Then three people from the Netherlands decided to do something to save Przewalski’s horses. They bought the horses from zoos and put them in special reserves. When the horses became healthier and learned the skills of living in nature, they went into the wild in Mongolia.
Today, people have realized the importance of protecting Przewalski’s horses. They try their best to protect them and keep their number growing. Now there are about 2,000 Przewalski’s horses in the world. We all hope that in the future there will be a lot more Przewalski’s horses.

From September to February each year, Dazhong Mountain in Chuxiong, Yunnan is home to more than 50, 000, 000 migratory birds (候鸟). People used to call the mountain Daqueshan, which means bird-hunting mountain.
The villagers used to hunt birds on the mountain. Then one year, they couldn’t hear birds singing. People started to worry if migratory birds would return again. In 1984, the Hongtupo Forest Police Station was set up. The officers worked on the mountain, trying to find migratory birds and stop people from hunting them. The job was really difficult. They might lose their way or meet dangerous animals.
The officers also tried to tell villagers the importance of protecting birds and other wild animals. They visited the villagers door to door and helped them with farm work. They even organized activities in schools to get their messages across to children. Now, even children know that birds are to be loved. The mountain is greener, the water is clearer, and more and more animals come to live here. It has become a bird-protecting mountain. Many people have opened bed-and-breakfasts (民宿) for birdwatchers.

Have you ever seen a koala somewhere? Koalas, which are often called koala “bears”, are tree-climbing animals and are seen as national symbols of Australia. However, recently the Australian government has announced (宣布) that koalas are endangered animals across much of the country.
As a matter of fact, the country lost 30% of its koala population between 2018 and 2021, especially in New South Wales, according to a report from the Australian Koala Foundation. If nothing was done, New South Wales’ koalas would die out by 2050, research in June 2020 said. “This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect the cute animals,” Josey Sharrad, a manager with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said seriously.
Koalas are dying out all over the country because of the climate change and the fast development of cities. People have seen some places that look like the moon — with dead and dying trees everywhere.
After WWF-Australia and the International Fund for Animal Welfare called on the government to announce koalas as endangered in April, the government promised they would get more public support and protect koalas’ home — they live in the forests and woodlands.
The Australian government is now doing its best to collect money to protect koalas. On the one hand, it has spent $13 million in helping improve their living places. On the other hand, the government plans to spend another $36 million doing better health research and medical support to further help koala programs over the next four years.
“We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national symbol,” Environment Minister Susan Ley said.
1.What has the Australian government announced recently?
2.When would New South Wales’ koalas die out if nothing was done?
3.Why are koalas dying out all over the country?

【答案】1.Koalas are endangered animals across much of the country. 2.By 2050. 3.Because of the climate change and the fast development of cities. 4.In the forests and woodlands. 5.They may have better living places./They may get more medical support./They may get more public support./They may have a better life (in the wild)./They will be well protected./They may not die out very soon. Because the Australian government is trying its best to help koalas./Because the Australian government spends a lot of money helping koalas. /Because the Australian government is /people are paying close attention to koalas.

Twenty years ago in Costa Rica, three girls found a baby sloth (树懒) on a road. The little animal’s mother was killed by a car. These girls took the baby sloth to Judy, the owner of a hotel. Judy wanted to help, but she didn’t know how to look after the sloth, so she called the zoo. With the help of the zoo, Judy took good care of the baby sloth. She named the baby sloth Buttercup.
After her first success, more people brought Judy wounded (受伤的) sloths or baby sloths they found. Judy then opened a help centre. Today, the help centre has saved more than 500 sloths.
Sloths live in the forests of Central America. We can also see them in South America. They hang onto the trees with their claws (爪子). There are two main types of sloths. You can know them by the number of their claws. Sloths hardly move. They spend most of their time sleeping in the trees.
But now, with the increase of population, human beings cause a lot of problems for these slow and quiet animals. The main problem is that the forests are becoming smaller and smaller. When trees are cut down, sloths will fall and hurt themselves. Some sloths live near human beings and they sometimes are hit by cars or killed by dogs.
1.Why did Judy call the zoo?

On the Hunt:
When ice is on the ocean, the polar bears are on the hunt. They are hunting seals.
Polar bears need the ice. They can’t catch seals as well in the water, where there is no ice.
In summer, some of the sea ice melts. Now, however, the sea ice is melting earlier than it used to melt. There is not as much time for the polar bears to hunt for food.Hungry Bears:
When it is summer, the polar bears come onto the land. They should have enough fat in their bodies to keep them from getting hungry. Some polar bears, however, haven’t been able to get enough to eat. By the end of summer, they are starving.
If a polar bear has cubs, the mother might not have enough food for them. This means that not as many cubs will survive to be grown bears.Polar Bear Jail:
Some bears are so hungry they wander into towns looking for food. They have been found digging in rubbish dumps.
In a town called Churchill, in Canada, there is a polar bear jail.
When someone sees a polar bear too close to town, it is caught and taken to the jail. The bears are kept in the jail until they can be put safely back on the ice.Learning About Polar Bears:
Scientists want to learn all they can about polar bears and how they can help them.
To help the bears, they have to do tests. This means getting close to the bears. It is very difficult, however, for scientists to get close to them.
Scientists fly in a helicopter over the places where polar bears live. When they spot a bear, they shoot a dart at it. The dart makes the bear go to sleep.Testing Polar Bears:
While the bear is asleep, the scientists can do their tests.
The most important test is the fat test. If the bear hasn’t eaten for two months, it won’t have enough fat to live on.
Scientists put a tattoo on the bear so they can track it. They also mark the bear with spray paint. Then they won’t bother that bear again until the next year. The Future:
Many people are worried about the melting ice. Polar bears have to go further and work harder to find food. If the ice keeps melting, one day there might not be any polar bears.
Scientists want to protect polar bears and the places they live. Polar bears have an important place in the world.
1.What is the influence on polar bears when sea ice melts earlier than before?
2.Why is there a “polar bear jail” in Churchill, Canada?
3.How do scientists safely get close to polar bears for research?
4.Only depend on its own fat, how long can a polar bear live?
5.As a student, list one piece of advice on protecting polar bears.

Not all penguins live in cold places. African penguins live in the south of Africa. Like other penguins, African penguins spend most of the day feeding in the ocean, and that helps keep them cool.
Most other penguins lay their eggs in the open. However, African penguins do it in a different way. They dig holes to lay their eggs so that they are protected from the sun’s heat (高温). The baby penguins stay in the holes for about three weeks. After that, they start going out and return to the holes to stay cool and avoid dangerous animals. On land, some animals, such as dogs and cats, will eat penguins.
African penguins are in danger now. There are only about 52,000 left in the wild. One problem is that they are losing their homes. Other problems include humans picking penguin eggs for sale, competing with humans for fish, and facing the oil pollution in the ocean.

The WWF (世界自然基金会) has warned that climate change is threatening (威胁) the life of the snow leopards (雪豹) in the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山脉). It says rising temperatures cause the natural living places of the big cat to the point that snow leopards could die out. In a new report, it says that up to a third of the areas on the mountain where the snow leopards live could become uninhabitable (不宜居住的). Lots of plants and food the animals need could disappear in warmer temperatures. The WWF said, “The Himalayas area will face danger if we choose not to care about climate change...We will lose the snow leopard.”
It isn’t just climate change that is making a serious threat to the future of the snow leopard. Many activities from humans are also adding to the dangers the animals face. Snow leopards are highly needed for their fur and body parts. People are killing the animals for money. The snow leopards are also being killed by farmers when they are trying to protect their animals. In Africa, hippos live in the rivers.
One day, Karen walked along a river. She counted the hippos. There were not as many hippos as there had been. It hadn’t rained for a long time. Now there was a bad drought and the river was drying up.
The animals that lived near this river had no water or grass. Many of them were dying. People were trying to help other animals. But no one was helping the hippos. The hippos were starving (挨饿). They were coming out of the river to look for food. There was nothing for them to eat.
Karen put food in the river. Then, she waited. Hippos are not used to being fed by people. She didn’t know what they would do. The hippos, however, were so hungry that they ate the food. Karen made waterholes, but the river dried up more. So, hippo families had to share one waterhole. Sharing was a problem.
The hippo families were not good at sharing. The big bulls began to fight with each other. A hippo was killed in the fight. Karen needed to do something. She wrote letters to people asking for help. Many people sent money to her. Karen had enough money to build a dam (水坝). Now, the hippos had their own space.
Karen has watched and taken care of hippos for many years. She knows a lot about them. It is strange, but hippos like licking crocodiles. She has seen hippos pulling prey off crocodiles, too. Sometimes Karen takes people to see the hippos. She tells them that if a hippo charges, they must run fast and climb a tree!
Hippos can be very dangerous, but they are important. Their big bodies make tracks (足迹) on land. The tracks help other animals to find the waterholes. Hippos keep the grass short. This helps to make a fire break.

Wild animals are our friends, but the number of them is getting smaller and smaller. The following four kinds of animals are in danger now.
Southern White Rhinos (犀牛)
Southern white rhinos mainly live in Africa. They are very large in size. There are two horns (角) on the nose. The front horn is over half a meter long, while the other one is smaller. Some humans kill rhinos for their horns. They sell horns to those who believe horns have magic powers or can treat sickness. It puts southern white rhinos in danger.
Golden Monkeys
Golden monkeys eat fruit and leaves of bamboo. But people are destroying (破坏) the environment where they live. Trees and bamboo are becoming less and less, so golden monkeys have less food to eat.
Elephants
Elephants usually live in groups. Young elephants do not leave the group until they are about 12 years old. Now, the number of them is becoming smaller because people use their living areas for farming and kill them for their ivory (象牙).
Wolves
Wolves are not big and they have grey fur (皮毛). They eat many kinds of animals. Wolves are losing their living areas because people cut down the forests. Soon they will have no home or food.

Have you ever heard of pygmy hippos? Moo Deng is a baby pygmy hippo. She was born in July at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. People like her because she is playful and full of life. Her name, Moo Deng, means “bouncy pork (弹跳猪)”. It is a good name for her fun and lively nature.
Moo Deng’s keeper, Mr Nundee, started posting videos of her on social media when she was very young. These videos made Moo Deng famous. People all over the world enjoy watching videos of her running around, playing with her mother, and trying to bite (咬) Mr Nundee in a funny way. Now Moo Deng has millions of fans. Many people share her pictures and videos online. Some companies even use her pictures to make jokes or sell things like makeup and cakes.
Her fame (名气) brings many visitors to the zoo. Thousands of people come every day to see her. The zoo made shirts, T-shirts, and pants. These clothes all had pictures of Moo Deng on them and were sold out very quickly. The zoo plans to use the money to help look after more endangered (濒危的) animals. The zoo hopes that more people will learn about these animals and want to protect them in the future.
Pygmy hippos are in great danger. Only about 2,500 pygmy hippos live in the wild. They live in the forests in West Africa. Because people cut down trees to make farms and roads, many forests are disappearing. Some people also hunt pygmy hippos for food. This makes it difficult for pygmy hippos to stay safe. The zoo hopes Moo Deng’s fame will help people understand why they should protect these animals and their forest homes.
At the zoo, Moo Deng faces some problems. Some visitors throw water or other things at her. They want her to move or play more. To protect her, the zoo now limits how many people can see her and how long they can stay. The zoo is also setting up a webcam (网络摄像头), so people can watch her online anytime—24 hours a day. When it comes to saving wild animals, few people will think of horses. But there is one kind of horse that is badly in need of help. They’re Przewalski’s horses.
At first, Przewalski’s horses lived in the steppes (大草原) in Mongolia. Because of human activities, they lost their homes and had to move to deserts. However, people still captured (捕获) them. People saw the very last wild Przewalski’s horse in 1969. After it died, there were no Przewalski’s horses in the wild.
Luckily, there were some Przewalski’s horses in zoos. In 1900, an animal trader named Carl Hagenbeck captured a lot of baby Przewalski’s horses and sold them to Europe. Only 53 of the baby horses survived (艰难度过) the trip and they went to zoos there. Although that was terrible, it stopped Przewalski’s horses from dying out.
In the 1970s, there were about 300 Przewalski’s horses left in the world, because fewer and fewer baby horses were born (出生).
1.Where did Przewalski’s horses live at first? (No more than 5 words)
2.When did people see the last Przewalski’s horse in the wild? (No more than 2 words)

The Fairy Penguin (精灵企鹅)
Fairy penguins are the smallest of all the penguins in the world. They live in the south of Australia and in New Zealand.
Fairy penguins weigh (重) about one kilogram. They stand thirty centimeters (厘米) tall. Their back feathers (羽毛) are dark blue and their front feathers are white.
Fairy penguins live on the land and in the sea. They are very good swimmers but they cannot fly. They eat small fish.
Fairy penguins breed (繁殖) on land. The mother penguins lay two white eggs in a hole. The mother and father penguins share the job of sitting on the eggs. When the baby penguins come out, the mother and father penguins bring food from the sea. In eight weeks the baby penguins can have grown feathers. They are soon ready to look for their own food.
Fairy penguins are often in danger. Wild animals eat them, people catch them and they have no place to live in.
If their numbers become too small, these little penguins might leave our world forever.

The Guizhou golden monkey, is one of the world’s most endangered (濒危的) kinds of monkeys, according to UNESCO.
These monkeys only live in the Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve. There, people are looking closely at these monkeys and the different kinds of plants in places where they live. This way, they learn more about the monkeys and how to help them.
For years, Li Haibo, a scientist on animal protection, and his team help these monkeys have babies. From 2018 to 2022, three monkey babies were born with the help of their team. “We used to wait for three years for a baby monkey, but now it only takes two years,” said Li.
Also, Guizhou province started building ecological corridors (生态走廊) this year to protect the home of these monkeys. That means our country is planting more trees that the monkeys like to eat from and live in.
Because of this work, the number of the Guizhou golden monkeys has grown to between 700 and 800, according to the Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve Administration.
1.Are the Guizhou golden monkeys in danger?
2.Where do the Guizhou golden monkeys live?
3.Why do people look closely at these monkeys and the plants around?
4.What do people do to help these monkeys?

“The village has changed a lot, and we don’t hunt birds anymore,” people say. Since people have stopped hunting, the police station now mainly works to save injured (受伤的) wildlife.
1.How many migratory birds live on Dazhong Mountain from September to February?
2.What did the villagers on Dazhong Mountain use to do?
3.What danger might the officers face on the mountain?
4.What do you think we should do to protect the birds? Write 20 words or more.
4.Where do koalas live in Australia?
5.What may happen to koalas over the next four years? Why do you think so?
Although the panda is one of the best-known, best-loved and cutest animals in the world, it lives a solitary (独居的) life. Pandas once lived in a few parts of Asia, including (包括) Vietnam and Burma, but now they live only in some parts of China.
Pandas spend about 12 hours every day eating. They mainly eat bamboo. And they always travel between different places to find fresh bamboo. Also, they eat fruit, other plants and some fish.
Pandas usually live in cold and wet places. Their black-and-white coats keep them warm.
Pandas are very good at climbing. If people or animals run after them, they will climb up the nearest tree very quickly. Their good hearing also helps them to avoid animals who want to eat them.
There are about 1,900 wild pandas left in China. Their main problem is that their living places are becoming smaller and smaller. China has realized this problem and is trying her best to do things for pandas. Now, China has set up some special places which are big enough for pandas to live in.
1.Do pandas live a solitary life?
2.How long do pandas spend eating every day?
3.Where do pandas usually live?
4.What will a panda do if an animal runs after it?
5.What’s the main problem for wild pandas?

2.Where do the sloths live?
3.Can the sloths run very fast?
4.What is the main problem for sloths?
5.What should we learn from the last paragraph?
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
1.Where do African penguins live?
2.What do African penguins spend most of the day doing?
3.How long do the baby penguins stay in the holes?
4.What animals will eat African penguins on land?
5.How many African penguins are there in the wild?
As the natural food of the snow leopards is decreasing, the animals are going into human areas to kill farm animals. The result is that the farmers shoot the snow leopards. The WWF reported this result on Friday, which was the first International Snow Leopard Day.

Hippos need the rivers. And, the world needs hippos.
1.Why were the hippos starving?
2.What did Karen do to help the hippos at first?
3.How did Karen get the money to build a dam?
4.Why are hippos important for the environment?
5.What should we do to protect the animals?
