Can you imagine? Carrying this legacy for six generations...” Born into a wrestling family, Bai started practicing basic skills with his family from the age of 4. His excellent wrestling skills later got him into Hebei’s professional wrestling team. After retiring, he returned to his hometown to do business but could never let go of his dream to promote and pass down Chinese-style wrestling. Bai found Baoding, once a birthplace of Chinese wrestling, had no schools teaching its iconic type of wrestling. So Bai decided to open a wrestling school. He transformed his neglected factory into a training gym — a 4,000-square-meter outdoor training ground and a 300-square-meter indoor training facility. Since the school was established in 2013, it has been providing completely voluntary teaching without charging a penny. “The program accepts students regardless of ethnicity, gender, age or region, and anyone willing to learn can sign up,” Bai says. Eighteen-year-old Guo Yuhang, from a nearby village, has been training for nine years. “Guo was a 70-kilogram couch potato when he started,” Bai chuckles. Today, he has gained a future. Of course, he has already lost weight and become well-built, muscular. According to Guo, he has applied to Shandong Sport University for the Chinese-style wrestling major. “I want to be a physical education teacher in the future and teach Chinese-style wrestling like my master,” Guo says. Over the past decade, Bai’s school has not only kept Baoding Fast Wrestling alive but also nurtured many young enthusiasts like Guo. From reviving the fading wrestling style to guiding youngsters toward their goals, Bai keeps moving forward, letting every drop of sweat and every shared skill tell the story of how he chases what his heart has long been tied to. 45.What made Bai begin practising wrestling? A.His family’s influence. B.His father’s expectation. C.His coach’s encouragement. D.His grandfather’s requirement. 46.Which of the following can best describe Bai’s wrestling school? A.Well-equipped and spacious. B.Inclusive and neat. C.Influential and charitable. D.Professional and selective. 47.What is the most significant change in Guo after nine years’ training? A.He has had a well-defined aim. B.He has become a couch potato. C.He has become a handsome boy. D.He has developed an interest in learning. 48.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Aiming for a New Career B.Fighting for His Calling C.Striving for National Glory D.Struggling for His Family 【答案】45.A 46.C 47.A 48.B 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中““My grandfather was a bodyguard and wrestling coach and my father and uncles were all wrestlers. Can you imagine? Carrying this legacy for six generations...”(“我的祖父是一名保镖和摔跤教练,我的父亲和叔叔们都是摔跤手。你能想象吗?这份遗产已经传承了六代……”)”以及第二段中“Born into a wrestling family, Bai started practicing basic skills with his family from the age of 4.(白鹤江出生于一个摔跤世家,从4岁起就开始和家人一起练习基本技能。)” 故选A。 46. 根据第三段中“Since the school was established in 2013, it has been providing completely voluntary teaching without charging a penny. “The program accepts students regardless of ethnicity, gender, age or region, and anyone willing to learn can sign up,” Bai says.(自2013年成立以来,该校一直提供完全自愿的教学,不收取一分钱。 和最后一段中“Over the past decade, Bai’s school has not only kept Baoding Fast Wrestling alive but also nurtured many young enthusiasts like Guo.(在过去的十年里,白的学校不仅让保定快速摔跤运动保持了活力,还培养了许多像郭这样的年轻爱好者)”可知,白的摔跤学校是慈善的,且具有影响力的。故选C。 47. 根据第三段中“According to Guo, he has applied to Shandong Sport University for the Chinese-style wrestling major. “I want to be a physical education teacher in the future and teach Chinese-style wrestling like my master,” Guo says.(据郭宇航说,他已经申请了山东体育大学的中国式摔跤专业。“我将来想成为一名体育老师,像我师傅一样教中国式摔跤,”郭说。)”可知,九年的训练后,郭宇航有了明确的目标。故选A。 48. 通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“From reviving the fading wrestling style to guiding youngsters toward their goals, Bai keeps moving forward, letting every drop of sweat and every shared skill tell the story of how he chases what his heart has long been tied to.(从复兴逐渐衰落的摔跤风格到引导年轻人朝着目标前进,白一直在前进,让每一滴汗水和每一项分享的技能讲述着他如何追求自己长久以来所热爱的事业的故事。)” B。 C Ariel Procaccia has always been fascinated by big questions and hard problems. For example, one of the apps on Spliddit is a rental division. Say a few roommates rent an apartment and have different preferences for rooms. The goal is to assign the rooms and divide the rent in a way that each roommate gets the best deal. By now, Spliddit has been used by thousands of people. Procaccia is especially excited about their work on algorithms for selecting community committee representatives tasked with discussing important issues and making recommendations for policymakers. They’re randomly selected from volunteers. But the random selection needs to be done in a way that leads to a community committee that looks like the overall population. For example, there’s usually a similar number of men and women. Meanwhile, every volunteer has to have an impartial chance of participating in the community committee. Procaccia and his partners developed an algorithm that balances these needs. As a professor, Procaccia works closely with amazing graduate students. Over a typical five-year Ph.D., a special, lifelong bond is formed. Professors and their students often speak of each other as “academic children” and “academic parents.” And as someone who has three actual children, Procaccia thinks there’s a lot of truth to that, especially when his students succeed and achieve their goals. Procaccia believes that much of computer science is essentially about finding the best ways to solve problems. With that kind of toolbox, he says, almost any challenge becomes approachable. So even for those who think computers aren’t their thing, computer science just might be. 49.What is the goal of Procaccia’s work? A.To develop mathematical tools for fun. B.To explore questions about the universe. C.To serve people with algorithms. D.To write a popular-science book. 50.What does the underlined word “impartial” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Fair. B.Unexpected. C.Unmatched. D.Limited. 51.How does Procaccia view the relationship with his students according to paragraph 4? A.It’s similar to family bonds. B.It’s strict professional cooperation. C.It’s a typical teacher-student bond. D.It’s a five-year challenging journey. 52.What’s Procaccia’s attitude toward computer science? A.He thinks it’s too difficult for most people. B.He sees it as a problem-solving tool in life. C.He believes it’s mainly about programming. D.He emphasizes theory over real-life applications. 【答案】49.C 50.A 51.A 52.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据原文第一段“Today, Procaccia is a computer scientist at Harvard University, where he designs computer algorithms that tackle some big problems that directly affect people’s lives.(如今,Procaccia是哈佛大学的计算机科学家,他设计的计算机算法旨在解决一些直接影响人们生活的重大问题。)” 根据原文第三段“But the random selection needs to be done in a way that leads to a community committee that looks like the overall population. For example, there’s usually a similar number of men and women. Meanwhile, every volunteer has to have an impartial chance of participating in the community committee.(但随机选择需要以一种让社区委员会具有整体人口代表性的方式进行。 故选A。 51. 根据原文第四段“Professors and their students often speak of each other as “academic children” and “academic parents.” And as someone who has three actual children, Procaccia thinks there’s a lot of truth to that, especially when his students succeed and achieve their goals.(教授和学生们经常称彼此为 “学术子女” 和 “学术父母”。 故选A。 52. 根据原文第五段“Procaccia believes that much of computer science is essentially about finding the best ways to solve problems.(Procaccia认为,计算机科学在很大程度上本质上是关于寻找解决问题的最佳方法。)” B。 D It seems like such a simple, straightforward idea:  plant trees — a lot of trees — all over the world, and watch the planet’s temperature fall. Planting trees is definitely a good way to improve air quality, promote biodiversity and absorb harmful carbon dioxide emissions from the air. However, if it’s done in the wrong way it could have a negative effect on our environment. Unfortunately, that might be the case when it comes to carbon-offset (碳补偿) planting — a popular method for some companies to offset their carbon footprint. A new study published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution found that carbon-offset tree plantations may decimate healthy ecosystems. “It is crucial to shift from the narrow focus on carbon and adopt a more holistic (全面的) perspective if we aim to effectively conserve and restore natural ecosystems,” said lead author Jesus Aguirre-Guitierrez, a researcher at the University of Oxford. Forests are one of our best lines of defence against climate change and restoring them is crucial, but this can’t be a substitute for reducing carbon emissions directly. A newly-planted tree can take as many as 20 years to capture the amount of CO2 that a carbon-offset scheme promises. We would have to plant and protect a massive number of trees for decades to offset even a small part of global emissions. Even then, there is always the risk that these efforts will be wiped out by droughts, wildfires, tree diseases and deforestation. Ecosystems are incredibly biodiverse, containing different tree and plant species, but carbon-offset planting typically involves just a few tree species. Planting these trees in an ecosystem while financially beneficial damages biodiversity and ultimately harms the very areas that they were supposed to help. Yet some fossil-fuel companies rely on carbon-offset planting in order to reach “net zero carbon emission”. It’s such an easy way to look like they’re doing their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In reality, the best thing that they can do is work towards preserving current ecosystems and reducing their actual carbon footprint directly. 53.What is the main concern raised in the passage about carbon-offset tree plantations? A.They may not effectively reduce global warming. B.They could harm local ecosystems and biodiversity. C.They are too expensive to implement on a large scale. D.They require too much time to have a noticeable impact. 54.According to Jesus Aguirre-Guitierrez, what is crucial for protecting natural ecosystems? A.Focusing only on carbon reduction. B.Adopting a holistic attitude. C.Planting a large number of trees quickly. D.Relying on fossil fuels for energy. 55.What is a key limitation of newly-planted trees in carbon-offset schemes? A.They take a long time to capture significant amounts of CO2. B.They are susceptible to droughts and wildfires. C.They are only effective in certain types of ecosystems. D.They are often planted in areas with high biodiversity. 56.Which of the following statements about carbon-offset planting is TRUE? A.It typically involves planting a wide variety of tree species. B.It is always beneficial to ecosystems, regardless of where the trees are planted. C.Some companies use it as a way to appear environmentally responsible. D.It results in significant carbon capture compared to the emissions of fossil-fuel companies. 根据第一段中“A new study published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution found that carbon-offset tree plantations may decimate healthy ecosystems.(发表在《生态学与进化趋势》上的一项新研究发现,碳补偿林可能会摧毁健康的生态系统)”以及第三段中“Planting these trees in an ecosystem while financially beneficial damages biodiversity and ultimately harms the very areas that they were supposed to help.(在生态系统中种植这些树木虽然在经济上有利,但却会破坏生物多样性,并最终损害它们本应帮助的区域)”可知,文章提及的主要担忧是这类植树活动可能损害当地生态系统和生物多样性。故选B。 54. 根据第一段中“It is crucial to shift from the narrow focus on carbon and adopt a more holistic (全面的) perspective if we aim to effectively conserve and restore natural ecosystems(如果我们旨在有效保护和恢复自然生态系统,至关重要的是要从对碳的狭隘关注转向更全面的视角)”可知,他认为采取全面的态度至关重要。故选B。 55. 根据第二段中“A newly-planted tree can take as many as 20 years to capture the amount of CO2 that a carbon-offset scheme promises.(一棵新种植的树可能需要长达20年的时间才能吸收碳补偿计划所承诺的二氧化碳量)”可知,新种树木的关键局限是需要很长时间才能吸收大量二氧化碳。故选A。 56. 根据最后一段中“Yet some fossil-fuel companies rely on carbon-offset planting in order to reach “net zero carbon emission”. It’s such an easy way to look like they’re doing their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.(然而,一些化石燃料公司依赖碳补偿植树来实现“净零碳排放”。 Lillian Hanson, a college junior, expects to graduate in about two years. Mrs. Hanson, a rather unusual student, plans to go on to take more courses after she gets her degree. What makes Mrs. Hanson different from most of her classmates? What sets Lillian Hanson apart from the college crowd is her age-73 years. She has been going to college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years. When Mrs. Hanson graduated from high school, she went to her local bank and asked for a loan for college tuition and fees. The banker gave her no encouragement. He didn’t think that a country girl should be borrowing money to go to college. He thought she should be home doing work in the house or around the farm. So Mrs. Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going to college. She still lives with her husband on the farm that has been in the family for five generations. Mrs. Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education. When her children were grown up, she tried again. She finds the hardest part of going back to school at her age to be sitting in class for long periods of time. Because she is not able to move as quickly and easily as she used to be, Mrs. Hanson often gets up and walks around between classes to keep from getting rigid. At the beginning of a course in using the computer, the other students all stood up to give Mrs. Hanson big applause when she introduced herself and explained why she was there and what her goals were. 57.What makes Lillian Hanson different from most of her classmates? (不多于2个单词) 58.Why did the banker refuse to provide a loan for Lillian Hanson? (不多于16个单词) 59.What is Mrs. Hanson’s dream? (不多于4个单词) 60.What does she find the hardest part of going back to school? 57.Her age. 58.Because he didn’t think that a country girl should be borrowing money to go to college. 59.Getting a higher education 60.Sitting in class for long periods of time./Sitting in class for a long time. 根据第二段“What sets Lillian Hanson apart from the college crowd is her age-73 years.(使Lillian Hanson与其他的大学生与众不同的是他73岁的年龄)”可知,Lillian Hanson与其他同学的不同之处是年龄,故答案为Her age。 58. 根据第三段“He didn’t think that a country girl should be borrowing money to go to college.(他认为一个乡下女孩不应该借钱去上大学。)” Because he didn’t think that a country girl should be borrowing money to go to college。 59. Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education.(Hanson从来没有忘记她接受高等教育的梦想。)” 根据第五段“She finds the hardest part of going back to school at her age to be sitting in class for long periods of time.(她发现在她这个年纪重返校园最难的事情就是在班上长时间坐着听课。)” Sitting in class for long periods of time./Sitting in class for a long time。 Dear Michael, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________     Best wishes,                                                                                                                                                                  Li Hua 【答案】例文 Dear Michael, Knowing your deep curiosity about Chinese culture and travel, I’m thrilled to share news about the “Discover China” tour! The temperatures is expected to reach a great height of thirty eight degrees, five degrees hotter than this time last year. Meanwhile, in the rain forest in northern queensland, at least two inches of rain are expected to fall over the next twenty four hours. A further ten inches are predicted over the week ahead. Residents should expect flash floods and roads and only travel if essential to do so. The northern territory will see some of this rain as the clouds move in a southwest direction. However, they should only experience light showers, and IT will remain dry and cloudy until friday evening. Each had then write up over the weekend with highs of thirty two degrees in some parts. With all the wild weather of the east coast, the west coast is looking calm. Those living in perth will enjoy warm weather with eyes of thirty degrees. A long wind may become stronger towards the end of the week. As we go further up the coast towards jilin, we see rain showers coming in from the ocean, but these should disappear by thursday. B The air smells of fresh earth and sweat, filled with the sounds of over 30 children training. “This art dates back to the Qing Dynasty,” Bai Hejiang begins, his voice thick with pride. “My grandfather was a bodyguard and wrestling coach and my father and uncles were all wrestlers. A.Aiming for a New Career B.Fighting for His Calling C.Striving for National Glory D.Struggling for His Family C Ariel Procaccia has always been fascinated by big questions and hard problems. As a teenager, his favorite book was A Brief History of Time, which explores deep questions about the universe. Today, Procaccia is a computer scientist at Harvard University, where he designs computer algorithms that tackle some big problems that directly affect people’s lives. One of Procaccia’s favorite projects is Spliddit. Org. It’s a free website that helps people divide stuff in a way that mathematically guarantees fairness. D It seems like such a simple, straightforward idea:  plant trees — a lot of trees — all over the world, and watch the planet’s temperature fall. Lillian Hanson, a college junior, expects to graduate in about two years.
