Morten Holm, a 56-year-old Danish architect, showcases the dynamic lifestyle, switching from architect to urban designer, and now operator of a nature school on a suburban farm. Yet, beneath these varied titles lies one goal: to create urban oases (绿洲) that harmonize city life with nature.
Holm’s first visit to China was a business trip in 2001, which sparked a curiosity that would change his life. “Every morning, I would sneak out to explore the city before the meetings,” he recalled. The busy streets, the bit chaotic yet lively hutongs, and the city’s transformation appealed to him.
Ten years later, Holm resolved to relocate to China, selling his share in his architectural firm and setting up a new partnership in China “to understand and learn from or even be part of the country’s rapid development”.
Archiland, the design company Holm partnered with, now operates across several Chinese cities, focusing on sustainable architecture and urban design. Among the projects he has undertaken in China, the renovation (翻新) of Beijing’s Liangma River stands out of the most impressive one to him.
For Holm, the renovation of the Liangma River was to create a “soft living space”, boosting local businesses and enhancing residents’ quality of life. “When urbanization reaches a certain level, it’s not just about quantity — more routes and housing — but about making life in the city more livable, increasing the quality of life, and making people happier,” he said.
But Holm’s vision extends beyond urban projects. In 2020, he and his wife transformed his in-laws’ orchard (果园) into an organic farm and green school called FunFarmFam, inspired by Denmark’s green education models. “The ‘Green School’ has become a beacon for urban families seeking a connection with nature,” he said.
Holm sees similarities between China and Denmark, noting a shared practical approach to development and the potential for cooperation. “The cooperation can be very fruitful in areas, including agriculture, green economy, and urban livability,” he said.
4. Why did Holm decide to move to China?
A. He had sold his share in his company. B. He received a job offer from Archiland.
C. He wanted to engage in China’s development. D. He was struck by the charm of hutongs in Beijing.
5. What was the main goal of the Liangma River renovation project?
A. To boost transport capacity. B. To extend business districts.
C. To promote the city’s livability. D. To construct more apartments.
6. What’s special about FunFarmFam?
A. It has become a tourist attraction. B. It focuses on high-tech agriculture.
C. It is mainly intended for rural kids. D. It integrates farming with education.
7. What can be inferred about Holm according to the text?
A. He prioritizes economic development.
B. He is indifferent to people’s quality of life.
C. He explores his cultural identity through traveling.
D. He advocates including nature in urban development.
C 5. C 6. D 7. D

根据第三段“Ten years later, Holm resolved to relocate to China, selling his share in his architectural firm and setting up a new partnership in China “to understand and learn from or even be part of the country’s rapid development”.(十年后,霍尔姆决定移居中国,出售了他在建筑公司的股份,并在中国建立了新的合作伙伴关系,“以便了解并学习中国快速发展的进程,甚至融入其中”)”可知,霍尔姆决定移居中国是因为他想参与中国的建设发展。
根据第五段“For Holm, the renovation of the Liangma River was to create a “soft living space”, boosting local businesses and enhancing residents’ quality of life.(对于霍尔姆来说,对亮马河的翻新旨在打造一个“舒适的生活空间”,促进当地商业发展并提升居民的生活质量)”可知,亮马河改造工程的主要目标是旨在提升城市的宜居性。
根据倒数第二段“In 2020, he and his wife transformed his in-laws’ orchard (果园) into an organic farm and green school called FunFarmFam, inspired by Denmark’s green education models. “The ‘Green School’ has become a beacon for urban families seeking a connection with nature,” he said.( 2020 年,他和妻子将岳父岳母的果园改造成了一个有机农场和绿色学校,名为“趣农场之家”,其灵感来源于丹麦的绿色教育模式。他说:“‘绿色学校’已成为那些渴望与大自然建立联系的都市家庭的指引灯塔。”)”可知,“FunFarmFam”的独特之处在于将农业与教育相结合。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Yet, beneath these varied titles lies one goal: to create urban oases (绿洲) that harmonize city life with nature.(然而,这些不同的头衔背后隐藏着一个共同的目标:打造既能与城市生活相融合又能体现自然元素的“城市绿洲”)”可知,霍尔姆主张将自然融入城市发展中。故选D。
C
“Individuals of all ages who have empathy (共情) understand that sometimes telling little white lies can protect other people from getting hurt,” says Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist in Connecticut. “Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies because they understand that 100 percent honesty all the time is not beneficial.” A white lie, she explains, spares people from unnecessary hurt.
At the same time Dr. Julia Breur, a marriage and family therapist in Florida, emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the way we respond to someone. The fact is that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you; it’s not just about the person the white lie is being told to. For example, she says someone who always tells others that “all is good” when it comes to a sick parent in an effort to avoid discussions about how serious their health issue really is, can eventually face stressful experiences. When that parent eventually passes away, the person who always gave an “all is good” response ends up emotionally broken.
Sometimes, telling white lies often depends on the situation, Dr. Breur says. For example, consider a woman who has not seen her mother for several months. The daughter has gained noticeable weight, yet the mother responds by excitedly declaring that she looks great. “I emphasize during psychotherapy sessions with my patients that context helps define meaning,” Dr. Breur says. “So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love. Otherwise, white lies — especially when told to avoid personal accountability — can start a cycle of mistrust between people, ultimately compromising integrity,” she adds.
Therefore, it’s important to ask ourselves when it is and isn’t appropriate to deliver the honest truth, and when it’s best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about finding a balance between the two.
8 What can be learned about white lies according to Barbara Greenberg?
A. They are short-lived. B. They are unidentifiable.
C. They are trouble-making. D. They are common.
9. What message does Dr. Breur deliver in paragraph 2?
A. White lies can harm both the liars and the listeners.
B. We must respond to our family members truthfully.
C. It’s wrong to tell white lies to a seriously ill parent.
D. The “all is good” response is effective in dealing with patients.
10. Which of the following white lies may Dr. Breur support?
A. A student claims his homework was left at home.
B. An employee blames traffic jam for being late.
C. A Dad tells his son their lost pet is living happily on a farm.
D. A nurse says she has to work overtime so as to decline an invitation.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. East or West White Lies Are the Best B. Think Twice Before Telling White Lies
C. White Lies Signify Unconditional Love D. Tell White Lies to Show Your Sympathy
D 9. A 10. C 11. B
根据第一段中Barbara Greenberg所说的话“Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies (我遇到的大多数人都会说这些善意的小谎言)”可知,Barbara Greenberg认为大多数人会说善意的谎言,即它们具有普遍性。
根据第二段中“The fact is that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you; it’s not just about the person the white lie is being told to. (事实是,不说真话会让你不愉快;这不仅仅关乎被告知善意谎言的人)”可知,善意的谎言可能会既伤害说谎者,也伤害听者。故选A项。
根据第三段中Breur博士所说的话“So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love. Otherwise, white lies — especially when told to avoid personal accountability — can start a cycle of mistrust between people, ultimately compromising integrity
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“Therefore, it’s important to ask ourselves when it is and isn’t appropriate to deliver the honest truth, and when it’s best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about finding a balance between the two. (因此,重要的是要问问自己,什么时候说出诚实的事实是合适的,什么时候不合适,什么时候最好退一步,给出一个更微妙的回应。通常情况下,你需要在两者之间找到平衡)”可知,文章围绕善意的谎言展开,通过两位心理学家的观点,探讨善意的谎言的普遍性及其双重影响,最终强调需根据情境权衡诚实与善意的平衡。因此,B项“说善意的谎言前要三思”最契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选B项。
D
Four days after Hurricane Ida made landfall, the New Orleans meteorologist(气象学家) Margaret Orr took a break after twelve hours on the air to reply to some of her fans on Twitter. Orr, who has been reporting the weather for forty-two years, is regarded by many residents as a prophet (预言家). Someone asked why the sun always shines before a storm. “And I said, to remind us that the sun will shine again. But I don’t want the sun emoji.” She used a heart instead. The real reason the sun shines before a storm? “Because you’ve often got high pressure right over you, and it’s hot,” she said. “The high moves off to the east and pushes the system our way.”
Many of her workmates were sleeping at the station, but Orr preferred to go home, where she had running water but no electricity. She could handle not having air conditioner. The trick, she said. was to take a cold shower. Not having Internet, though, was a hardship. She said, “I couldn’t check my social media until I got to work, which was annoying.” In the days leading up to Ida (飓风艾达), people contacted Orr through Twitter to get individualized, practical advice. Orr tried to respond to everyone. This dedication earned her great respect from the residents.
Orr has always been fascinated by weather. In 1965, when she was twelve years old, the wind from Hurricane Betsy blew the roof off her family’s house in New Orleans. She remembers going outside and standing in the eye of the storm. “I looked up and saw the sky and saw the stars,” she said.
“Bad weather happens everywhere,” she said. “Every now and then, on Twitter, you’ll see people saying, why do you live there? Well, I live here because it’s my home. This is where I grew up. This is the place I love.” She went on, “After Hurricane Katrina, I thought, could I live anywhere else? And I decided, no, I couldn’t.” She added, “As my daughter said about New Orleans when she was a little girl, ‘I even love the dirt.’”
12. Orr’s explanation about sunshine before a storm can be described as ______.
A. poetic but abstract
B. scientific but tricky
C. strange and inaccurate
D. encouraging and professional
13. Why did Orr find the lack of Internet at home a “hardship”?
A. She couldn’t access weather data for forecasts.
B. She needed online resources for air conditioning.
C. She was unable to respond to people’s questions.
D. She missed watching news about the hurricane.
14. What childhood experience sparked Orr’s fascination with weather?
A. Seeing the stars in the eye of Hurricane Betsy.
B. Reading books about hurricanes at school.
C. Watching weather reports on television.
D. Helping neighbors rebuild after Hurricane Betsy.
15. What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Natural disasters are a common threat all over the world.
B. People online don’t understand her deep love for her home.
C. Emotional attachment is what ties people to their hometown.
D. She decided to stay mainly because of her daughter’s opinion.
D 13. C 14. A 15. C

根据文章第一段中“Orr, who has been reporting the weather for forty-two years, is regarded by many residents as a prophet (预言家). Someone asked why the sun always shines before a storm. “And I said, to remind us that the sun will shine again. But I don’t want the sun emoji.” She used a heart instead. (Orr报道天气已有四十二年之久,被许多当地居民视为预言家。有人问她为什么风暴来临前总是阳光灿烂。她回答道:“我说啊,这是为了提醒我们,阳光总会再次普照大地。不过,我可不想用太阳表情符号。”她用了一个爱心符号代替。)”以及“The real reason the sun shines before a storm? ‘Because you’ve often got high pressure right over you, and it’s hot,’ she said. ‘The high moves off to the east and pushes the system our way.’ (她表示:“风暴前出现阳光的真正原因是什么?‘因为你头顶上常常有高压,天气很热,’她说,‘高压向东移动,把风暴系统推向我们这边。’”)可知,她的解释既科学又专业,同时她用“心”代替“太阳”的表情符号也带有一定的鼓励性。因此,D项“encouraging and professional(鼓励性和专业的)”最符合描述。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“I couldn’t check my social media until I got to work, which was annoying. (“直到上班我才能查看社交媒体,这很烦人。”)”以及第一段中“Four days after Hurricane Ida made landfall, the New Orleans meteorologist (气象学家) Margaret Orr took a break after twelve hours on the air to reply to some of her fans on Twitter. (1965年,她12岁的时候,飓风贝琪的风把她在新奥尔良的家屋顶吹走了。她记得走到外面,站在风暴中心。‘我抬头看到了天空,看到了星星,’她说。)”可知,是她小时候在飓风贝琪的风暴眼中看到星星的经历激发了她对天气的兴趣。因此,A项“Seeing the stars in the eye of Hurricane Betsy.(在飓风贝琪的风暴眼中看到星星。)” 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“‘Bad weather happens everywhere,’ she said. ‘Every now and then, on Twitter, you’ll see people saying, why do you live there? Well, I live here because it’s my home. This is where I grew up. This is the place I love.’(“糟糕的天气到处都有,”她说。“时不时地,在推特上,你会看到有人说,你为什么住在那里?嗯,我住在这里是因为这是我的家。这是我长大的地方。这是我爱的地方。”)”可知,作者想传达的信息是情感依恋是人们与家乡联系在一起的原因。因此,C项“Emotional attachment is what ties people to their hometown.(情感依恋是将人们与家乡联系在一起的东西。)”

There are paid and free apps for phones that allow for longer shutter speeds and multiple exposures: search “manual camera” in your app store.
Arrive early to find a proper location
____17____. Are there buildings nearby to give your image context? Will the fireworks reflect into the water when they go off? Manually set the focus for your scene before it gets dark. Focus on an area of sky where the fireworks will be. ____18____.
Consider people in your composition
Take time to turn around and make some images of onlookers. ____19____, think about interesting ways to show his or her shape against the bright fireworks. When people are the main subject of your shot, expose for the faces, rather than the light source, to avoid fooling the light meter.

Fourteen-year-old Nathan ran a small stand selling colorful phone cases at the annual community Summer Carnival (嘉年华). While younger kids crowded around other attractions, he focused on his modest business. His real ambition, however, lay beyond this: he dreamed of owning a 3D printer. With it, he could design and create unique phone cases himself, transforming his small summer job into a proper online business.
One afternoon, a 10-year-old girl named Michele stopped by and bought one phone case for her mom. As they talked, Nathan shared his dream of having a 3D printer. “With that printer, I can print anything in any form,” Nathan said. “Anything in any form?” Michele’s eyes lit up with sudden excitement. “Once you get it, could you please make a leg for my pet duck Tim? Because he was missing one,” Michele said hopefully. “That’ s a cool project,” Nathan replied. He thought for a minute. “I’ll make him one, but it won’t be ready now. I have to save up some of the money myself to buy the 3D printer.” “How lucky Tim is! You are so kind!” Michele said happily, unable to contain her excitement.
Before leaving, Michele exchanged phone numbers with Nathan. They discovered that they lived in the same neighborhood, which meant Nathan could easily get close to the duck and measure the size of its leg in person to ensure that a suitable prosthetic (假体的) leg could be made. He promised to reach out as soon as he could afford a printer.
That evening, Nathan told his family about Michele and his promise. His parents praised his kindness and initiative. They agreed to offer some financial support to buy the printer but also emphasized the importance of his own effort. “We’re proud you’re earning this yourself, Nathan,” his father said. “Saving your share shows real commitment.” Nathan nodded firmly, feeling more determined than ever.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

However, creating the leg model was not easy.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nathan worked very hard for the 3D printer. He continued to sell phone cases at the carnival and even took on some odd jobs around the neighborhood. He saved every penny he earned, carefully keeping track of his progress in a notebook. Weeks passed, and finally, Nathan had saved enough money to buy the 3D printer. He was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to start working on Michele’s project. Moreover, he also shared his excitement with his friends, who were all very supportive of him.
However, creating the leg model was not easy. Nathan faced many challenges along the way. He had to take precise measurements of Tim’s remaining leg and do a lot of research to understand how a prosthetic leg should be designed. He spent countless hours tinkering with the printer, adjusting the settings, and trying different materials. But he refused to give up. Finally, after many tries, he created a leg that fit Tim perfectly. Michele was overjoyed when she saw it, and Nathan felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. His hard work had paid off, and he had not only fulfilled his promise but also gained valuable skills and experience.

“Individuals of all ages who have empathy (共情) understand that sometimes telling little white lies can protect other people from getting hurt,” says Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist in Connecticut. “Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies because they understand that 100 percent honesty all the time is not beneficial.” A white lie, she explains, spares people from unnecessary hurt.
At the same time, Dr.
8. What can be learned about white lies according to Barbara Greenberg?

Fourteen-year-old Nathan ran a small stand selling colorful phone cases at the annual community Summer Carnival (嘉年华). While younger kids crowded around other attractions he focused on his modest business.
