If you’re looking for community service hours, we have you covered. Online tutoring (辅导) through IGivelHappy is a great opportunity. We have volunteer positions for high schoolers, college students, retirees and working professionals, allowing you to teach students online from any location with open schedules you can set yourself.
Who can become a tutor?
Just about anyone can become a tutor, from high school students to retirees. If you can work on basic reading and math skills at a beginner level, there’s a good chance we can pair you with a student who is a good fit.
We require all tutors to be at least high school age, and we ask some additional questions in the application to make sure you’re a good fit for the program.
No past experience is needed! We welcome anyone passionate about helping students succeed, and we provide you with resources to help you get started.
What are the duties of a volunteer tutor?
Tutors work one-on-one with students online, helping with homework, learning skills, and confidence-building. We ask tutors to agree to do at least 1 — 2 sessions per week with their students for at least 4 months (a term), as regular, long-term tutoring has been shown to be the most effective way to support learning. In June’s room stands a bright blue clay vase (花瓶). It is not perfect, showing fine lines from being repaired. It tells a story of two girls’ friendship.
Amy and June came across each other while traveling with their fathers. Midway, Amy gave June a bright blue clay vase. It was a small gesture, but a simple friendship between two 4-year-olds began.
Years flew by. The girls grew up together, becoming the closest friends. However, people change as they grow up. As Amy’s interests grew, she started to ignore June. Though hurt, June was still there when Amy needed support. But Amy brushed off June’s problems with “Later”.
Finally, June couldn’t take it anymore and invited Amy to her house, hoping to figure their problem out. Instead, a terrible quarrel broke out. “What am I to you? A friend or just a convenience?” June cried. To her shock, Amy screamed back. “June, I hate you!” With these words, Amy stormed out and shut the door hard. The blue vase fell from the shelf by the door and crashed into pieces. A ten-year friendship was broken.
One year passed. On her fifteenth birthday, June only felt sad. She remembered her happy fourteenth birthday with Amy. With bittersweet tears, she could still remember the image of four-year-old Amy holding out the blue vase to her. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
At the doorstep stood Amy, holding a small package. “I’m so sorry for how I’ve treated you.” She said, handing the package to June. June opened the gift. Inside was the blue clay vase, gently put back together with care. A letter from Amy read: “I’ve fixed the vase, just like I hope to fix our friendship. I promise to be there for you and cherish our friendship.” June and Amy smiled at each other, feeling the quiet strength of a friendship renewed. The vase now stands as a symbol of their lasting friendship.

C. Hope is a priceless gift. D. Friend is a second self.

It is a common assumption that to be a computer programmer you need to be very good at math. However, new research from the University of Washington suggests that this is not necessarily the case. The study led by researcher Chantel Prat indicates that being a strong language learner proved to be a much better predictor of a person’s ability to learn programming than having basic math knowledge.
For the new study on coding (编程), Prat wanted to explore what makes someone good at learning a skill that involves working with symbols, like programming. Prat points out that a huge number of jobs now require coding skills, and their importance keeps growing.
In the experiment, Prat’s team brought in 36 adults with no past coding experience. Participants first took a series of tests, including one for modern language talent, which measures natural talent for learning languages. They were also tested on general cognitive (认知) abilities like problem-solving and working memory, as well as their numeracy.
Next, each participant attended ten 45-minute sessions to learn the programming language Python through an online learning platform. After the course, the researchers measured how well each person had learned. They looked at how far participants had progressed in the lessons, their scores on a multiple-choice test about the code’s rules, and their performance in a practical exercise where they had to write a simple program for a rock, paper, scissors game.
The results were striking. Among all the things considered, the language talent test was the single strongest predictor of how quickly and effectively someone learned to code in Python. In fact, when the researchers analyzed what led to the differences in learning speed, language talent explained a very large portion (43%), while numeracy explained only a tiny part (6%).
“This is the first study that directly compares math against communication abilities for learning this kind of symbolic skill, and it showed that language was a much stronger predictor,” Prat said. She believes this finding is crucial for breaking down the narrow stereotypes (刻板印象) of what a good programmer looks like. Ultimately, she hopes this understanding will not only help identify who might be good at coding but also lead to teaching methods that can match different brain styles, making it possible for almost everyone to learn this important 21st-century skill.
28. What can be learned about coding skills from the passage?
A. Past experience plays a key role in learning coding skills.
B. Coding skills are becoming increasingly important today.
C Problem-solving abilities help develop coding skills.
D. Math ability is the main thing for coding skills.
29. Why does the author write the last paragraph?
A. To issue a call to action.
B. To explain the weak points of the study.
C. To compare the methods used in the study.
D. To highlight the significance of the finding.
30. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Coding: The Most Important 21st-Century Skill
B. Coding: A Key Skill Supported by New Research
C. Learning to Code: General Cognitive Skills Hold the Key
D. Learning to Code: Language Skills Matter More Than Math
D
The fear that language is in decline (衰退) is like the story of the boy who cried wolf, with one key difference: the wolf never appears. For a very long time, people have worried that language standards are falling, yet this feared breakdown in communication has never actually happened.
Language has always been and will remain a useful tool for communication. Those who warn about the decline of language often do not know its history. Their worries are usually not about a real decline, but are simply statements of personal preference for the way of speaking they are used to. The idea that language will get worse to the point where we can only communicate with simple sounds is unfounded. The clearest evidence for this is that people have been making the same warnings for hundreds of years.
Many famous writers throughout history have moaned about falling standards. Yet, the very same periods produced some of the greatest works in English literature. And anxiety about standards is not unique to English. Speakers of every language in the world have, at some point, sighed for its future.
The truth is that English like all other languages, keeps changing. The feeling of decline is a false idea created by the speed of this change within our own short lifetimes. Because change often happens between generations, older speakers see the rules they grew up with being replaced by new ones. This can cause cognitive discomfort, which then turns into negative comments. We naturally look for intellectual reasons to explain our personal preferences.
If we could live for centuries, we would see the bigger picture. Language change is not simply a sign of carelessness. It happens at all levels, from vocabulary to grammar. Over centuries, a language can be changed so much that it becomes unrecognizable. However, like a complex (复杂的) natural system, language often maintains a balance. Simplification in one area can lead to greater complexity in another. What stays the same is the main expressive power of the language. You can always say what needs to be said.
31. As for language decline, the author is ______.
A. disapproving B. supportive
C. confused D. indifferent
32. What does the phrase “moaned about” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Expressed dissatisfaction with.
B. Showed curiosity about.
C. Carefully thought about.
D. Paid no attention to.
33. It is implied in this passage that we should ______.
A accept personal differences in language
B. stop worrying about language decline
C. avoid using simplified language
D. protect language from decline
34. What does the author mainly do in this passage?
A. Address a problem. B. Make a comparison.
C. Argue against a view. D. Present facts and information.

The move from middle school to high school brings significant learning and social changes, requiring greater independence in learning and time management. Here are some practical suggestions to help you adapt (适应) smoothly.
First, make an effort to familiarize yourself with the new environment. Attend orientation sessions, and take time to explore the campus — locate key areas such as classrooms, the library, the cafeteria, and administrative offices. Knowing your way around will help reduce anxiety and save time once classes begin.
High school includes more tasks, tests, and projects. Stay organized by using a planner or digital calendar to keep up with deadlines. Do important tasks first and avoid procrastination (拖延). When selecting courses, challenge yourself but also leave room for courses that match your interests, since balance is key to maintaining both school performance and well-being.
Building positive relationships with teachers and classmates is also important. Don’t be afraid to ask teachers for help during office hours or after class. Join clubs, sports, or other activities to meet like-minded students. Remember, staying true to your values and being yourself will help you form true friendships.
Finally, be active in managing your time and responsibilities. Learn to balance schoolwork, activities, and personal time. If you feel stressed, seek support from teachers, parents, or school counselors.
High school is a valuable period for personal growth. By taking an active attitude and building good habits early, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of these important years. Remember that adaptation takes time, so be patient with yourself throughout the process. With strong effort and the right approach, you’ll not only succeed in learning but also develop skills that will serve you well on your journey ahead.

【答案】
Dear Jim,
Thanks so much for sharing your awkward Chinese learning story—it really made me chuckle! I have a similar embarrassing experience from my English learning journey to tell you.
Last semester, our class held a welcome party for the new exchange student. I wanted to say “Could you pass the cake?” but accidentally said “Could you pass the cat?” Everyone froze for a second before bursting into laughter. I felt my face burn with embarrassment. Later, my deskmate explained the pronunciation difference between “cake” and “cat”, which are so similar but mean totally different things.
This incident taught me that pronunciation and word distinction are crucial in English. Small slips can lead to funny misunderstandings, but they also help us learn faster. Hope your Chinese learning keeps getting better—do share more stories with me!
Yours,
Li Hua
