The books on this list are important introductions to world literature. The Seagull By Anton Chekhov Price:$40.4 The book is a scene-of-life read set in the Russian countryside at the end of the 19th century. All characters are dissatisfied with their lives. Some want love. Some want success. No one, however, ever seems to get happiness. Some people view The Seagull as a tragic (悲剧的) play about always unhappy people. Others see it as a humorous and bitter book, making fun of humans’ foolishness. Candide By Voltaire Price:$48.6 Voltaire offers his view of society in Candide. The book was published in 1759, and it is often considered the author’s most important work. A simple-minded young man, Candide is sure his world is the best of all worlds, but a trip around the world opens his eyes about what he believes to be true. Jane Eyre By Charlotte Bronte Price:$128.6 Charlotte Bronte’s heroine was one of the first in English literature to serve as first-person narrator(讲述者) of her own life story. Jane falls in love with a rich man, Rochester, but on her own terms, and only after he has proven himself worthy of her. The Bluest Eye By Toni Morrison Price:$28.6 It tells a story of Pecola Breedlove, a young African American girl who dreams of having blue eyes-a sign of acceptance in a world ruled by white conceptions of beauty. 1. What is special about The Seagull? A. People have different ideas about it. B. Characters in it are happy with their life. C. All characters make their dreams true finally. D. A journey around the world. D. A dream he had at night. 3. Which would you choose if you want to read a girl dreaming of becoming beautiful? A. The Seagull. B. Candide. C. Jane Eyre. D. The Bluest Eye. B My phone rang after I boarded a plane. It was my former PhD adviser calling to tell me that a preprint had just posted identified flaws (缺陷) in a paper we’d published in Nature. My stomach dropped as he told me the authors of the critique (评论) were demanding a retraction (撤回). The plane soon took off. I spent the 16-hour flight processing a mix of emotions —disbelief, embarrassment, frustration—and wondering what this would mean for my career. After the plane landed, I took out my laptop and logged onto the airport WiFi so I could read the critique myself. It was harsh and thorough, pointing out several fundamental flaws in our methods and in the basic data which we’d gathered from other studies. The fallout was swift and intense. I received a flood of emails and messages. Some were from supportive colleagues, but many were harshly critical of our work. I felt deeply embarrassed by the criticism. We wrote a draft response, correcting the apparent errors in the data set and defending our methods. We decided against publishing our response, however, after receiving feedback from peer reviewers. When it became clear that the retraction was unavoidable, I formally offered my resignation (辞职) to my department head. He didn’t accept it, saying a resignation wasn’t needed considering the errors in the paper were honest mistakes. The experience helped me grow as a scientist. I learned that it is better to be open and accountable, even if it means admitting mistakes. I can’t expect myself to know everything as a scientist and my work will be stronger if I seek out diverse expertise and opinions. In the end, the reality is that retractions are a necessary part of the scientific process—and one that shouldn’t be viewed only through a negative lens. Retractions can also be an opportunity to learn and improve. Honest mistakes happen, and researchers should be encouraged, not punished, for doing the right thing and retracting flawed work. 4. What news did the author get after boarding the plane? A. His research paper would be published soon. B. Some mistakes were found in his preprint. C. His paper was demanded to be retracted. D. His career might be influenced. 5. What does the underlined word “fallout” mean? A. Answer. B. Result. C. Failure. D. Rejection. 6. Why was the author’s resignation refused? A. He had a reputation for honesty. B. He made mistakes unintentionally. C. He corrected his mistakes in the paper. D. He had made contributions to the department. 7. What did the author learn from his experience? A. Retractions can be a chance to learn. B. Scientists ought to know everything. C. Honest mistakes are unavoidable in science. D. Admitting mistakes can be really embarrassing. C It doesn’t seem logical that a five-foot, seven-inch young man from Argentina could somehow turn into the world’s best soccer player. A person diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency and without the economic resources to pay for the expensive treatment to treat that condition would also not be an ideal candidate to inherit the title of “World’s Best” from the likes of Diego Maradona, Ronaldo, or Pelé. But Lionel Messi defies (违抗) logic and has regularly done so since he joined his first soccer team when he was only four years old. Quite simply, there has never been a player like Messi who could continue, week in and week out, to defy the limits of the sport and continually surprise the entire sports world. Even athletes from other sports have expressed their disbelief at Messi’s exploits on the field. NBA basketball star Kobe Bryant has said that Messi is the “greatest athlete that I’ve ever seen”. When we watch Messi on the field, it is easy to assume that Messi is simply a genius to play soccer at levels never before seen. Carlos Tévez, Messi’s teammate on the Argentinean national team, says that “Messi is from another planet”. But is that where Lionel Messi’s talent comes from? Is he a sort of Superman with supernatural soccer abilities? Our journey into the life story of Lionel Messi will show that Messi’s rising to fame is the result of a life of struggle and sacrifice. We will see how an undersized boy from Argentina defied the odds and overcame numerous obstacles to become one of soccer’s most important players… of all time. Javier Mascherano, Messi’s current Barcelona and Argentina teammate, says that “although he may not be human, it’s good that Messi still thinks he is”. Lionel Messi’s modesty, shyness and quiet public behaviours spring from his own recognition of his humanity, characterized by a life of sacrifice. 8. What does the author think of Lionel Messi’s success? A. It’s reasonable. B. It’s unexpected. C. It comes too late. D. It comes naturally. 9. Which proverb best describes Lionel Messi’s success according to Paragraph 4? A. Hard work pays off. B. Interest is the best teacher. C. Confidence leads to victory. D. Fortune favours the prepared mind. 10. How does the author try to prove his point in the text? A. By listing some facts. B. By giving some examples. C. By borrowing some words. D. By making some comparisons. 11. What is the author’s tone like in the text? A. curious. B. doubtful C. admiring. D. surprising. D The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational technology (EdTech) has brought incomparable convenience and efficiency to classrooms worldwide. However, despite these advancements, it is crucial to recognize the challenges these AI-driven tools pose to the autonomy and professional judgment of instructors. One of its primary concerns is the depersonalization of instruction. These tools often rely on pre-packaged digital content and standardized solutions leaving insufficient room for instructors to tailor their teaching methods. Each student possesses unique characteristics. Instructors, armed with their wealth of experience and knowledge, are best positioned to tailor their approaches to these individual needs. However, AI-driven tools restrict their ability to do so effectively, resulting in a one-size-fits-all approach that fails to inspire students to reach their maximum potential. EdTech companies offer step-by-step solutions to textbook problems. These are intended to act as study aids. However, some students employ this feature as a means to merely copy solutions without comprehending concepts. Consequently, instances of cheating on assignments and exams become widespread. While these tools may offer convenience, students may use external resources or cooperate with others during quizzes, affecting the honesty of their learning outcomes. The implications of this depersonalization and the increase in academic dishonesty are far-reaching. By decreasing the role of instructors as facilitators of meaningful educational interactions, we run the risk of preventing the growth of critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students. Education should not only focus on knowledge acquisition, but should also develop the ability to analyze, evaluate, and apply that knowledge in real-world contexts. It should help one’s mind grow, not simply memorize information. Through dynamic classroom discussions, cooperative projects, and hands-on activities, instructors play a crucial role in developing these essential skills. While AI-driven EdTech tools undeniably have their virtues, we must not lose sight of the importance of preserving instructor autonomy and educational experience. Instead of relying only on pre-packaged content and standardized solutions, these tools should be designed to empower instructors to adapt and customize their approaches while taking full advantage of the benefits of technology. 12. What do the underlined words “the depersonalization of instruction” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Tailored methods for individuals. B. Instructors’ dependence on Al. C. Insufficient resources of Al-driven tools. D. The one-size-fits-all approach. 13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. A possible solution. B. A further problem. C. A well-meant intention. D A suggested application 14. In what aspect do students suffer most with AI-driven EdTech education? A. Thinking skills. B. Teamwork building. C. Interest development. D. Knowledge acquisition. 15. What is conveyed about Al-driven EdTech tools in the last paragraph? A. They should be used widely. B. Their benefits deserve our attention. C. Their resources need enriching. D. They should support instructor autonomy. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Rock music consists of many different styles. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did. So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try. I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 西北师大附中 2025—2026学年第一学期期中考试试题 高三英语 注意事项: 1. 1. First, it helps to combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting, such as back pain and stiffness. Second, it can improve your focus and concentration, making it easier to stay engaged in class. Lastly, it promotes a healthy and active lifestyle, which is essential for overall well-being. So, next time you feel a bit sluggish during class, remember to stand up and stretch! I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!” I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
