B In the 2010s 34-year-old Brianne Miller travelled around the world and made a surprising discovery: large amounts of plastic littering the water and doing harm to sea life. Miller knew she needed to do something. Canadians throw out three million tons of plastic waste each year. Groups like A GreenerFuture, which organize litter clean-ups across Canada, think that 33% of what they pick up comes from food packaging. About one third of food produced worldwide goes to waste too, according to a UN study. Miller decided to solve the problem at the source, imagining a shop where both wasteful packaging and the bad habit of wasting food no longer existed. In June 2018, she opened her first zero-waste store in Canada. She named it Nada.Customers can bring their own container, though it’s not necessary: by the front door are “upcycled” glass or plastic containers, free for the taking. Nada sells what you'd expect, all package-free. To offer different goods, Miller buys from 115 local companies. The suppliers must have a duty to reduce waste in their supply chain. The store doesn't try to compete on price. For example, a customer might pay more for their popcorns at Nada, knowing they are organic. The early days of COVID-19 were hard on the business. Nada turned to online ordering and delivery in a very Nada way. Deliveries are made by e-bike and electric car. Food comes in recycled containers, which are collected next time. Those containers do much more than just reduce waste. They get people thinking big.“They’re marked with Nada stickers (标签), so you can see how many times the container has been used,” she says. “If you see them in someone's home, it's certain to start a conversation.” 4. What problem are Canadians faced with? A. Soil pollution. B. Food supply shortage. C. Loss of clean water. D. Waste of food and packaging. 5. What do we know about Nada from paragraph 3? A. It sells unpackaged food. B. Its foods are much cheaper. C. It offers paid containers. D. Its suppliers provide goods as they like. 6. Which of the following best describes the way of food delivery during Covid-19? A. It’s faster than before. B. It costs more money. C. It’s environmentally friendly. D. It allows safe transport. 7. Why can containers cause a conversation between people? A. They can reduce waste. B. They have beautiful stickers. C. They are shared by different people. D. They are given to each other as gifts. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第二段“Canadians throw out three million tons of plastic waste each year. Groups like A GreenerFuture, which organize litter clean-ups across Canada, think that 33% of what they pick up comes from food packaging. About one third of food produced worldwide goes to waste too, according to a UN study.(加拿大人每年丢弃300万吨塑料垃圾。 根据第三段“Nada sells what you'd expect, all package-free.(Nada出售你能想到的所有商品,且全部无包装。)” 故选A。 根据第三段“Nada turned to online ordering and delivery in a very Nada way. Deliveries are made by e-bike and electric car. Food comes in recycled containers, which are collected next time.(Nada以极具自身特色的方式开展线上订购和配送服务。 根据第四段“.“They’re marked with Nada stickers (标签), so you can see how many times the container has been used,” she says. “If you see them in someone's home, it's certain to start a conversation.”(她说:“它们上面贴着Nada贴纸,所以你可以看到这个容器被使用了多少次。”。“如果你在别人家里看到他们,肯定会开始谈话。”)”可知,容器能引发人们交流是因为它们被不同人重复使用。故选C。 C When you praise a dog, it’s listening to not just the words you say but also how you say them. That might not be huge news to dog owners. But now researchers have explored this phenomenon by using an imaging machine to look inside the brains of 13 dogs as they listened to their owners’ voice. The reward pathway in the dogs’ brains lit up when they heard both praising words and an approving intonation (语调)—but not when they heard random (随机的) words spoken in a praising tone or praising words spoken in a flat tone, according to the researchers. “Dogs deal with both what we say and how we say it in a way which is amazingly similar to how humans do it,” says Attila Andics, a neuroscientist in Hungary. When dogs hear speech, he explains, they seem to separate the meaning of words from the intonation. Then the left hemisphere (半球) of the brain deals with meaning, while intonation is dealt with in the right hemisphere. All the dogs in the study were willing volunteers and were trained not to move in the scanner (扫描器). The dogs could get up and leave the machine whenever they wanted. But it was clear to the dogs that their human companions loved it when they did this very easy task. “They were really happy to take part,” says Andics. “The difficulty of the training was that they can’t move more than 3 millimeters in any direction, otherwise we will have to throw out all of the data.” He says most dog owners have experimented with trying to “trick” their dogs by saying nonsense words in a cheerful, happy tone of voice. “I think the big difference here is that they only heard us, and they didn’t see us,” says Andics, because the dogs were inside the machine. “Here, the only information they had was the speech signal. What we saw is that for praise to be dealt with as a reward, when there is no other supporting information, both word meaning and intonation have to fit.” 8. What is regarded as a reward by dogs according to the study? A. Praising words in a flat tone. B. Random words in a flat tone. C. Praising words in a praising tone. D. Random words in a praising tone. 9. How do dogs deal with what they hear? A. Focus more on the meaning. B. Focus more on the intonation. C. Use information from their peers. D. Use the two parts of the brain. 10. What is a hard part of the training in Andics’opinion? A. Looking into the dogs’ brain activity. B. Training dogs to stay still in the machine. C. Keeping dogs separated from their owners. D. Asking dogs to get up and leave the scanner. 11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. Dogs Understand Tone and Meaning of Words B. Dogs Indeed Know How to Praise C. Dogs Can Recognize Owners’ Voices D. Dogs Can Read Man’s Moods 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第二段中的“The reward pathway in the dogs’ brains lit up when they heard both praising words and an approving intonation(语调)(当狗听到赞扬的话语和赞许的语调时,它们大脑中的奖赏通路会被激活)”可知,当狗听到用赞赏的语调说的表扬的话时,其脑内的奖赏通路会被激活,这被狗视为奖励。 根据第三段中的“they seem to separate the meaning of words from the intonation. Then the left hemisphere(半球) of the brain processes meaning, while intonation is analyzed in the right hemisphere.(它们似乎把单词的意思和语调分开了。 根据第四段中的“All the dogs in the study were willing volunteers and were trained not to move in the scanner(扫描器).(研究中的所有狗都是自愿的志愿者,并被训练不在扫描仪中移动)”及“The difficult aspect of the training was convincing the dogs that ‘motionless’ means really motionless. They can’t move more than 3 millimeters in any direction, otherwise we will have to throw out all of the data.(训练的困难之处在于让狗相信‘不动’意味着真的不动。 文章开头通过“When you praise a dog, it's listening to not just the words you say but also how you say them. That might not be huge news to dog owners. But now researchers have explored this phenomenon…(当你表扬一只狗时,它不仅在听你说的话,还在听你怎么说。 故选A项。 D Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater. Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(缺乏). Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs . Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States, a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number. You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks(滴水) in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away. 12. Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater? A. Using river water. B. Throwing batteries away. C Throwing rubbish into lakes. D. Paving parking lots. 13. What can be inferred from the text? A. All water shortages are due to human behavior. B. It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs. C. There is much we can do to reduce family size. D. The average family in America makes proper use of water. 14. The last paragraph is intended to _________. A. show us how to fix leaks at home B. tell us how to run a dishwasher C. prove what drinking glass is best for us D. suggest what we do to save water at home 15. The text is mainly about _________. A. how human activity affects our water supply B. how much we depend on water to live C. why droughts occur more in dry climates D. why paving roads reduces our water 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第一段最后一句“The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.(我们铺设的道路和停车场越多,流入地下成为地下水的水就越少。)” 根据第二段第二句“Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts (干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.(干燥的气候当然比多雨的地区更有可能发生干旱,但无论如何,良好的管理可以帮助确保有足够的水来满足我们的基本需求。)” 根据最后一段第一句“You can take steps to save water in your home. 根据第一段第一句“Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways.(使用过多的水或向河流中扔垃圾是人类使我们的水供应处于危险的明显方式,但我们也以不太明显的方式影响我们的水供应。)” If your dog is anything like mine, she loves rolling (滚) around in grass if she gets any chance. B In the 2010s, 34-year-old Brianne Miller travelled around the world and made a surprising discovery: large amounts of plastic littering the water and doing harm to sea life. A It sells unpackaged food. C When you praise a dog, it’s listening to not just the words you say but also how you say them. Dogs Can Read Man’s Moods D Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. C. Throwing rubbish into lakes. A. how human activity affects our water supply B. how much we depend on water to live C. why droughts occur more in dry climates D. why paving roads reduces our water If your dog is anything like mine, she loves rolling (滚) around in grass if she gets any chance.
