History of an Olympic Park B Growing up in rural Malawi, Africa, William Kamkwamba learned to accept that life was hard. He lived with his parents and seven sisters in a small clay house without electricity or running water. Like most boys in his village, William was expected to assist his parents on the family farm, as well as keep up with his school work. Each night, like most Malawians, his family went to bed early because the kerosene oil they needed to light the lamps was costly. When he was 10, a terrible drought left many Malawians hungry and William’s family was no exception. At the age of 13, William and many other children were forced to drop out of school when their parents could no longer afford his schooling. William had to work even harder to help his family, but he wasn’t ready to give up his education. He went to the local library and took out some books to study. One book, called Using Energy, sparked William’s interest in science and gave him an idea that significantly changed his future. In the book, William found a picture of a windmill, and a brief description of how it could be used to generate electricity from wind. He knew that there was plenty of wind in his village, and realized that if he could build a windmill like that, he could give his family and the people in his village a much better life. There was just one problem. The book didn’t explain how to build a windmill, and neither did any of the other books in the library. What happened over the next year demonstrated William’s incredible ambition and determination. He began to collect any kinds of materials he thought could be useful—scraps of wood, broken bicycles, old shoes—and started to build a windmill next to his family’s house. He endured many challenges and failures. Other people in his village called him crazy and said his idea would never work. Finally, at the age of 14, William completed his first windmill. When they saw electric lights and heard the sound of music on the radio coming from William’s house, the village people came running. He had done it. William Kamkwamba had found a way to capture the wind. Kamkwamba’s autobiography, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, tells the story of how the rest of the world came to know about his achievements. With the help of international supporters, his village now has clean running water, solar powered lighting, and electric power. As a result of his actions, Kamkwamba was invited to study engineering at Dartmouth College, one of the top-ranking universities in the U. S. He also travels the world and gives talks about how he made his dream a reality. 24. William went to the local library because ________. A. he wanted to find some materials for his invention B. it was his favorite way to kill time and relax C. it was believed to be a way to change his fate D. he wanted to continue his education 25. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________. A. why the windmill is so attractive B. how William got inspired by a book C. why William decided to continue his education D. how a windmill works to produce electricity 26. William Kamkwamba can be best described as ________. A. brave and patient B. honest and forgiving C. ambitious and determined D. reasonable and humorous 27. What is the message conveyed in the passage? A. We should strike while the iron is hot. B. A good beginning makes a good end. C. One who lives his dream can make a difference. D. You’d better not put all the eggs in one basket. C Success and Risk in Extreme Sports What is it that drives some to take extreme risks, while the rest of us hurry for the safety of the sidelines? Lester Keller, sports-psychology expert, says that not everyone has the mental makeup to do well in extreme sports. He notes that most of us hit a natural ceiling that limits our appetite for extreme risk in tricky conditions. But others have a much higher tolerance for risk. Keller points to a top ski racer. He told Keller that “the high element of risk makes you feel alive, tests what you are made of and how far you can take yourself”. He said he would get nervous on some of the courses, but that this would just make him fight more. Psychologists note that some people seem to have a strong desire for adrenaline (肾上腺素) rushes as a behavior seeking excited feelings. Like many extreme athletes, Emily Cook’s appetite for risk appeared at a young age. “I was a gymnast,” she said. “I was one of those kids who enjoyed and did well at anything where you were upside down.” As she started doing harder tricks, she was drawn to the challenge. “There are moments when you’re up there doing a new trick and it seems like an impossible thing. But overcoming that is just the coolest feeling in the world.” Shane Murphy, sports professor, has worked with groups climbing Everest. “To me, that just seems like the height of risk,” he said. “But to them it was the next step in an activity that they’ve prepared for years.” Murphy said the view of extreme athletes is different from our own. “We look at a risky situation and know that if we were in that situation we would be out of control. But from the athletes’ view, they have a lot of control, and there are many things that they do to minimize risk.” Another aspect of risk perception (认知) may be something referred to as “the flow”, a state in which many athletes become absorbed in the acts that focus the mind completely on the present. “Something that makes you try doing a tougher climb than usual, perhaps, is that your adrenaline flows and you become very concentrated on what you’re doing,” Murphy says. “After it’s over, there’s great excitement.” People of different skill levels experience the flow at different times. Some may always be driven to adventures that others consider extreme. “I can enjoy hitting a tennis ball around, because that’s my skill level,” Murphy says. “But others might need the challenge of Olympic competition.” 28. By using the term “natural ceiling” in Paragraph 2, Lester Keller points out that ______. A. extreme athletes must learn special skills B. extreme athletes have chances to take risks C. many people don’t want to do extreme sports D. many people can’t limit desire for extreme sports 29. What does Shane Murphy think about the mountain climbers he mentions? A. They put in lots of preparation for challenges. B. They are more fortunate than other sportspeople. C. They carry little risk when facing big challenges. D. They have special reasons that others can’t easily understand. 30. What main point is made in Paragraph 5? A. Extreme athletes use techniques other people don’t use. B. Non-athletes are probably wise not to try extreme sports. C. Most people lack the focus required to take bigger risks. D. A certain state of mind makes attempting an activity more likely. 31. We can learn from the passage that ______. A. risk-taking is something you either naturally do or avoid B. those who take risks are more likely to be successful in life C. extreme athletes are driven by a need to be better than others D. taking part in extreme sports is not as difficult as people think 第四部分:书面表达(共两节,26分) 第一节(共4小题;第48题1分,49题2分,50题3分,第51题5分,共11分) 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。 A Reflection about Change Change can be exciting and hard. It is also a fact of life in the world of education. I am a librarian at a high school. I have worked as a librarian for the past eleven years. This year my school is going through a tremendous transition. There is a new school building being constructed with a mid-year move planned. Additionally, due to some restructuring, I am working with a new teaching partner and two new grade levels. This is all incredibly exciting but also brings a level of uncertainty too. I could look at this in a negative way, but instead, I am going to focus on the upside to this transition. So here I share some ways I am embracing this change. Working with teachers, that I have not had an opportunity to work with before, will allow me to gain new perspectives about the needs of the students in my school. The library program has been something I have worked hard to build over the past nine years. I am very close to it. It will be helpful for someone who has an outside perspective to ask questions about our practices. It will allow me to reflect on why we do certain things and will make the program better moving forward. As I gain new perspectives from my colleagues, I also have an opportunity to share the mission of the library. It has given me a chance to highlight some of the great lessons and projects I have had the opportunity to be a part of in the past. Is this a hill I want to die on? This is about recognizing the things that I can change and making those work rather than worrying about things that I have no control over. It is about not sweating the small stuff. If I ask myself this question and the answer is no, then I have to let it go and move on! One of my wonderful colleagues, Cheri Dobbs, told me to give myself permission for things not to be perfect. Next year will be a year of growth. The library program will not be exactly like what we want it to be. That is OK! As long as we stay true to our goals and support students the best we can, then the rest will come together eventually. 32. What changes are happening to the author this year? 33. What will the author get from someone who has an outside perspective? 34. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. To deal with change, we should work on the things that we can change and try our best to make the things we have no control over under control. 35. Besides the opinions mentioned in the passage, what are your thoughts on change?
