In the jungles of Madagascar, lemurs (狐猴) that rarely came out of the trees before are coming out of the trees. On the banks of the Amazon, the bearded sakis (僧面猴) are swinging down from their branches to get cool.In Mexico, spider monkeys are exploring the shady forest floor.
As the world warms and as tropical forests are thinned out, a study has found the world’s primates (灵长目动物) are more likely to leave their trees—spending more time in the relative cool of the ground.

The findings involve an analysis of 47 different lemur and New World monkey species.Over the course of 150, 000 hours of observation at 68 different sites, scientists found that among tree-living species the hotter it got the longer they spent on the ground. The same was true in more deforested areas.
The study was international cooperation among dozens of scientists, but it came about because of a few subjective observations.Dr. Giuseppe Donati, from Oxford Brookes University, had noticed that the lemurs he was observing were behaving differently.“They were coming out of the forest to eat crops on the ground, which was very unusual.”

Across the world, colleagues reported similar trends. They decided to conduct a global study of the relationship between time spent on the ground and different variables.
“The idea was, if they start to spend more than a minimal part of their time on the ground, that means something has happened, and that climate change or deforestation is causing a shift,” Donati said.
Moving to spend longer on the ground can be seen as a sensible adaptation to changes in habitat. However, the scientists’ data showed that not all species were able to make the shift. In particular, those more likely to eat fruit and move in smaller packs—with fewer eyes to watch out for predators (捕食者)—suffered.

To the human ears, a field of flowers is silent, except the noise of birds and insects. To certain animal ears, however, a field of flowers is full of conversation.
It has long been known that plants communicate when stressed. You need only observe a houseplant to realize that a plant wilts (枯萎) when it needs water, or turns yellow at the edges when it has been watered too much. Some plants may also send out a bitter taste to deter insects from taking advantage of their stressed state and eating them up; while others may emit organic compounds to alarm other plants in the area.

Now, a new study, conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University, shows that not only do plants express themselves in the above ways when stressed, they also emit sounds.
According to the study, plants emit sounds at frequencies between 40 to 80 kilohertz—beyond the range of human ears, but within the range of some animals.“While imperceptible to the human ears, the sounds emitted by plants can probably be heard by such animals as bats, mice, and insects,” explained Dr.Lilach Hadany, a Professor at Tel Aviv University and a co-author of the study.

One of the primary breakthroughs of Hadany’s study is that the researchers have managed to understand and classify the sounds that plants generate for the first time.Plants that are not stressed produce about one noise per hour, but plants that are stressed, thirsty, or injured make many hundreds of sounds per hour, and each of these sounds seems to be specific to the type of stress the plant is under.
This type of information could be vital for agriculture.Knowing what sounds their plants are making could help farmers determine whether their crops are in danger or drought or disease and allow them to make the necessary changes to let their plants to thrive.

Amazingly enough, the researchers are not actually sure how the plants make sounds, though it may have something to do with cavitation (空穴现象), which is when the water tension in the plants becomes too high and the water turns to gas, making an ultrasonic(超声波的) popping noise.
Whatever the case, this is still a game-changer for plant science, and potentially for the future of agriculture. One day soon your plants may be-able to tell you if they are hungry, thirsty, or just feeling lonely.

36.【解析】选F。本题可利用分析逻辑关系法来解。空前句提到你可能从内心的声音中听到了长时间的数落;空后句提到这里有几种方法可以改变你的自我对话脚本,并利用你的内心声音让你表现得更好。F项中的“negative comments in your head”与空前句中的“an earful from your inner voice”相呼应,且其中的“make it difficult for you to succeed”与空后句中的“perform better”相呼应。

40.【解析】选A。 故选A。
