All-powerful robots and artificial intelligence (AI) have long been the subjects of science fiction (小说). Now such technology means that fact is stranger than fiction. A science fiction story, The Land of Machine Memories, recently received a literary award.
It tells of a relationship between a human and AI. Li Xiao, the hero, is an explorer in the meta-verse (元宇宙) but she works as an engineer in the real world. In an experiment that has gone wrong, she loses all of her memories about her family. To recover them, she steps out onto a journey to explore the land of machine memories with her AI friend Neura. Li eventually regains her memories, gaining a deeper understanding and experience of the universe.
The novel was compiled using AI by Shen Yang, a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the Tsinghua University in Beijing. The story was awarded second prize at the fifth youth popular science and science fiction competition, organized by the Jiangsu Popular Science Writers Association in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.
Fu Changyi, director of the Science Fiction Committee of the Jiangsu Popular Science Writers Association, said he was aware of Shen’s long-term involvement in AI research, so he invited Shen to take part in the competition. Fu kept the fact that The Land of Machine Memories was generated by AI from the judges. He wanted to see if judges could realize what they were reading was the product of a machine.
For Fu, the outcome came as a surprise. Only one judge found out the story was produced by AI. Three out of the six judges voted for The Land of Machine Memories. By competition rules, works recommended by five judges can win a special prize, and works recommended by three judges can win a second prize.
One of the judges who were impressed by the AI story was Wang Yanzhong, a science fiction novelist. “At first I didn’t realize that it was created by AI. There’s no doubt that AI does better than many humans in terms of richness of knowledge. Compared with the works of beginners, it’s outstanding,” he said.
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning The Land of Machine Memories?
A. Its significance. B. Its writing purpose.
C. Its main content. D. Its creation background.
5. What does the underlined word “compiled” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Bought. B. Read. C. Recommended. D. Created.
6. Why does Fu Changyi invite Shen Yang to participate in the competition?
A. To conduct an experiment. B. To attract more contestants.
C. To fool unqualified judges. D. To add to his popularity.
7. What can we learn from Wang Yanzhong’s words?
A. He was angry he was cheated.
B. He thought highly of the AI story.
C. He disagreed with Shen Yang’s ideas.
D. He was impressed by the beginners’ works.
C
Many of us have bought a cheap dress or shirt, only for it to be worn once and thrown to the back of the wardrobe (衣橱). Perhaps you’ve even bought a pair of shoes just to realize you already had a very similar pair at home. Even worse, sometimes the article falls apart after one wash, and it ends up in the waste container.
These shared experiences with so-called “fast fashion” often come with regret — not just for the money spent, but also because it adds to the impact unwanted clothes have on our planet.
Fast fashion is a contemporary term used by fashion retailers to express designs that move from catwalks quickly in order to catch up with the current fashion trends. These trends are designed and created quickly and cheaply to allow the consumers to buy current clothing styles at a lower price. The slow fashion movement has arisen in opposition to fast fashion, blaming it for pollution and emphasizing very brief trends over classic style.
Despite increasing awareness of the human and environmental costs of fast fashion, not everyone has the option of shopping more sustainably. With the rising cost of living in the US and sustainable sizing options a rarity, many wonder if they can afford sustainable clothing that fits them.
You don’t have to break the bank to shop slowly and sustainably. The first step should be to make a list of what you already own. Review each item and decide whether to keep, donate, or sell them. Jennfer Walderdorff, a sustainable fashion consultant, supports having items repaired, which can extend their life. If you really need to replace something, invest in pieces that won’t go out of style.
Buying secondhand is a great way to find affordable, quality clothing. A recent study even suggests buying pre-owned quality clothing that can last longer than fast fashion. “But don’t use that as an excuse to buy more,” cautions Alana James, a fashion designer and assistant professor at Northumbria University. “It can also be a negative thing.”
8. How is paragraph 1 developed?
A. By making comparisons. B. By following time order.
C. By giving examples. D. By following space order.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Slow fashion. B. Fast fashion. C. The store. D. The bank.
10. What is Jennfer’s suggestion?
A. Donating some money. B. Buying some old clothes.
C. Making a list of expenses. D. Having torn clothes repaired.
11. Which statement will Alana James probably agree with?
A. We shouldn’t make an excuse for fast fashion.
B. We should buy clothes that follow fashion trends.
C. It is hard to find high-quality secondhand clothes.
D. Buying secondhand without limit may bring harm.

Spike Lee already had several big moments with the Oscars by the time he finally won a competitive statuette (小金人) in 2019. His first came almost 40 years earlier, in 1983, when he was a film student at New York University (NYU). Lee handed in his master’s thesis film Joe’s Bed-Study Barbershop: We Cut Heads, starring Monty Ross, to the Student Academy Awards (SAA). And it won.
The SAA may not be as exciting or attractive as the Oscars, but in its 50 years, it has proven to be a vital launching ground for new filmmakers.
In 1973, then Academy president Walter Mirisch said, predictably, that they were celebrating the young people who “will be taking our places”. Over the years, student winners have included Pete Docter, who is the Oscar-winning director of Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out, as well as Robert Zemeckis, Trey Parker, Patricia Riggen, Bob Saget and Patricia Cardoso.
Academy members, 640 of them this year, voted on the awards, which offered invaluable exposure for young filmmakers. And winning the SAA means that those films are then qualified for a competitive Oscar nomination (提名) in the short film categories, which happened for one of last year’s winners, Lachlan Pendragon. The Australian filmmaker was nominated for his 11-minute stop-motion animation film An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It, which he animated, directed and provided his voice for.
Giorgio Ghiotto, who won the gold medal this year for his film Wings of Dust, had always wanted to make documentaries. Like what Lee did four decades earlier, he applied to the SAA while studying at NYU. The recognition from academy members at the ceremony earlier this fall inspired him to move to Los Angeles. “It was really amazing to see your dreams starting to come true,” Ghiotto said. “And you go to Los Angeles not just to hold the prize and get rewarded but because there’s a family waiting for you, and the academy family is rooting for you.”
12. What did Spike Lee do in 1983?
A. He starred in his first film. B. He made a successful movie.
C. He won a competitive statuette. D. He entered New York University.
13. What can be learned from paragraph 3?
A. Walter’s prediction came true.
B. NYU employs a lot of celebrities.
C. NYU has financed a lot of movies.
D. Walter is closely connected with the Oscars.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning Lachlan?
A. The process of creating films. B. The advantage of being an actor.
C. The benefit of winning the SAA. D. The importance of college education.
15. What do we know about Giorgio?
A. He was grateful to the SAA. B. He was Spike Lee’s classmate.
C. His family gave him great support. D. He has lived in Los Angeles since birth.

In today’s digital age, managing screen time has become a common challenge between teenagers and their parents. My mother, a traditional and caring person, always emphasized the importance of focusing on studies. She limited my phone use to one hour per day, worrying that too much screen time would affect both my grades and my eyesight.
However, as a high school student, I needed to use my phone for more than just entertainment. Group discussions, research for projects, and even handing in assignments online all required using my phone. Sometimes, I even had to attend online classes or join team meetings through apps. My mother didn’t fully understand these modern learning methods.
We often argued about this. She believed I was wasting time on social media or games, while I felt she didn’t understand my real needs. One afternoon, she confiscated (没收) my phone right before an important online team meeting. I was so upset that I shouted, “You just don’t get it! This isn’t just for fun—it’s for school!” That evening, we didn’t speak to each other.
Lying in bed, I began to reflect. My mother wasn’t just being strict; she truly cared about my future and wanted me to develop good habits. At the same time, I realized I could have communicated more calmly instead of losing my temper. Maybe there was a better way to balance technology and responsibility—one that respected both her concerns and my needs.
注意:1. 续写词数应150个左右;
The next morning, I decided to talk to my mom honestly.

C 9. B 10. D 11. D

故填on。
故填innovation(s)。
故填the。

故填and。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
The next morning, I decided to talk to my mom honestly.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To my surprise, she was willing to listen and work it out.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, I decided to talk to my mom honestly. I made her favorite breakfast and sat down with her after she finished eating. I apologized for shouting at her the day before, explaining that I was stressed about the online meeting but shouldn’t have lost my temper. Then I showed her my class group chats, project research records, and online assignment platforms, telling her how my phone helped with my studies. I also promised to use it responsibly and never waste time on games during study hours.
To my surprise, she was willing to listen and work it out. She patted my hand gently, saying she didn’t realize my phone was so important for school. We agreed to adjust the rule: I could use my phone for study needs without time limits, but entertainment time would still be one hour a day. She also asked me to show her my study progress regularly so that she could feel at ease. This talk helped us understand each other better, and our relationship became closer. It taught me that honest communication is the key to solving conflicts between parents and teenagers.
