Breathing heavily, sixteen-year-old Ava Carter climbed the rocky mountain road. Ava had always been a quiet, thoughtful girl—until she lost her position as editor (编辑) of the school magazine, a role she had proudly held for two years. When she began to doubt herself too much, she left the noisy school behind and came to the mountains, searching for more than just a new beginning.
This wasn’t just a hike to clear her mind. Ava was on a journey to rediscover herself. Though the road was difficult, each step filled her spirit with new energy.
On the second day, while walking through a hard part of the path, she saw something strange—a young eagle lying on the ground, hurt and unable to fly well. It looked weak and helpless after last night’s storm. Ava felt sad and wanted to help it.
Right away, she made a camp near the bird and gave it water and food, hoping it would trust her. The eagle watched her carefully, backing away at first. But Ava stayed, speaking softly with endless patience. She refused to leave the suffering creature alone.
Day after day, she returned, focusing only on helping the eagle. She built it a small home, gently cleaned its wounded wing, and made sure it had enough food to recover. Sometimes Ava questioned whether she was making a difference. Yet, as the eagle grew stronger, so did she.
Weeks later, Ava woke to find the eagle standing tall on a rock, spreading its wings wide to face the rising sun. It’s healed (愈合) completely. A deep sense of peace filled Ava’s heart—something she hadn’t felt in a long time. She had set out to heal the bird, but in doing so, she had found her own hidden strength.
Ava watched the bird flying with tears in her eyes—joy and sadness mixed together. The bird was free, and in that moment, she felt free too.
Back at school, she started a blog where she shared stories of growth. Her words soon inspired others, just as she had been inspired. “Sometimes, helping others is the only way to uncover the courage we’ve hidden inside,” she said.
24. Why did Ava go to the mountains?
A. She wanted to help the eagle. B. She went to rediscover herself.
C. She enjoyed hiking on her own. D. She planned camping near the bird.
25. How did Ava help the eagle?
A. She called a vet for help. B. She gave it food and water.
C. She trained the bird to fly on its own. D. She took it to a hospital for treatment.
26. What did Ava learn from this experience?
A. Helping others can help us discover inner strength.
B. Real power comes from being alone and independent.
C. When facing difficulties, we should change the environment.
D. Personal growth depends on the experiences outside of school.

Every year, a lot of food is wasted, and kitchens are one of the biggest causes. The Zero-Waste Kitchen aims to change this by helping people cook and manage food with as little waste as possible. This concept (概念) can go back to the 1980s in the United States, but it was Bea Johnson’s 2013 book, Zero Waste Home, that made it widely popular.
Why is the Zero-Waste Kitchen important? Food waste is more than throwing away leftovers (剩饭). It also includes wasting the water, energy, and work used to grow, move, and make food. Cutting down on kitchen waste not only saves money but also helps the environment and makes better use of natural resources (资源).
Many experts believe that small changes in cooking and shopping habits can help people practice a zero-waste lifestyle. Here are some simple ways to start.
Plan before you shop. Buy only what you need. A famous Chef, Massimo Bottura says, “Cooking is an act of love, but it requires planning to avoid waste.” We can make a shopping list according to the planned meals. Then we will buy only what is necessary, reducing the chance of food going bad.
Store food properly. As a food storage expert, Karen Kingston notes, “Proper storage can make the life of food longer and keep its good value for health. For example, using the right boxes and knowing how to keep different kinds of food can help stop food from going bad.”
Make good use of leftovers. “Leftovers are an opportunity for creativity,” says Chef Dan Barber. Instead of throwing them away, we can use leftovers to create new meals. For example, leftover vegetables can be used to make soup, and overripe (熟透的) fruit can be used for juice. If leftovers cannot be eaten, they can be composted (制成堆肥) to improve soil and reduce waste.
All in all, the Zero-Waste Kitchen is a simple and practical way to protect our planet. By making small changes in daily life, we can all help make the future cleaner and greener. Next time you cook, can you find one way to waste less?
27. According to the passage why is cutting down on kitchen waste important?
A. Because it is an easy task to complete in our everyday life.
B. Because kitchen waste is the main cause of resource shortage.
C. Because it helps to save on costs and benefits the environment.
D. Because kitchen waste is responsible for most of the water waste.
28. Why does the writer use the example of Chef Massimo Bottura in Paragraph 4?
A. To teach readers how to make a shopping list.
B. To explain why shopping needs better planning.
C. To encourage people to cook more often at home.
D. To show us how famous chefs cook delicious meals.
29. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What effect food waste has on today’s environment.
B. Why it’s important for us to live a zero-waste lifestyle.
C How we can practice a zero-waste kitchen in daily life.
D. How the Zero-Waste Kitchen concept developed over time.
D
A study published just last month, in April 2025, showed that 164 children from ages 7—10 put more trust in the search engines (引擎) all the time than in asking a person—and that trust increases as children get older.
Interestingly, when kids were asked whether a person or a search engine would be better at predicting the future, they showed less trust in general, but still preferred searching for answers online.
Why? Many answered that the search engine has a lot of information. Still, they didn’t consider what they’re missing: not only the chance to discuss with a real person, but more basically, the deepening of their relationships.
This isn’t just about how long kids can stay focused. Pioneering research from Dr. Rachel Romeo’s team at Harvard shows that the quality of child-adult conversation directly shapes brain development, especially in areas responsible for focus, critical thinking, and emotion management. Their functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) (功能性磁共振成像) studies show that kids who have more interactive (互动的) conversations show stronger brain connections between language and decision-making areas. These conversations do more than build brains, though. They’re key to strengthening (加强) the connections between children and their parents.
Consider the difference between 1. sitting quietly without saying a word; 2. asking, “When are you going to finish your homework?”; and 3. asking, “Why do you think your friend is having so much trouble?” In the first two situations, kids aren’t given the chance to think through their ideas, nor do they get the chance to spend time learning how we or others think. That’s not the way to build their skill of seeing things from others’ viewpoints and their feelings of connectedness. In an increasingly separated world, that level of connectedness is key. It’s a quality we need to get back.
A 2024 article by Dubinsky and Hamid found that children learn best when allowed to grapple with challenging ideas in an active learning environment. These environments give them more control and also encourage their curiosity and drive. Yet today’s “just search online” culture steals this key cognitive (认知的) exercise from them and takes away that more active, positive effort.
30. Why does the writer compare three situations in Paragraph 5?
A. To stress the importance of silence in child development.
B. To criticize parents for asking too many questions about homework.
C. To argue that children should avoid interacting with adults altogether.
D. To show how conversations influence children’s ability to understand others.
31. What does the word “grapple” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. Use search engines. B. Avoid hard tasks.
C. Try hard to solve a problem. D. Accept information.
32. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. FMRI is unnecessary for studying brain development.
B. Kids should be encouraged to have more interactive talks with adults.
C. Modern technology has little negative influence on children’s learning.
D. Using search engines is a better way for children to learn new information.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To tell us how search engines work effectively.
B. To tell us the role of fMRI in studying brain development.
C. To tell us modern technology has little positive influence on learning.
D. To tell us to reduce the dependence on search engines and talk to others more.
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics surprisingly didn’t go to a typical physicist, instead, to two pioneers in machine learning: John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton. What they did was to use principles from physics to make discoveries in machine learning, which pushed the development of AI. This is a perfect example of joining ideas from different subjects to achieve a breakthrough (突破). It’s cross-disciplinary learning at its best.
In simple terms, cross-disciplinary learning is about not sticking to just one subject. It means being curious and open to ideas from different fields—whether it’s science, art, history or technology—and using that knowledge to improve our own understanding.
Cross-disciplinary learning is nothing new. We have seen many examples over the centuries. Even the ancient Greeks practiced it. They believed that music, math and astronomy (天文学) were interconnected. This helped them make groundbreaking discoveries.
Great minds like Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton and Zhang Heng gave us amazing and influential creations because they were inventors, scientists, mathematicians, engineers and more, all at the same time. These inventors used knowledge from many different fields.
As they proved, great achievements often come from thinking beyond the boundaries of a single subject. This is why, nowadays, schools are pushing cross-disciplinary studies. They hope that by drawing from multiple areas, students can contribute to different fields and make a meaningful influence.
Cross-disciplinary learning can help you gain new opinions, find creative solutions and, most importantly, better prepare you to deal with the complex challenges of tomorrow. You never know where inspiration (灵感) might come from. Sometimes the best ideas are found in the most unexpected places. So, go ahead, mix it up, learn from everything, and see how far it takes you!
