?
A. They were more likely to choose sugary drinks. B. They had better cardiovascular health.
C. They reported higher levels of anxiety. D. They had a 28% higher risk of obesity.
9. Why do team sports help reduce teenagers’ stress according to Dr. Marquez?
A. They allow students to avoid difficult homework.
B. They give students a sense of achievement.
C. They help students make more friends online.
D. They teach students to ignore their mistakes.
10. What is Dr. Marquez’s attitude towards the current state of school sports programs?
A. Satisfied. B. Unconcerned. C. Worried. D. Doubtful.
11. What solution did the researchers suggest to make school sports more accessible?
A. Asking students to pay for private sports classes.
B. Cutting budgets for other school programs to support sports.
C. Adding short “micro-sports” to daily class schedules.
D. Closing school sports clubs and using local centers instead.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. C

With fundamental developments in the field of technology, some experts foresee serious risks to jobs and employability in the coming years due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Approximately 27% of jobs are at high risk of automation during the artificial intelligence era.
Low and middle-skilled jobs are most at risk, including construction, farming, fishing, forestry and, to a lesser extent, production and transportation. High-skilled occupations, despite being more exposed to recent progress in AI, face the least risk of automation.
While the adoption of AI is still relatively low, rapid progress, falling technology costs and the increasing availability of workers with AI skills suggest that the world may be on the edge of an AI revolution (革命) . So far there is little evidence of a negative employment impact on firms that adopt AI. Workers and employers say that AI can reduce boring and dangerous tasks, leading to greater employee engagement and physical safety.
Nevertheless, a recent survey showed that three in five workers are worried about losing their job to AI within the next decade. Additionally, a similar number of workers worry that wages would decrease due to AI. More than half of workers are concerned about privacy and three in four say that AI has increased work pace.
In my opinion, for the better protection of the labour market and workers in the coming years, governments should encourage employers to provide more training, integrate AI skills into education and support diversity in the AI workforce. There is an urgent need for policy action to address AI risks in the workplace and to ensure accountability for and openness to employment-related decisions supported by AI. The recent speedup of generative AI-related developments and tools marks a technological watershed (转折点) with material implications in many workplaces. Longer-term policy frameworks for the use of AI in the workplace should be considered and closer international cooperation should be seen to maximize the benefits while appropriately managing the risks.
12. Who may be most affected by automation?
A. A tour guide. B. A building worker. C. A coffee producer. D. A farming professional.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards the adoption of AI in the workplace?
A. Deeply concerned. B. Strongly opposed.
C. Carefully optimistic. D. Relatively conservative.
14. What do the figures in paragraph 4 imply?
A. Harmed personal privacy. B. Decreased job satisfaction.
C. AI-related positions’ popularity. D. Workers’ broad concern over AI.
15. What is the author’s advice in the last paragraph?
A. Adopting policies to regulate AI’s impact. B. Limiting AI’s application in the workplace.
C. Promoting cooperation between AI firms. D. Investing more in AI education in colleges.

Simple ways to improve your written English
Many people think it is really difficult to improve (提高) their writing in English. Don’t worry, though. Here are some simple steps that you can take to improve your written English.
● Increase your vocabulary.
To express yourself clearly, you need a good active vocabulary. That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly. ___16___
Tip: When you learn a new word, try to learn all the forms of that word.
● ___17___
People often say that we learn to write best by reading. Reading in English is useful in many ways. It is a great way to get an idea of the different styles of writing and see how to use words properly.
Tip: ___18___ Learning shouldn’t be boring. Read each text several times to make sure you understand how to use new words and expressions in the text.
● Improve your grammar.
Grammar is very important because it improves the quality (质量) of your writing.
Tip: ___19___ The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.
● Just do it!
The best way to improve your writing is to get a pen and paper and write. Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text. ___20___
A. Know your readers.
B. Read widely and often.
C. Always check your writing twice.
D. Remember, practice makes perfect!
E. Choose books or articles that interest you.
F. Use simpler language and shorter sentences to show your ideas.
G. Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.
【答案】16. G 17. B 18. E 19. C 20. D
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇应用文。文章就如何提高英语写作水平给出了三点建议。
【16题详解】
根据本段小标题Increase your vocabulary (增加你的词汇量)及空前That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly.(这不仅仅是能够知道很多单词,这意味着能够正确地使用它们)可知,G项Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.(通过例句学习新单词,而不仅仅是单词表)符合文意。选项G中的new words与标题中的vocabulary以及与上句中的lots of words呼应,并且选项G中的doing this可与use them correctly形成指代关系。故选G。
【17题详解】
根据其它两个小标题的句式可知,此处应填简短的祈使句。由第二段小标题下的Reading in English is useful in many ways.(读英语在很多方面是很有用的)可知,这个小标题强调读英语的重要性。
Choose books or articles that interest you.(选择你感兴趣的书或文章)符合文意。故选E。
【19题详解】
根据空后The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.(第一次,找出一般的错误,第二次,找出你正在学习的语法点的错误)可知,此处指写完后要检查两遍。由此可知,C项Always check your writing twice.(经常检查你的写作两次)符合文意。选项C中的“twice”可与其中的“The first time…the second time”呼应,故选C。
【20题详解】
根据空前Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text.(准备好写几遍的打算)及本段的小标题Just do it!(就这么干吧!)

Dear Bob,
How are you doing lately? I’m writing to share my feelings about my brand-new high school life.
The moment I entered our school, I was completely amazed by its enchanting campus and modern teaching facilities. There’s a huge football field and basketball courts. After class, I often play football with classmates — we laugh and run around, which makes school life so fun and colorful. What impresses me most is the strong academic atmosphere and devoted teachers, whose innovative teaching approaches capture my heart and benefit me greatly. However, I also come across some challenges, like how to make a scientific schedule and complete the mountainous homework on time. Plus, how to balance listening to teachers in class with taking notes is also a headache for me.
Looking ahead, I hope to adjust myself, improve my learning efficiency and get adapted to the new campus life soon. Do you have similar experiences? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

A She had run a long way. B. She felt hot in the subway.

9 Why do team sports help reduce teenagers’ stress according to Dr. Marquez?
D
With fundamental developments in the field of technology some experts foresee serious risks to jobs and employability in the coming years due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI).
