The Internet provides a great amount of information. However, you might notice that the same ideas often reappear on certain social media platforms. If this happens, be careful. You may be in what’s called an echo chamber (回音室)—a space where only similar opinions spread.
This phenomenon (现象), which has been around since the early times of human culture, has been greatly spread with the use of social media. Imagine ancient humans gathered around a bonfire, sharing only stories and experiences that strengthened their beliefs. Today, social media platforms connect people globally and enable the sharing of thoughts and beliefs.
You might have noticed that social media advertising seems to “magically” understand your interests, presenting ads that are surprisingly related to you. This is the result of sophisticated algorithms (算法)—sets of instructions designed to perform tasks or solve problems. Every time we click, like, or share something, we leave a digital footprint that helps algorithms better understand our interests, values, and beliefs. Algorithms then use this information to provide content that meets our interests.
Although echo chambers can provide a sense of belonging, they also bring some negative effects. Building a relationship with others only within a one-sided information space can misguide people’s opinions, making it hard for them to accept different points and discuss events with tons of information involved. Echo chambers can also contribute to increasing disagreement and anxiety, which further divides societies. They twist reality, mixing up fact and opinion. This weakness leaves us open to misinformation, influencing both personal decisions and societal dynamics.
Luckily, there are many ways to break out of echo chambers. Actively looking for different information sources is rather important for overcoming these disadvantages. This can include diversifying (使多样化) our social media content, reading articles from different points of view, and joining meaningful discussions with people from different backgrounds. Besides, developing critical thinking skills is necessary. We should check facts and remain open to changing our opinions.
31. According to the passage, what is an “echo chamber”?
A. A platform that connects people globally.
B. A space where people can only get similar ideas.
C. A place where people can freely express different opinions.
32. Why does the author mention ancient humans around a bonfire?
A. To explain how algorithms were first invented.
B. To encourage people to use more traditional methods.
C. To compare their communication with modern social media.
33. Why do social media ads seem to understand users’ interests?
A. Because ads are designed to solve problems.
B. Because ads are carefully chosen by the platform.
C. Because algorithms can follow users’ digital footprints.
34. How do echo chambers influence personal decision-making?
A They may blind people with similar information.
B. They might make decisions better as well as faster.
C. They may help provide balanced thoughts and information.
35. Which of the following is suggested as a way to break out of echo chambers?
A. Following a few social media accounts.
B. Pay close attention to factual information and be open.
C. Joining discussions with meaningful topics.
【答案】31. B 32. C 33. C 34. A 35. B

Taking Pictures or Taking Notes?
In a class last December, I wrote some directions on the blackboard for students about their final examination. One young girl quickly took a picture of the board using her smartphone. When I looked in her direction, she apologized, “Sorry. Was it wrong to take a picture?”
“I can’t read my own handwriting,” she explained. “It’s best if I take a picture of your writing so I can understand the notes.”
Those words started a heated discussion about taking a picture instead of taking notes. Some took pictures of notes because they thought they might lose paper, but they wouldn’t lose their phones. Some took photos because they wanted to record exactly what had been written on the blackboard. Others told me that during class, they would like to listen to the discussion attentively. Taking notes would distract them from important information.
It may be convenient to use cameras as note takers. Yet it does raise some questions about the classroom. Is a picture as an effective (有效的) replacement for the process of note-taking?
Teachers encourage students to take notes because the act of doing so not only records necessary information but also helps prepare the way of understanding. Encouraging students to take notes seems to be an old-fashioned teaching method. But a method with a long history doesn’t mean it’s out of date. Writing things down makes a student’s brain take an active part in it, according to a study. The act of writing down information enables a person to begin keeping it in mind, and break it into smaller pieces and relate it to what they already know, and play with it in their head.
Taking a picture does record the information. However, your brain can not get involved in it. And this is what note-taking is exactly rich in. So can the two be as effective as each other?
56. How did the young girl take notes in the writer’s class?

【答案】范文:
Mistakes—Road Towards Success
Mistakes are a part of life. Instead of fearing them, we should see them as chances to grow.
Firstly, mistakes help build resilience. Mistakes teach us to never give up and stay positive. For example, I once failed a math test, but I didn’t lose heart. I kept trying and finally improved.
Secondly, mistakes help us learn. They deepen our understanding of knowledge. When I made grammar mistakes in English, I studied harder and now I can use grammar rules better. Also, mistakes teach us to be more careful.
Lastly, mistakes make us more confident. After solving problems from mistakes, we believe we can face challenges bravely.
In a word, mistakes are the road towards success. Let’s embrace them and grow!

A. They may blind people with similar information.
