He always felt like everyone was watching and each look hurt him. He hated being the center of attention, so he kept to himself, avoiding group activities and conversations. Luckily, Ms. Green noticed him. She was the kind of teacher who could bring out the best in every student. “Hey, Jasper,” she said softly, “I know school can be hard, but you are able to shine.” A few days later, the headmaster announced a model airplane competition. Ms. Green thought it would be perfect for Jasper. She paired him with Rustle, an outgoing kid who was always up for a challenge. Rustle didn’t seem to care about Jasper’s skin. He just wanted to build a great plane. “Let’s do this, man,” he said to Jasper. At first, Jasper just wanted Rustle to take the lead, but Rustle kept encouraging him, “You’ve got great ideas. Tell me what you think.” Hearing this, Jasper slowly started sharing his ideas. When they had problems, Rustle would smile and say, “It’s OK. We can learn from them. Failure is just another word for learning.” Together, they found ways to fix the problems. Rustle’s support helped Jasper believe in himself. Step by step, Jasper became more willing to share and felt happier working with this friend. On the day of the competition, their plane soared (翱翔) higher than any other. They won the first place, and the crowd cheered. Ms. Green smiled at Jasper, inviting him to speak about their project. He took a deep breath and stepped up. He talked about their work, the troubles, and how they teamed up. His voice grew louder as he spoke. The audience gave a long and thunderous round of applause. For the first time, Jasper felt truly discovered—not for his skin, but for his mind and creativity. With a friend like Rustle and a teacher like Ms. Green, he felt brave enough for whatever came next. 23. What was Jasper like at school at first? A. He stayed active in class. B. He avoided talking to others. C. He tried to be noticed by others. D. He asked the teacher many questions. 24. What truly changed Jasper? A. The praise from the headmaster. B. The attitude towards his teachers. C. The love of his parents and friends. D. The support from Ms. Green and Rustle. 25. After this experience, Jasper would probably ________. A. trust himself when facing challenges B. hide himself from most of his friends C. depend on the teacher more than others D. focus on building model airplanes all the time C Spring brings warmer weather, green plants, and the return of birdsong. Songbirds are famous for their special songs, which they use to attract mates and protect their homes. But how do birds learn these songs? And what motivates (激励) them? When talking about learning, it is important to know the difference between extrinsic (外在的) and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside, such as reward or praise. Intrinsic motivation comes from inside—the joy of learning something new. Although both types can help us learn, intrinsic motivation often leads to deeper and longer-lasting learning. Dopamine, a brain chemical, plays an important role in sending signals related to learning, reward, and motivation. In order to understand how the intrinsic motivation works, a research team from Duke University in the US studied the dopamine flow in zebra finches’ brains without any extrinsic rewards. Their findings, published in Nature, give us ideas about how both birds and humans learn. During the study, young zebra finches, who had already memorized their father’s song, were placed alone in soundproof rooms. They practiced every day for a month, singing up to 10,000 times a day. Their random chirps (随意的啁啾) slowly turned into nice melodies. While the birds practiced, researchers measured dopamine levels in their basal ganglia—a brain area important for learning skills. They found that every time a bird tried to sing, dopamine was released (释放). It didn’t matter if the singing was beautiful or not—the effort itself activated the brain’s reward system. The birds’ efforts to learn their songs without extrinsic motivation show how intrinsic motivation operates, leading to successful learning. Beyond dopamine, the researchers also discovered acetylcholine (乙酰胆碱) as another important chemical messenger in the process. “These findings translate across species,” Professor John Pearson said, “The brain regions and chemicals—like the basal ganglia, dopamine, and acetylcholine— are also found in mice, monkeys, and humans.” By studying how birds learn to sing, we can have a better understanding of ourselves. It may also help research into brain diseases like Parkinson’s, and skills like playing music or sports. 26. Why did researchers study the zebra finches’ dopamine flow? A. To discover how birds practice songs. B. To understand what intrinsic learning is. C. To know how intrinsic motivation operates. D. To find out which brain area dopamine is from. 27. What did the researchers discover according to Paragraph 3 and 4? A. A new method to measure dopamine levels. B. The ways to help birds improve singing skills. C. The birds’ nature to follow their parents’ songs. D. The connection between practice and dopamine. 28. What can we learn from the passage? A. Talent holds great importance in mastering a new skill. B A quiet environment reduces stress and improves new skills. C. Extrinsic motivation has a sharp influence on learning a skill. D. The study of how birds learn teaches us about learning new skills. D On weekends, some people rush to select photos from a marathon and write like “pushing my limits” right after crossing the finish line, eager to post them on social media. Others spend vacation evenings stressed about perfecting travel videos, carefully choosing background music, worried they might miss a chance to show off a “perfect holiday” to others. We live in such an “achievement society” where leisure (休闲) has lost its true purpose. Instead of being a break from tiredness, it has become a new stage for branding and selling ourselves. We fill our free time with self-promotion, turning relaxation into a competitive and tiring performance that finally leads to burnout, and then we easily get distracted (分心的) by the desire to gain others’ praise. To escape this trap, we can turn to the wisdom of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, who lived from 384 to 322 B.C. In his famous Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle starts by saying that we are all searching for happiness, but he argues we are often confused about how to achieve it. He points out that pleasure, wealth, honor, and power do not bring lasting happiness. True happiness comes from our choices of habits, which are not just about action, but also motives (动机) and character, he says. Good habits are the result of moving constantly in the right direction through practice. In Aristotle’s view, the true meaning of such self-development differs sharply from self-promotion. In an achievement society, we are often forced to respond to outside pressures to self-promote. We may instead look to pleasure, wealth, honor and power for happiness. This can sidetrack our self-development needed for true happiness. For Aristotle, leisure is very important for self-development. The true purpose of leisure is not tied to the need to achieve—it is time we can reflect on our real needs, develop friendships, think for ourselves, and step back and decide what kind of life we truly want to live. Without such leisure, happiness stays out of reach. In today’s achievement-focused society, we must rethink leisure: not as a tool for self-promotion, but as a space to grow. The choices we make during our free time can either bring us closer to happiness or lead us toward burnout. After all, true happiness comes from becoming the best of ourselves, not meeting others’ standards. Aristotle told us that we can control the most important things in a good life: what kind of person we will become. And leisure is the time when we can decide what habits to develop and what kind of person to be. Will we give in to the achievement-focused society? Or will we use our free time to develop ourselves as individuals? 29. Why does the writer mention two examples in Paragraph 1? A. To introduce the negative influence that social media has on people. B. To compare different kinds of activities in leisure time. C. To show what leisure in an achievement society is like. D. To explain why leisure is important for personal growth. 30. What does the word “sidetrack” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A. Distract. B. Direct. C. Decide. D. Discover. 31. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with? A. Self-promotion in leisure blocks true happiness. B. True happiness comes from pleasure and honor. C. Shared standards are connected with true happiness. D. Leisure should be used for self-promotion. 32. According to the passage, what is a good example of spending free time for its true purpose? A. Following others to spend evenings watching popular TV shows. B. Posting photos on social media and collecting one hundred likes. C. Reading a favorite book in the park and relating it to real life. D. Buying expensive new-style sports shoes and showing them off. 第三部分 本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。 七、阅读表达(第1-3题每题2分,第4题4分,共10分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 The Magic of rituals in Our Lives Have you ever wondered why some moments in life feel extra special? It might be because of something called “rituals”. But what exactly are rituals? Psychologists say that rituals are a set of actions done in a certain order. These actions are symbolic and don’t have a direct practical purpose. For example, on a free morning, you wake up, make your bed neatly, and then enjoy a cup of warm coffee while reading a few pages of your favorite book. This simple routine can be a personal ritual. It makes you feel good and ready for the day. Rituals offer us a number of benefits. First, they can help us feel less worried. In an experiment, people were asked to sing a song in front of strangers, which made them nervous. One group was told to do a little ritual, like holding hands together and taking deep breaths three times before singing. The other group just sat quietly. The people who did the ritual sang better, had a lower heart rate, and felt less anxious. Moreover, rituals are great for building a sense of community. When a football team gets together and does a chant before a game, it makes them feel more united. In schools, morning gathering can be a kind of ritual. When everyone gathers together, sings the national anthem, and listens to announcements, students may feel like they are part of a big school family. In our daily life, if we create our own rituals, we should make them simple and positive. Before an important test, you could write down three things you’re confident about yourself. Or every Sunday evening, you and your family could sit down and talk about the best and worst things that have happened during the week. These small rituals can add a lot of meaning and happiness to our lives. So, think about it— what kind of rituals can you start in your life? 33.
