She smiled at me and said, “If somebody says something bad to you, put it in the pocket with a hole. Let it go quickly. The hole is for all the problems that you don’t want.” I was really surprised and attracted (吸引) by the two magic pockets and I did what my grandma said.

Traditionally, we take the subway with our subway cards or by scanning QR codes (扫描二维码) on our smartphones. But now, people traveling on the Beijing Daxing Airport Express subway have a new way to take a ride—they can scan their palms (手掌).
To enjoy the service, people need to register (登记) their palm prints on machines in subway stations along the Daxing Airport Express subway line. Before the arrival of computers and smartphones, Chinese children grew up with traditional games and outdoor activities. Today, let’s look at three popular traditional Chinese games that are still widely loved in modern life.
Jianzi came from cuju, a ball game, in the Han Dynasty. It has been around for over 2,000 years. Jianzi is a simple game with just one rule: players must keep the jianzi in the air as long as possible using any part of the body except for the hands. Although the rule is very simple, the game is quite challenging and requires good coordination (协调性). Nowadays, besides being played in schoolyards, jianzi is also very popular among the elderly (老年人).
Kongzhu is an hourglass-shaped (沙漏形状的) toy made of wood or bamboo.
Kongzhu playing dates back more than 1,000 years and is especially popular in northern China. When playing this game, a player uses a string (细绳) connected to two hand sticks. The player needs to move the hand sticks up and down to keep the kongzhu spinning (旋转) without it falling to the ground. In 2006, the game was included on the list of China Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Douququ began in the Tang Dynasty and became popular in the Song Dynasty. It’s a sport with fights between two crickets (蟋蟀). First, crickets are chosen and grouped according to the size, weight and color. The two are then placed in a small “battlefield”. The cricket owners use straws (麦秆) to encourage their crickets to fight each other. Today, there are still cricket-fighting clubs in some cities.

Then they have to activate (激活) the palm-scanning function on their smartphones. Once they do this, they can scan their palms at ticket gates to pass through. After they finish the travel, the payment service on their smartphones will pay the money for their ride.
Many people welcome the new technology. They think it helps them to travel faster and more easily. They don’t have to take out their subway cards or smartphones when they want to pass through the ticket gates. And they no longer have to worry when they forget their subway cards or when their smartphones run out of battery. What’s more, the palm-scanning technology is very friendly to old people and those who have special needs. Those people may not use smartphones well. This technology makes it possible for them to take the subway without using smartphones.
Besides Beijing, the palm-scanning technology is also in service in the subway station of Shenzhen. And there are hopes that it can be used in more places like stores and restaurants in the future.
