W: Hello.
M: Now, the theatre is opening soon after its three-year redevelopment programme, isn’t it?
W: That's right, and there are a lot of improvements. The first thing people will see when they go in is that the hall has been repainted. Then the box office has been adjusted, with its own access from the side of the building instead of through the hall. But the shop that used to be in the hall isn’t yet complete.
M: Will audiences find any difference in the auditorium?
W: Yes, we’ve increased the leg-room between the rows. We’ve installed air conditioning and added seats for wheelchair users.
M: Great. So what’s the first play after opening?
W: The Royal Sun Hunt, starting on October the 13th and running till the 19th. Performances used to start at 7:30, but that made it difficult for people to go home by public transport, so instead, we’re beginning at 7, because at 9:45, when it finishes, there are still buses running.
M: How about the tickets?
W: Ticket prices now are all £18. They’re available from the box office, in person, by phone, or online.
M: Okay, Lynne, now if you’d like to give the contact details…

A
If you’re looking for a nice spot to get in a nap (小睡) on the River Campus, here are my top three napping spots below (ranked from worst to best).
3. The Eastman Quad
Surrounded by so many iconic buildings and classrooms, the spot itself is already comfortable, with the loud talk and footsteps of students and the nice, soft grass. However, I have to reduce points for the squirrels. If you stay still too long, they climb on your face and bury their nuts in your bags. Not cool.
2. Fauver Stadium
During most of the day, it’s quiet and at a far enough distance from classrooms. Just be on the lookout for sports teams and screaming fans waking you up. You wouldn’t wanna get stepped on by members of the track team in the middle of your beauty sleep, right?
1. The Boats from the Rowing Teams
Why sleep on top of the bridge, when you can nap on the boats. The movement from the boat is so slow that you can barely feel it. And here’s another bonus: You also get to wake up in a surprisingly new location every time. If you’re lucky, you could even take that dream cruise to Canada, right by the ocean as you sleep.
With the top three spots for all types of nappers, I suggest everyone drop everything and find a spot to nap. Good luck and sweet dreams. Wake me up again in an hour. YAAWWWNNNN! ! !
21. What do Eastman Quad and Fauver Stadium share?
A. Both have soft grass. B. Both have sports teams.
C. Both are near classrooms. D. Both are pleasant but noisy.
22. Why are the boats special for napping?
A. Custom spaces. B. New locations.
C. Total quietness. D. Complete privacy.
23. What tone does “YAAWWWNNNN! ! !” convey?
A. Fun and real. B. Cold and distant.
C. Polite and proper. D. Serious and formal.

Amalia Garcia Lopez and Carlos Lafuente Picazo, two final-year university students from Spain, have just wrapped up a nine-day trip to Shanghai—a city they might one day consider calling home.
They were participants in the Young Explorer Program, a program designed to bring international members of Gen Z (Z世代) to China and introduce them to Shanghai. The program offers overseas youth the opportunity to experience Chinese culture firsthand and foster people-to-people exchange and mutual understanding.
Twenty-two young people from different cultural backgrounds took part in the immersive journey. Their route included guided city walks and visits to companies and neighborhoods, offering a deep dive into Shanghai’s society and culture. The group explored museums and heritage sites to learn about the city’s history, visited iconic tourist attractions to experience its modern vibe, engaged with traditional Chinese culture in local communities, and discovered thriving business hubs and revitalized (焕发活力的) historic neighborhoods.
All participants described the trip as both enjoyable and rewarding. During the trip, they were particularly impressed by Shanghai’s diversity — describing the city as “cosmopolitan (国际性的) ” and “dynamic”.
“I was coming to Shanghai with the impression that it’s like a city of the future, and so far, I feel like I’m seeing it for real,” said Picazo. “I think Shanghai is a city made for everyone. I’ve seen people from all over the world here, and you can find whatever you need. It has so much to offer to make whoever comes feel comfortable.”
“One thing that surprised me is that Shanghai has a lot of nature, and it is so green,” Lopez said. “It’s the perfect mix between society and nature, and it’s a city that’s growing every day. So, for me it was quite shocking because I think when cities expand, they tend to just get rid of the trees and the nature.”
24. What does the underlined phrase “wrapped up” in the first paragraph mean?
A. ended successfully. B. Packed carefully.
C. Cover ed completely. D. Celebrated joyfully.
25. What is the Young Explorer Program for?
A. Training Gen Z in global business. B. Exploring Shanghai’s natural scenery.
C. recruiting overseas talent for Shanghai. D. Promoting cultural exchange with China.
26. What impressed the participants most about Shanghai?
A. Its affordable living costs. B. Its harmonious diversity.
C. Its advanced transportation. D. Its traditional architecture.
27. How did Lopez’s perception of Shanghai change?
A. From skeptical to confident. B. From simple to complex.
C. From doubtful to appreciative. D. From abstract to concrete.
A 25. D 26. B 27. C
根据文章第一段“Amalia Garcia Lopez and Carlos Lafuente Picazo, two final-year university students from Spain, have just wrapped up a nine-day trip to Shanghai—a city they might one day consider calling home.( Amalia Garcia Lopez和Carlos Lafuente Picazo是来自西班牙的两名即将毕业的大学生,他们刚刚……为期九天的上海之行。这座城市或许有一天会成为他们心中的理想家园。)”可知,来自西班牙的两名即将毕业的大学生,未来某一天他们会把上海称之为家的地方,是因为他们刚刚完成了为期九天的上海之行。结合语境,“wrapped up”在这里应表示“圆满结束”的意思,与选项A“ended successfully(成功地结束)”意思相符。故选A。
根据文章第二段“They were participants in the Young Explorer Program, a program designed to bring international members of Gen Z (Z世代) to China and introduce them to Shanghai. The program offers overseas youth the opportunity to experience Chinese culture firsthand and foster people-to-people exchange and mutual understanding.(他们是“青年探索者计划”的参与者,该计划旨在将 Z 世代(即当今的年轻人一代)的国际成员带到中国,并让他们了解上海。该计划为海外青年提供了亲身体验中国文化的机遇,促进了人与人之间的交流与相互理解。)”可知,他们参加了“青年探险者计划”,该计划主要目的是促进与中国的文化交流,选项D“Promoting cultural exchange with China(促进与中国的文化交流)”符合题意。故选D。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“All participants described the trip as both enjoyable and rewarding. During the trip, they were particularly impressed by Shanghai’s diversity—describing the city as “cosmopolitan (国际性的) ” and “dynamic”.(所有参与者都称这次旅行既令人愉快又收获颇丰。在旅行期间,他们对上海的多样性印象深刻——将这座城市描述为“国际化”的和“充满活力的”。)”可知,上海的多元融合最令人印象深刻,选项B“Its harmonious diversity(其和谐的多样性)”符合题意。故选B。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“One thing that surprised me is that Shanghai has a lot of nature, and it is so green(让我感到惊讶的一点是,上海拥有大量的自然景观,而且这里非常绿意盎然。)”以及“It’s the perfect mix between society and nature, and it’s a city that’s growing every day. So, for me it was quite shocking because I think when cities expand, they tend to just get rid of the trees and the nature.(这是社会与自然的完美结合,而且这是一座每天都在发展的城市。所以,这对我来说相当震惊,因为我认为当城市扩张时,它们往往会摆脱树木和自然。)”可知,Lopez原本对上海的印象可能并不深刻或存在误解,但在实际体验后,他对上海的自然景观和城市发展表示了赞赏和欣赏。因此,他的看法从怀疑或不确定转变为欣赏和赞赏,选项C“From doubtful to appreciative(从怀疑到欣赏)”符合题意。故选C。

When we think about high school’s lasting impact, we often focus on grade point averages, extracurricular activities, and close friendships. But according to a new study, the influence of high school stretches far beyond the teenage years and into our very bodies.
The study tracked a nationally representative sample of individuals who were high school sophomores (二年级的) and seniors in 1980. Researchers followed these participants into their early 50s and found strong links between high school experience and midlife body mass index (BMI). This relationship held even when accounting for college education, academic attainment, and weight during high school itself.
This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial.
So, what parts of high school matter? It turns out that attending private schools, being in high socioeconomic status (High-SES) environments, and enrolling in advanced curricular tracks were associated with lower midlife BMI, especially for women. These factors weren’t just minor contributors; they maintained their influence even after researchers controlled for a host of variables like college degrees and adult income.
Interestingly, popularity during high school also played a role for women. In a society where women and girls face heightened pressure around body image, early social acceptance may help establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals.
The gender differences in this study are striking. For women, both family and school SES, along with popularity, were significantly linked to adult weight. For men, the connection existed but was less pronounced. One possible reason? The cultural landscape. Girls and women often deal with more pressure to be thin and face harsher judgment about their weight than boys and men. These pressures likely strengthen how high school experiences — both academic and social — shape long-term behaviors and self-perceptions.
28. What does the study mainly reveal about high schools?
A. They predict academic success. B. They foster social relationships.
C. They determine career achievements. D. They shape long-term physical health.
29. Which factor relates to lower adult BMI for women?
A. Adult income status. B. High school popularity.
C. College degree level. D. High school sports activities.
30. Why do gender differences exist in findings?
A. Social expectations. B. Economic policies.
C. Educational resources. D. Biological distinctions.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Gender Differences in Educational Environments
B. The Link Between School Grades and Adult Success
C. High School’s Long-Term Impact on Physical Health
D. The Role of Social Activities in adolescent Development
D 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据第三段“This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial. (这项研究认为,高中不仅仅是学习机构,它们还是健康的塑造者。几十年来,我们已经知道教育程度与健康结果有关,包括体重。但这项研究将时间线退回,表明接受教育的过程,尤其是发生在高中的早期阶段,同样至关重要)”可知,这项研究主要揭示了高中对长期身体健康的影响。故选D项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“It turns out that attending private schools, being in high socioeconomic status (High-SES) environments, and enrolling in advanced curricular tracks were associated with lower midlife BMI, especially for women.(结果是就读私立学校、处于高社会经济地位环境以及参加进阶课程,与中年时期较低的体重指数(尤其在女性中)存在关联)”和第五段“Interestingly, popularity during high school also played a role for women. In a society where women and girls face heightened pressure around body image, early social acceptance may help establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals. (有趣的是,高中时期的受欢迎程度对女性也会产生影响。在一个女性和女孩面临更严苛身材压力的社会里,早期的社会认同或许有助于建立更健康的长期习惯与身体审美观念)”可知,对女性来说,高中时期的受欢迎程度也与成年后较低的BMI有关。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The gender differences in this study are striking. 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第三段“This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial.
D
I often catch myself starting my questions to ChatGPT with a “please” and concluding with a “thank you.” Apparently, I am not alone. A survey published in 2024 by TechRadar found that approximately 67% of AI users are also polite and show gratitude toward AI search engines.
When asked whether there’s a cost to all this politeness, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded, “Tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know.” In reality, of course, AI chatbots do not appreciate politeness; they lack consciousness, feelings or a need for social politeness. From a purely practical standpoint, all those pleases and thank you are just flushing money down the toilet.
Still, there may be value that isn’t immediately measurable in showing gratitude toward AI. In his book “The Psychology of Gratitude,” psychologists Robert Emmons write about a 10-week experiment. He divided participants into three groups, asking the first to list things they are grateful for, the second to list daily annoyances and the third to just keep a journal.
He found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, showed stronger emotional resilience (适应力) and were physically healthier. Other studies have also linked gratitude to better sleep, less depression and anxiety, and greater relationship satisfaction.
What’s true of gratitude is also true of kindness and generosity. Psychology professor Sonja Lyubomirsky from UC Riverside conducted experiments where participants performed “five small acts of kindness per week.” She found that these small, frequent acts led to consistent and significant increases in happiness. These modern researchers are rediscovering an age- old wisdom: we should practice doing good regularly, not just for the sake of the people we benefit, but for our own.
So perhaps all of our pleases and thank you to AI have value, even if they cost OpenAI millions of dollars annually. Showing appreciation, even toward a machine, strengthens positive habits of politeness, patience and empathy. In our increasingly digital and automated world, preserving these human qualities may be more valuable than the substantial costs. Ultimately, the one who benefits from our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.
32. Why is the survey mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To present a fact. B. To challenge a belief.
C. To support an argument. D. To illustrate a phenomenon.
33. How does Sam Altman seem to view the cost of politeness to AI?
A. As an educational tool. B. As a necessary investment.
C. As a social requirement. D. As a technical breakdown.
34. What do the experiments find about being polite to AI?
A. It develops positive human habits. B. It improves the AI’s response quality.
C. It brings lasting happiness to the AI. D. It makes people more grateful to others.
35. What does the author mean in the last paragraph?
A. Politeness to AI is meaningless but costly. B. Digital interactions require new polite behavior.
C. Humans benefit more than AI from being polite. D. AI will eventually develop emotional awareness.
D 33. B 34. A 35. C

How to Apologize to a Cat
Oh no. You’ve done something to deeply offend your cat, and now it won’t even let you come near it. ___36___ The following will show you not only how to apologize to your cat, but it will also show you how to do it safely, so that you don’t get scratched.
Determine the offense. What did you do to make your cat so mad at you? Did you make fun of her? Step on its tail? Or did you take its spot on the couch? Knowing what you did wrong will help you decide how to approach your cat. ___37___
Choose a good time to apologize. If your cat is visibly angry, you will need to give it some time before you try to approach it and apologize; approaching too soon may result in getting scratched. Try not to wait too long to apologize, however. ___38___ You can also approach a frightened cat, but do so with caution. If your cat keeps running away from you, consider leaving behind a small treat in a place it can find. This will let it know that you are sorry and still care about it.
Walk slowly to your cat. If your cat runs away from you, it may be still be angry, upset, or frightened. Do not chase after your cat. Instead, try again a few minutes later. ___39___ Having a cat treat ready may also assure your cat.
___40___ Tell it “I’m sorry.” You may even use your cat’s name. Make sure that you are using a soft, calm voice, with a slightly higher pitch than usual. Your cat may not necessarily understand your words, but it will understand your tone. Do not use a loud, shrill voice; cats do have sensitive hearing and you will only annoy your cat.
A. Talk to your cat.
B. Praise and compliment your cat.
C. This will comfort your cat and help it feel safe.
D. Fortunately, it is possible to earn a cat’s forgiveness.
E. Instead, approach the cat as soon as it appears calmer.

故填their。

A Thousand-mile Journey Begins with the First Step
This saying teaches us that every great achievement starts with a single act, emphasizing the importance of courage in turning dreams into reality.
Learning to play the guitar perfectly exemplifies this. For a long time, I was frightened by complex chords and sore fingers, only dreaming of playing a full song. The journey truly began when I decided to practice fifteen minutes daily. That first awkward step built momentum; gradually, those sessions accumulated, and within months, I could confidently play several songs.
Thus, the proverb reminds us that grand visions only materialize when we dare to start. Embrace humble beginnings, for they are the seeds of future success.

I gazed down the frightening snow-covered slope, my heart beating wildly. The accident that took my leg two years ago replayed in my mind, a memory I couldn’t escape. But with my prosthetic leg (假肢) and persistent training, I was determined to return to the slopes.
It was my final training session before the competition. As I practiced the difficult jump, the world went black as I crashed headfirst into the densely packed snow. I rolled down the slope like a man trapped in a washing machine, unable to break free from the tossing and flipping. When I finally stopped, I found my prosthetic leg had been forced out of its place.
“I can’t do this!” I yelled, hammering my leg back into place. I freed myself from the snowboard and struggled to my feet. “Another round?” my coach asked with a soft laugh. He rested his arm on my shoulder as if to comfort me after his teasing. We both stared at the towering slope ahead. Failure loomed over me like a dark cloud — it had beaten me too many times before.
“I can’t handle the landing. This leg drags me down. How am I supposed to compete tomorrow?” I slammed my leg repeatedly with bitterness as tears welled up in my eyes. Every time I fell, I forced myself to get back on my feet so that I could snowboard again, but I had tricked myself into believing that I could return to being a professional snowboarder.
“Just remember: dig your heels in, bend your knees, and keep your arms up. Three steps to the gold medal.” My coach looked me straight in the eyes, his voice firm yet warm. “It’s not your leg holding you back. You’re using it as an excuse.” His words trailing off like droplets of water forming dotted indents in the snow — disappearing into the snow forever but leaving their marks behind.
Paragraph 1: The fateful day finally arrived.

Paragraph 2: The crowd erupted, cheers filling the air.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The fateful day finally arrived. Standing at the top of the competition slope, I felt my prosthetic leg trembling beneath me. The memory of the fall haunted me, but my coach’s words echoed in my mind: “It’s not your leg holding you back.” Taking a deep breath, I repeated the three steps like a mantra: dig heels in, bend knees, keep arms up. As I pushed off, the cold wind whipped against my face, but for the first time, I felt completely in control. When I approached the difficult jump that had defeated me yesterday, I focused on the technique, feeling the perfect alignment of my body through the air.
The crowd erupted, cheers filling the air. I had successfully landed the jump and completed the course with flawless technique. As I slid to a stop at the bottom, tears of joy streamed down my face, freezing in the cold air. My coach ran toward me, his face beaming with pride. “You did it! You conquered your real obstacle!” he exclaimed, pulling me into a warm embrace. In that moment, I realized he was right — the prosthetic leg had never been the problem. My fear and self-doubt were the true barriers I needed to overcome. The gold medal around my neck felt light compared to the heavy burden that had been lifted from my heart.

D. Fortunately, it is possible to earn a cat’s forgiveness.
E. Instead, approach the cat as soon as it appears calmer.
