Text 10
The 59th annual Grammy Awards was a night to remember, full of unforgettable performances. This year’s most memorable artist was definitely Adele, who amazed the audience with her voice and unique style. Fashion designers praised her dress that looked like it was made of glass, which she wore for her performance of “Hello”. They also loved the beautiful green gown that she wore for the rest of the night. It was her performance of “Hello” from her album 25 that was most extraordinary. In contrast to the other artists, who used moving set pieces and back-up dancers, Adele stood motionless, under a single light, and let her voice impress the audience. On a night that celebrates the best in music, and surrounded by the outstanding singers like Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, and Drake, this was a reminder just how talented this woman is. She was also given the honor of paying her respects to legendary pop artist George Michael — who had recently passed away — by singing his hit song “Fastlove”. At one point during the performance, she had some technical difficulties with the sound system, and she stopped the performance so she could start again, saying “I’m sorry, I can’t mess this up for him. I’m sorry.” When she accepted the award for Album of the Year, she dedicated her award to Beyoncé, her inspiration for many years — another example of professionalism from one of the world’s most beloved artists.
A篇
思路点拨 根据文中对National Theatre的介绍中的“National Theatre is one of London’s best places to enjoy concerts and plays”和文中对Royal Albert Hall的介绍中的“Completed in 1871, the concert hall is also home to the annual BAFTA Awards.”
思路点拨 通读全文尤其是根据文章第一段中的“London has lots of cool buildings to offer. Here are some of the best examples”可以推断,本文主要介绍了伦敦几个最酷的建筑物的相关信息。
根据文章第一段中的“London is a city always under construction and its architecture varies greatly between old and new.”
思路点拨 根据第二段中“Here are two reasons why you should devote a movie night to this modern classic. First, no work of literature deals with female character formation quite as well as Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel. And the 1994 film, directed by Gillian Armstrong, stays true to the spirit of this classic book about four sisters growing up in New England.(以下是你应该花一个电影之夜来欣赏这部现代经典的两个原因。
思路点拨 根据第三段中“This well-rounded focus on women’s many sides sets “Little Women” apart from other 19th-century American stories about women, which often had overly emotional and romantic views of women’s lives.(这种对女性多方面的全面关注使《小妇人》有别于其他19世纪美国关于女性的故事,后者往往对女性的生活有过多的情感和浪漫看法)”可知,作者在第三段强调《小妇人》与其他类似小说的不同之处。故选A项。
思路点拨 根据第四段“In addition to several versions of different quality produced over the years, there is also Greta Gerwig’s 2019 feature-length adaptation. Despite an outstanding performance by Saoirse Ronan, whose Jo, the second-oldest March sister, is perhaps the most detailed and realistic of all, this modern version awkwardly changes Alcott’s message about 19th-century ideas of femininity. Toward the end of the film, Jo says lines that seem borrowed from a 21st-century course on women’s studies, and reflect experts’ understanding rather than the original text and spirit of the novel.(除了多年来制作的几个不同质量的版本外,还有格蕾塔·葛韦格2019年的长篇改编版。
思路点拨 根据最后一段中“In the 1994 adaptation, overlayed on the central plot of character development is a warm, idealized, familial atmosphere. This quality is key and hard to measure. In short, it’s the kind of movie that makes you want to reach for a blanket and tea, even if you typically don’t like blankets and aren’t a tea drinker.(在1994年的改编版本中,在人物发展的中心情节之上,笼罩着一种温暖、理想化的家庭氛围。
思路点拨 根据第二段“Claire Rusch and her colleagues have been working to uncover ways to avoid mosquito bites. And this biologist knows plenty about that. After all, to study mosquitoes, 'you get bitten a lot,' she notes.'It’s not easy to work with an animal that preys(捕食) on you.'(Claire Rusch和她的同事们一直在研究避免蚊子叮咬的方法。
思路点拨 根据第四段中“Mosquitoes don’t start hunting until they’ve smelt carbon dioxide(CO2). So, the team sprayed(喷) CO2 inside the box as part of the experiment. Cameras recorded where’ the mosquitoes flew and how they interacted with the colored disks.
思路点拨 根据第一段中“A new study has just identified a new way they home in on us. It’s visual. 以及倒数第二段中“Now, they know that vision also plays an important role.( 现在,他们知道视觉也起着重要的作用。)”
思路点拨 根据最后一段中“There is still much to learn about how mosquitoes see their world. 故选A。
思路点拨 根据第一段“The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said. 及第四段中“Brusatte said that becoming smaller was ‘a common way that mammals deal with climate change’.
思路点拨 根据划线词句前文“Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. 和划线词句中“The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than bigger animals (原因尚不完全清楚,但可能在一定程度上是因为比较起更大的动物,较小的动物相对于其体积有更高的表面积)”可知,体型较小的动物比体型较大的动物更容易散热,从而推知划线部分“and can thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat (从而可以提高额外热量的dissipation)”其中划线部分意思是“散发”。
思路点拨 根据最后一段中“However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Professor Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak.(然而,并不是所有的专家都认为气温升高会导致哺乳动物体型缩小。 以及“That is not happening in today’s world.(这在今天的世界是不会发生的。)”
思路点拨 通读全文,根据第一段“The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
36.F 思路点拨上文“If you have perfect vision, you probably don’t worry too much about eye health.(如果你有完美的视力,你可能不会太担心眼睛健康。)”提到了视力好的情况,下文“Therefore, you may find the following tips helpful in protecting your eyes.(因此,你可能会发现以下建议有助于保护你的眼睛。)” F项中的However与上文形成转折,“vision problems can happen to anyone”讲述了任何人都可能有视力问题,符合题意。故选F。
37.C 思路点拨 上文“Mainly, you want produce that contains vitamins A, C, and E, which can help prevent some diseases like cataracts. Look for dark-colored vegetables such as peppers and sweet potatoes.(大多数情况下,你需要含有维生素A、C和E的农产品,这有助于预防白内障等疾病。 推荐了含有维生素A、C和E的一些食物,再结合小标题“Eat for your eyes”可知,本段主要推荐吃对眼睛好的食物,所以空处应承接上文,提出另一些含有这些维生素的食物,C项中的“these nutrients”指代设上文中的“vitamins A, C, and E”,且“nuts and seeds”引出了新的食物选择。故选C。
38.G 思路点拨 上文“To help reduce this strain, experts recommend following the 20-20-20 rules.(为了帮助减少这种压力,专家建议遵循20-20-20规则。)”
39.E 思路点拨 上文“It’s always a good idea to wear something in situations that might put your eyes at risk, whether you’re playing sports or doing construction work.
40.B 思路点拨 上文“Other than looking cool, sunglasses protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays(紫外线).(除了看起来很酷之外,太阳镜还能保护你的眼睛免受紫外线的伤害。)”

56. a
57. Growing/Having grown
58. whose
思路点拨 分析句子结构,and his mother, ... lower body was paralyzed, used a wheelchair.
59. was admitted
故填 was admitted。
60. Initially
61. on
relying instead on school scholarships
62. to pursue
思路点拨 the opportunity to do sth 是固定搭配,意为“做某事的机会”。
63. has published
主语 he 是单数,故用 has published。
64. scientific
名词 science 的形容词形式是 scientific(科学的)。
65. that
思路点拨 动词 shows 后接了一个完整的宾语从句 with hope and determination, we can all live up to expectations...。

Hopefully, my proposal will be taken into serious consideration.
After knowing everything about Carl, my Mom told me her way to solve this problem. After some thinking, my mother said in a soft voice that we should protect his self-esteem rather than punish him without mercy. Therefore, the following weeks,I took two desserts in my lunch bag with a note saying,“Should you be in need of help, please let us know.”
Carl was touched and asked me if he could visit my house and thank my mother. Knowing that he had read the note,I nodded with a smile and his face lit up. Much to my surprise,Carl actually turned up in my house after school, looking nervous and shy."Welcome to my house and make it your home."My mother hugged him tightly, tears of gratitude rollng in his eyes."It is your desserts that teach me how sweet the world is,"he said. Hearing this, I came to realize that tolerance is a kind of vitue, making a great difference to the world.

London is a city always under construction and its architecture varies greatly between old and new. Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast or a casual visitor, London has lots of cool buildings to offer. Here are some of the best examples:
Houses of Parliament
Situated on the bank of the Thames, the building was designed by architect Sir Charles Barry and completed in 1834. It’s connected to the Elizabeth Tower, which houses Big Ben. Guided tours are available, with options for families with young kids. Tours are available on select dates, so check online in advance before visiting.
National Theatre
Designed by Sir Denys Lasdun and Peter Softley, National Theatre is one of London’s best places to enjoy concerts and plays. It contains three different theaters and has become a must-go destination for visitors since its completion in 1963. The concerts and plays can be extremely popular, with tickets selling out far in advance, so be sure to book seats ahead of your visit.
The Shard
The Shard stands 95 stories over London. It was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and completed in 2012. It contains offices, restaurants and bars, the Shangri-La Hotel and a public viewing gallery. The viewing platform, which offers 360-degree views, can be found on floors 68, 69 and 72, and is London’s highest viewing gallery. Be sure to book a timed ticket in advance when visiting.
Royal Albert Hall
Completed in 1871, the concert hall is also home to the annual BAFTA Awards. It has a long history of famous performances, from hosting the Titanic Band Memorial Concert in 1912 to being the site of Adele’s performance in 2011. Many concerts take place here every week, so there is no need to book tickets online in advance.

C. The Shard. D. Royal Albert Hall.
22. What do National Theatre and Royal Albert Hall have in common?

Looking for a new film for the holiday season? Consider watching the 1904 version (版本) of “Little Women,” starring Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Claire Danes and Kirsten Dunst.
Here are two reasons why you should devote a movie night to this modern classic. First, no work of literature deals with female character formation quite as well as Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel. And the 1994 film, directed by Gillian Armstrong, stays true to the spirit of this classic book about four sisters growing up in New England. Second, the film stands out independent of the novel, by stressing that living well means centering on others.
In the book, Alcott describes the four March sisters, showing both their admirable qualities and weaknesses that need to be managed. They walk a road to adulthood that is full of personal struggles, self-sacrifice (自我牺牲), and hard-won self-knowledge. Their characters are complex and well-developed, not shallow or simplistic. This well-rounded focus on women’s many sides sets “Little Women” apart from other 19th-century American stories about women, which often had overly emotional and romantic views of women’s lives.
In addition to several versions of different quality produced over the years, there is also Greta Gerwig’s 2019 feature-length adaptation. Despite an outstanding performance by Saoirse Ronan, whose Jo, the second-oldest March sister, is perhaps the most detailed and realistic of all, this modern version awkwardly changes Alcott’s message about 19th-century ideas of femininity. Toward the end of the film, Jo says lines that seem borrowed from a 21st-century course on women’s studies, and reflect experts’ understanding rather than the original text and spirit of the novel.
So, all in all, only the 30-year-old film can be watched again and again. In the 1994 adaptation, overlaided on the central plot of character development is a warm, idealized, familial atmosphere. This quality is key and hard to measure. In short, it’s the kind of movie that makes you want to reach for a blanket and tea, even if you typically don’t like blankets and aren’t a tea drinker. This is what makes it a movie that stands alone, independent of the book.
24.Why does the author recommend the 1994 adaptation of “Little Women”?
A.It stars one of his favorite actresses.
B.It has been popular for the past 30 years.
C.It deals with the topic of women creatively.
D.It remains faithful to the original novel.
25.What does the author intend to stress about “Little Women” in paragraph 3?
A.How it stands out from similar novels.
B.Why it appeals to female readers.
C.What makes it go beyond time and space.
D.What unique writing style it has.
26.What is a weakness of Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation?
A.It uses too many special effects. B.It includes modern ideas about women.
C.It changes the original story a lot. D.It lacks excellent performances.
27.What quality of the 1994 adaptation does the author show in the last paragraph?
A.Its lasting popularity. B.Its simplified storyline.
C.Its marked social effects. D.Its inviting feel.
C
Have you ever wondered how mosquitoes are so good at finding you? A new study has just identified a new way they home in on us. It’s visual. Mosquitoes just like the look of our skin.
Claire Rusch and her colleagues have been working to uncover ways to avoid mosquito bites. And this biologist knows plenty about that. After all, to study mosquitoes, “you get bitten a lot,” she notes. “It’s not easy to work with an animal that preys(捕食) on you.”
To test whether a mosquito has color preference, Rusch got help from a software engineer who designed a test box that was 450 mosquito-body-lengths long. Lined with cameras, it recorded the insects’ flight patterns. Two small colored disks were laid on the floor of the box.
The researchers released about 50 starved mosquitoes into the box. Mosquitoes don’t start hunting until they’ve smelt carbon dioxide(CO2). So, the team sprayed(喷) CO2 inside the box as part of the experiment. Cameras recorded where’ the mosquitoes flew and how they interacted with the colored disks. Whichever disk the mosquitoes flew around longer would be the color the insects preferred.
They found before CO2 was sprayed, the mosquitoes ignored all the colored disks. With CO2, mosquitoes ignored any disk that was green, blue or purple. But the insects did fly toward disks that were red, orange or light blue. These colors, apparently, were inviting. The mosquitoes seemed to especially like red.
The result was beyond the researchers’ expectations because scientists long thought that mosquitoes relied mostly on body smells and heat to find humans. Now, they know that vision also plays an important role.
There is still much to learn about how mosquitoes see their world. It seems logical that mosquitoes might be attracted to red since that is the color human skin appears to them. Still unknown is why they are also attracted to light blue. And, importantly, how might these new data on color preferences be used to design better mosquito traps?
28.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.identifying various mosquitoes. B.Teaming up with other colleagues.
C.Avoiding being bitten by mosquitoes. D.Uncovering ways to catch mosquitoes.
29.Why did the researchers use carbon dioxide in the experiment?
A.To stop mosquitoes flying away. B.To track mosquitoes more easily.
C.To make mosquitoes hunt actively. D.To put more pressure on mosquitoes.
30.What was the discovery of the new study?
A.Mosquitoes track people by smelling. B.Mosquitoes are good at finding their targets.
C.Mosquitoes see the world in a different way. D.Mosquitoes can use eyes when hunting food.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The things remaining to be explored. B.The world in the eyes of mosquitoes.
C.The color preferences of mosquitoes. D.The practical application of the findings.
D
The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
Professor Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the way in which other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer an insight into humans’ future. He compared the potential problem of people as similar to that of early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55 million years ago.
Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. “The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than bigger animals and can thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat,” he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was “a common way that mammals deal with climate change”. He added, “That’s not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures rise pretty quickly. That does raise the question: If temperatures do rise really quickly, might humans get smaller? And I think that’s certainly reasonable.”
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Professor Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak. “We are not really controlled by natural selection,” he said. “If that was going to happen, you’d need to find large people dying before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today’s world. We wear clothes, we have got heating, we have got air conditioning if it is too hot.”
32.How do mammals cope with climate change according to Brusatte?
A.Moving to colder regions. B.Reducing their body size.

School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was. "It's time to rise and shine!" It was my mother's loudest voice. and there was no way I could ignore it or hide from it.
"Okay, Mom. I am getting up and dressed!" When I got up. Mon's loudest voice rose again as she announced, " Breakfast is ready!" By then, the house was filled with the good smell of breakfast and I couldn't help getting to the kitchen fast enough.
“Thanks, Mom! This is my favorite,” I said, enjoying the dishes.
Mom replied, “You are welcome, my dear. Now grab your lunch bag and books. The school bus will be here any minute!" My sisters and I ran out to the bus stop as we grabbed our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit and dessert.
Then one day, to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch bag. I looked through every part of my lunch bag, and even turned it upside down. My dessert just wasn't there. What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make it? “Well," I thought, "it's only one time, so it's no big deal." But for the next several days, my lunch bag contained no dessert. So one day as soon as I got home from school, I asked Mom if she forgot to put a dessert in my lunch bag.
Mom was surprised and responded, “Why? I have been including a dessert in your lunch bag every day. If you are not getting them, then who is?"
Soon when I reviewed my activities and schedules in school, I found Carl-the terror of the third grade. No one liked him in his class because he was rough, often fighting with other boys. Now even worse-he was a thief. "He must be punished," I said angrily. But my Mom seemed to be not angry at all.
