When autumn arrives in the United States and Canada, you can see one of nature’s greatest scenes—the yearly migration of the monarch butterflies (帝王蝶).
No other butterfly in the world migrates like the orange and black monarchs of North America. They cannot live for long periods in cold weather. For this reason, each autumn around October, the butterflies from Canada travel up to 3,000 kilometers south to spend the winter in warmer locations. Some even fly to the mountains of Mexico. There are so many of them that they almost block out the sky. You can even hear their wings beating.
It usually takes the butterflies two months to reach the south of Mexico. After spending five months there, they head back north in the spring. But not one butterfly finishes the whole round-trip. They lay eggs along the way and die. Three generations of butterflies will live and die during the spring journey alone. The fourth and final generation of the year is born in early autumn and will reach the north. But the butterflies hardly get to rest before starting the long journey south again to Mexico.
The most amazing thing about these butterflies is that they return to the very same trees in Mexico that their great-great-grandparents used the winter before.
However, the populations of this colorful butterfly have dropped in recent years. In 2015, the US Fish and Wildlife Service said that nearly a billion monarchs had disappeared from the overwintering sites (越冬地点) since 1990, reported the Washington Post. One of the main reasons, experts say, is that farmers have used herbicides (除草剂) on plants that the monarchs’ larvae (幼虫) live and feed on.
29. How often do the monarch butterflies migrate?
A. Twice a year B. Once a year C. Once a month D. Twice a month
30. Why do monarch butterflies fly to the south every autumn?
A. To find suitable places to lay eggs. B. To avoid the strong winds in the north.
C. To look for a warmer place to live. D. To look for new types of food sources.
31. What can we know according to the passage?
A. The butterflies spend two months staying in the south of Mexico.
B. When arriving in the south, the butterflies will all stay on one tree.
C. The butterflies that fly back to the north are not the same ones that flew to the south.
D. The butterflies will get to rest before starting the long journey south again to Mexico.
32. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The harm of farm herbicides to monarch butterflies.
B. Special winter homes of monarch butterflies in Mexico.
C. The way monarch butterflies finish their round-trip journey.
D. The migration of monarch butterflies and the dangers they face.
【答案】29. A 30. C 31. C 32. D

Have you ever wondered how numbers first came about? And why are there 10 of them?
Early humans in the Old Stone Age likely counted animals and other objects by carving tally marks on walls, bones or stone. Tally marks were grouped by 5. Each tally mark stood for 1 and each fifth mark was scored through to help keep track. This system was fine for small numbers, but it didn’t really work with large numbers.
As society developed, people came up with different ways of writing down numbers. Many of these systems, though appearing in different countries, were mainly based on tally marks. They created new symbols for each larger number. But even with these systems, it was still cumbersome to write large numbers.
By the 7th century, Indians had perfected the decimal positional (十进位) system, which could describe any number with only ten unique symbols. A key breakthrough of this system was the number 0. Older systems, which didn’t have 0, would leave a blank in its place, making it hard to distinguish between 63 and 603 or 12 and 120. Having and using 0 helped make writing down numbers clearer and easier for everyone to understand.
But why were the numbers known as “Arabic” since they were born in India? Here’s an interesting story behind it. Sometime in the year 771, Arab businessmen took some Indian scholars to Baghdad to help teach them the new set of numbers. After learning the numbers, the Arabs translated the new numbers into their own script that is Arabic. Sometime later, the Arab traders carried a book of these numerals to Europe, where the numbers were translated into Latin. As the world got these numbers from Arabia, these came to be known as Arabic numerals.
33. What do we know about the early counting systems?
A. They were created in India.
B. They all worked with large numbers.
C. All the systems followed old symbols.
D. Many of them were based on the same system.
34. What does the underlined word “cumbersome” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Hard. B. Useless. C. Convenient. D. Practical.
35. Which number became clearer to understand after Indians perfected the decimal positional system?
A. 82. B. 8002. C. 182. D. 821.
36. The new set of numbers is called Arabic numerals because ________.
A. the Arabs invented them B. the Arabs spread them
C. the Arabs lied to the world D. the Arabs kept them to themselves
【答案】33. D 34. A 35. B 36. B
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了数字的起源、早期计数系统的局限,以及印度在 7 世纪完善的十进制位值制,还解释了源于印度的数字为何被称为“阿拉伯数字”。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据“As the society developed, people came up with different ways of writing down numbers. Many of these systems, though appearing in different countries, were mainly based on tally marks.”可知,早期的许多计数系统虽然出现在不同国家,但主要都基于计数符号,即许多系统基于相同的体系。故选D。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“This system was fine for small numbers, but it didn’t really work with large numbers.”以及“But even with these systems, it was still cumbersome to write large numbers.”可知,早期计数系统不适用于大数,后来的系统即便有改进,书写大数依旧存在困难,所以cumbersome与Hard同义,故选A。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Older systems, which didn’t have 0, would leave a blank in its place, making it hard to distinguish between 63 and 603 or 12 and 120. Having and using 0 helped make writing down numbers clearer and easier for everyone to understand.”
根据“Sometime in the year 771, Arab businessmen took some Indian scholars to Baghdad to help teach them the new set of numbers... Sometime later, the Arab traders carried a book of these numerals to Europe... As the world got these numbers from Arabia, these came to be known as Arabic numerals.”可知,这套数字并非阿拉伯人发明,而是他们学习后将其翻译、传播到欧洲,世界从阿拉伯接触到这些数字,故被称为阿拉伯数字。故选B。

Pu’er, a city in Yunnan, is famous for its tea, but did you know it’s also known as the coffee capital of China? Coffee trees grow best in places with a warm, wet climate. Pu’er has long been a top coffee bean producer. The first coffee tree was planted by a Frenchman in 1892, and in 1988, Nestle brought modern coffee farming to the city. Today, coffee is a major industry (产业) there, and Pu’er is home to some of the best coffee beans in the country.
But Pu’er is not just about growing coffee beans. It’s also a place for coffee lovers to experience a complete coffee-making process. Hands-on activities cover everything from picking and roasting beans to brewing and tasting coffee. To achieve this, the city has built more than 20 high-end coffee manors (庄园).
At the Elephant Coffee Manor, for example, you can enjoy a cup of coffee while watching Asian elephants walk freely. Such a scene is not seen very often. “I love sitting here,” says Huang Daxiang, a coffee lover. “It seems like another planet.”
Visitors can also try their hand at picking coffee fruit, making coffee soap and more at other manors. It is said that coffee soap has much stronger cleaning power than ordinary soap. These activities add something special to your trip.
At the same time, Pu’er also hosts coffee-themed events, such as coffee brewing competitions. These events bring baristas (咖啡师) and coffee lovers together. “At the events, I have tasted different coffee flavours and met people from all over the world,” says another coffee lover. “That’s what being a big coffee city is all about.”
As this year’s harvest season begins, it’s likely that Pu’er will draw huge crowds of people.

(C)
B They all worked with large numbers.
A. the Arabs invented them B. the Arabs spread them
C the Arabs lied to the world D. the Arabs kept them to themselves
(D)
