Hundreds of people came to watch other people rolling (滚) cheese down a hill on May 29. The cheese-rolling race was held in the village of Brockworth in the UK.
The cheese is made into a 3~4 kilogram hard round wheel. Competitors run after the cheese. The cheese can roll down the hill at speeds of over 100 kilometers per hour. The first person to finish behind the cheese gets to keep it. However, running down the almost vertical (垂直的) 180-meter hill isn’t easy. And few competitors can stay on their feet all the way down.
Delaney Irving, 19, who is from Canada, won the women’s race even though she was knocked unconscious on the way down. Irving told the BBC that the race was “good… now I remember it”. “I remember running, then falling down, hitting my head, and then I woke up in the tent,” she said. “I still don’t really believe it, but it feels great.”
Matt Crolla, 28, from England, won the first of several men’s races. Asked how he had prepared, he said, “I don’t think you can train for it, can you? It is just being stupid.”

Imagine taking a flying taxi to the airport, or jumping over crowded city streets at rush hours, getting where you want to go much faster than you could in a car. Believe it or not, you might be able to do these things in an air taxi sooner than you think.
An air taxi is something like a helicopter (直升飞机). It can carry people from place to place. Air taxis don’t need a long runway like planes do. They can go straight up and down.
In June, the American government agreed to allow a company called Joby Aviation to start testing their new air taxi. This is the first time they have tested a taxi built in a factory. Before that, all their taxis were made by hand.
By 2025, Joby hopes to start carrying people for money. In order to create a program to fly people from their homes to the airport, Joby chose to work with Delta Air Lines. Joby’s air taxis will be flown by a pilot and can carry four other passengers. They can go about 100 miles before recharging (充电).
Compared with helicopters (直升飞机), the air taxis are quieter and cheaper. The company expects to charge about $3 a mile at first. But over time, they hope to bring the price down to less than $1 a mile.
And as exciting as the idea of flying taxis is, some people have concerns about them. The air taxis may be quieter than helicopters, but they’ll add noise and traffic to our skies. Some people worry that only rich people will be able to use them.
It seems that air taxis will be part of the future of travel. But there’s still a lot to do before air taxis become common.
52. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By raising a question. B. By imagining a scene.
C. By presenting a picture. D. By making a comparison.
53. Which of the following is TRUE about Joby’s new air taxi?
A. It’s made by hand. B. It can fly 100 miles per hour.
C. It looks like a helicopter. D. It can only carry four people.
54. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The concerns about the new air taxi. B. The noise created by the new air taxi.
C. The traffic rules to be made soon. D. The high price of taking the new air taxi.
55. What is the best title for this passage?
A. A new flying taxi B. Various means of transportation

①Leshan Giant Buddha sits near the hometown of Pandas in Sichuan, China. It is one of the most popular places for tourists. Here are some facts about the giant Buddha.
②The construction (建造) of the giant Buddha started in 713. At that time, floods (洪水) often happened in the Leshan area because the Min River, Qingyi River and Dadu River come together in that area. It was a super project in ancient times, and it required a lot of money.
③Haitong went to many places to raise money. After years, he finally raised enough money to start the construction. He gouged (挖) his own eyes out to show that he was serious. The soldiers were scared and went away.

It took 90 years to complete this world’s largest stone Buddha under the hard work of three generations of craftsmen (工匠). Till now, the giant Buddha has sat on the riverbank of Leshan for over 1,300 years.

The hotel has four twin-bed cabins (小木屋) and a romantic grotto (洞穴) with a double bed. One night stay for two people in a private cabin costs $350. While the price for two in the grotto is $550. And if you’ re a single guest, you will have to pay the price of two, too.
You can only book the hotel for a Saturday night to Sunday morning. It is far from relaxing to get to your room. You will have to walk into the mountains. It takes about 45 minutes. And at the end of the way you’ll get things you need before going into the world’s largest and deepest slate mine.
The trip down into the mine includes ancient miner (矿) stairwells (楼梯井), old bridges and a scramble (攀爬). It takes about 60 minutes, and as soon as you complete the trip, you’ll arrive at a set of large doors. Welcome to Deep Sleep!
Then, try and relax for the evening with a free meal at the picnic table. After that just go to bed.

I hoped to be set free one day, so I was nice to the Lilliputians. Gradually (渐渐地), ________. Sometimes the children even played hide-and-seek (躲猫猫) in my hair.
One day, the king said to me, “Gulliver, I invite you to watch an important performance. It is a competition called Rope Dancing.” In the contest, a thin rope was tied very high above the ground. People had to dance on this rope. Each dancer tried to jump higher than the others. I had never seen such a dangerous sport.
“Many dancers must fall and get hurt or killed,” I said.
“Yes,” he replied. “But I will give the best jobs in my kingdom to the men who are not afraid and jump the highest.”
“What a strange way to choose who will work for the country!” I thought.
Then, as the king watched, I tied each corner of my handkerchief (手绢) to a strong stick and pushed the four sticks into the ground. My handkerchief was now under the rope but above the ground. Any dancer who fell would land on the handkerchief and not get hurt. The king was very happy about this. His family and many other people watched the rope dancing.
“Would you and the queen like to see better?” I asked the king. I put them on my hand and held my hand beside the rope. They had a good view of the dancers. One very excellent performer held on to the rope and flipped (翻转) his body right over it. The king and the queen cheered loudly. Later, the king told me that he made this man one of his chief (首要的) advisers.
The king and I met often. He seemed to enjoy our conversations. One day, I said again, “Please set me free.” This time, he answered, “I have talked to my advisers. We agree that you have been good to our people ...”

Another winner was Ryoya Minami from Japan. When he was asked why he entered the race, he said, “Because I love cheese.”

And as exciting as the idea of flying taxis is some people have concerns about them.

C. The traffic rules to be made soon. D. The high price of taking the new air taxi.
55. What is the best title for this passage?
A. A new flying taxi B. Various means of transportation
C. The future of travel D. A company developing air taxis

Chinese monk Haitong decided to lead people to build a Buddha to calm (使平静) the fast-running waters. The boats traveling down the rivers often turned over because of the fast-running water. It was a super project in ancient times, and it required a lot of money.
③Haitong went to many places to raise money. After years, he finally raised enough money to start the construction. When he got back to Leshan, the greedy officials (行政官员) wanted to force Haitong to hand in the money. Haitong refused even though the officials sent soldiers (士兵) many times. He gouged (挖) his own eyes out to show that he was serious. The soldiers were scared and went away.
④In the year 713, Haitong started the construction, but he passed away when the giant Buddha was built to the shoulders. It took 90 years to complete this world’s largest stone Buddha under the hard work of three generations of craftsmen (工匠). Till now, the giant Buddha has sat on the riverbank of Leshan for over 1,300 years.
