The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes release a large amount of CO2 into the atmosphere. As countries work to reduce their carbon footprints, household energy use — which makes up almost 20% of energy — related emissions — brings unique challenges. Below are the categories of household emissions in 2022.
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and suitable for different types of climates. Although there are different technologies, here are some important innovations leading the way toward a more sustainable future.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Instead of traditional gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground to warm homes, cutting emissions from heating by up to 50%. Maybe hybrid models can work in very cold weather (below 0℃) soon.
SOLAR POWER — Rooftop Change
Solar energy is the easiest renewable energy for homes to use. Thanks to advances in solar cell technology, the cost of solar panels has dropped by 80% since 2010, making them a practical choice in many parts of the world.
SMART GRIDS (电网) — Smarter Electricity Management
Grids run by AI make energy use better, saving extra solar power during peak hours and depending less on fossil fuels.
WIND POWER — Community Microgrids
In windy areas, small-scale wind turbines can provide electricity for local neighborhoods. However, these systems do require space, and land use can sometimes be a topic of debate.
“The scale of this transition is huge,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist at MIT. “Home renewable energy — like solar power and heat pumps — could meet 90% of global household energy needs by 2050 — but only if investment increases by 200% within this decade.” Recent studies show that every dollar spent on green homes now saves five dollars in the future for dealing with climate change. This isn’t just something we need to do for the environment; it’s also necessary for the economy.
1. Which two categories make up over 70% of total household emissions?
A. Space cooling and Water heating. B. Space heating and Appliances & Lighting.
C. Space heating and Water heating. D. Space cooling and Appliances & Lighting.
2. Which technology is the most cost-effective?
A. Heat pumps. B. Smart grids. C. Solar power. D. Wind power.
3. What does Dr. Torres emphasize about the transition?
A. The demand for higher investment. B. The potential of renewable energy.
C. The need for household energy. D. The necessity for the economy.

A burn victim as a child, the Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos is thankful that track gave him a new life as a teen, when he was vulnerable and insecure.
When a pot of hot oil tipped over onto 10-month-old Alison dos Santos, his grandfather’s quick actions saved his life. The permanent scars on his face, chest and arms are reminders of that day. Dos Santos said he often wondered, “Am I different?” His teenage years made things worse. Even his friends would sometimes make hurtful comments about his scars. “I had to go through some dark times, but I had to understand that I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t have the burns,” he said.
His track friends, however, saw him another way — not as the guy with scars, but as a nice person with a good sense of humor who could really run. That helped Dos Santos create a different kind of life. He now travels the world, winning medals in the highly competitive men’s 400-meter hurdles, where he rivals world-record holders and Olympic champions like Karsten Warholm and Rai Benjamin.
Dos Santos believes the progress in their event was significantly inspired by Qatari hurdler Abderrahman Samba. When Samba broke 47 seconds in 2018, he changed the mentality: Everything is possible. “When you see Samba doing that, you think, I’ve got to train harder,” Dos Santos explained.
Just as Samba inspired him, Dos Santos hopes his own story serves as an inspiration. He sees a connection between the hurdles on the track and the obstacles he overcame in life. “I’m able to share that everyone is unique, everyone is special in their own way,” he said. “You can achieve great things, no matter how hard things are in your life.”
4. Why was Dos Santos’s teenage years harder?
A. He failed to win any track competitions. B. He was laughed at by his friends.
C. He was often troubled by family economy. D. He couldn’t keep up with his friends.
5. What helped Dos Santos make achievements in sports?
A. The recognition from his track friends. B. The attraction of his personality.
C. The experience from traveling around. D. The encouragement from an Olympic champion.
6. What does the underlined word “mentality” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Progress. B. Effort. C. Method. D. Belief.
7. What does Dos Santos’ experience show?
A. Knowledge is power. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Still waters run deep. D. Recognition makes a difference.

Walk down a street years ago, and chances were good that you’d come across a vision of the Spielbergian sort: groups of school-age children racing down the block on bikes, full of purpose and without helmets. You’re less likely to catch that kind of view today.
With the decline in cycling, kids are losing more than a potential mode of transport. Biking improves children’s independence and overall health. And crucially, once kids are trained, it doesn’t require much effort from adults. Moreover, when enough children bike, whole neighborhoods can be transformed-safer and more friendly.
Now kids seldom get out. But they desire mobility while threatening traffic and parental concerns frequently stand in their way. This fear is reasonable. Roadways have gotten faster and busier. The annual child cycling deaths have actually dropped. The decrease is due to parents being aware of the greater danger from massive vehicles, rather than streets are safer.
Families haven’t always had to be this watchful. Public planning in previous decades may not have had marked bike lanes (车道) or other protective road features. But children had more space to wander, and fewer and slower cars to deal with. It wasn’t until public planning prioritized cars that children lost both play areas and the freedom to travel independently.
By adding more bike-friendly infrastructure (基础设施), local governments could encourage children to ride again. Meanwhile, teaching road rules falls largely to parents. Finding safe-enough places for practice might be tough, yet with a little creativity, parents can choose dead ends or unused parking lots.
Putting in that work may demand more of parents in the short term. But the investment is worth it. Many parents want to raise confident and adaptable children, yet over-scheduled extra-curricular (课外活动) requiring constant monitoring rarely help. What many need is a bit more freedom: time to explore, to ride aimlessly-until they’re ready to take off.
8. What does the author want to express in Paragraph 1?
A. Kids liked riding bikes in the past. B. Children’s biking is less common today.
C. Spielbergian scenes were everywhere. D. School-age kids like racing down blocks.
9. What is the possible result of the decline in children cycling?
A. Roadways become faster and safer. B. Bike lanes are removed.
C. The burden on parents increase. D. Neighborhoods are more friendly.
10. What can be inferred about public planning in previous decades?
A. It put bikes in the first place. B. It offered kids safer places.
C It marked bike paths. D. It built many parking lots.
11. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Kids Freedom on Two Wheels. B. The Joy of Children’s Biking.
C. Ways to Protect Child Cyclists. D. The Needs for Safer Street.
D
It’s hard to imagine that global warming would have much effect on the world’s hot and dry deserts. But even small changes in temperature or rain can affect desert plants and animals. In some cases. global warming is predicted to increase desert lands, which already cover one-fifth of Earth’s land.
Deserts are important to people. More than one billion people live in greater dry lands. For many of them, deserts provide food and useful resources. The dry environment is also ideal for protecting archaeological artifacts and fossils Besides, deserts help reduce sandstorms with biocrust — a top layer of soil with tiny living things that hold the soil together.
However, global warming is making droughts happen more often, which dries up water holes. Using water for irrigation (灌溉) over a long time may make the soil have too much salt, so plants can’t grow there. Higher temperatures may cause more wildfires, and these fires can change desert areas by killing plants.
When people use off-road vehicles carelessly, they can damage desert homes for animals. Oil and gas production and nuclear testing can also do harm to these sensitive areas. Some human activities — like collecting firewood and grazing animals — are turning dry lands into deserts. This process is called desertification. Population growth and greater demand for land make it hard to solve this problem.
Luckily, despite these challenges, there are ways to protect deserts. We can use water more efficiently and control salinization better to improve dry lands. We can find new ways to grow different crops in turns to protect the soil, and plant bushes and trees that hold sand. Leguminous (豆科) plants can make the soil fertile again. Artificial grooves (凹槽) can help keep rainwater and catch seeds. Tourism can be managed better too. Creating marked trails and roads can help prevent travelers from damaging the delicate biocrust, an often overlooked desert threat.
12. How does the author develop his idea in the second paragraph?
A. By giving specific examples. B. By explaining a concept.
C. By quoting an expert. D. By providing data.
13. What leads to the soil in dry areas being too salty?
A. Plants. B. Water holes. C. Irrigation. D. Wildfire.
14. What is the author’s suggestion about?
A. Management of tourism. B. Solutions to protecting dry areas.
C. Improvement of the soil. D. Protection of agriculture.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of dry areas?
A. Hopeless. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Worried.

The state cross-country race was very hard, with mud, hills, and a cold wind. For me, a high school senior hoping for a college sports scholarship, this race was very important. The starting gun fired, and runners in colorful shirts rushed forward. I found my speed, but it was a difficult and painful pace.
The first two miles were a blur of pain. My lungs burned with every breath of cold air. When we reached the famous “Killer Hill” — a long and soul-crushing slope — many runners slowed down. I pushed very hard and passed a few tired competitors. For a short moment at the top of the hill, I even thought I could finish in the top ten.
But the effort cost me everything. The flat ground after the hill felt like running through concrete. I had a sharp pain in my side. My legs, once strong, now felt like heavy wood. The sound of the crowd in the faraway stadium seemed to laugh at me. I hit my limit, not just in my body, but in my mind. A voice in my head said with every step, “Just stop. Slow down. It’s okay to give up.”
One by one, runners I had passed earlier began to pass me. Their heavy breathing and footsteps felt like the end of my dream. With each person who passed, my will to continue broke a little more. The finish line seemed a million miles away. I was drowning in tiredness and ready to accept defeat. My goal was disappearing, and I had no strength left to fight for it.
It was at my lowest point, as I looked down at the ground, fighting tears of pain and disappointment, that I heard steady, strong footsteps coming up behind me.

B 5. A 6. D 7. D

根据第二段中“His teenage years made things worse. Even his friends would sometimes make hurtful comments about his scars.(他的青少年时期让事情变得更糟糕。甚至他的朋友有时也会对他的伤疤发表伤人的评论。)”可知,多斯桑托斯的青少年时期更加艰难是因为他被朋友嘲笑。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“His track friends, however, saw him another way-not as the guy with scars, but as a nice person with a good sense of humor who could really run. That helped Dos Santos create a different kind of life.(然而,他在田径队的朋友们却以另一种方式看待他——不是把他看作那个有伤疤的人,而是把他看作一个幽默风趣、跑得很快的好人。这帮助多斯桑托斯创造了另一种生活。)”可知,是田径队朋友们的认可帮助多斯桑托斯在体育上取得成就。故选A。
根据第四段中“When Samba broke 47 seconds in 2018, he changed the mentality: Everything is possible.(当桑巴在2018年突破47秒大关时,他改变了这种mentality:一切皆有可能。)”

C. It marked bike paths. D. It built many parking lots.
11. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Kids Freedom on Two Wheels. B. The Joy of Children’s Biking.
C. Ways to Protect Child Cyclists. D. The Needs for Safer Street.
B 9. C 10. B 11. A

根据第一段“Walk down a street years ago, and chances were good that you’d come across a vision of the Spielbergian sort: groups of school-age children racing down the block on bikes, full of purpose and without helmets. You’re less likely to catch that kind of view today. (多年前走在街上,你很可能会撞见一幅斯皮尔伯格式的场景:一群学龄儿童骑着自行车沿着街区飞奔,目标明确,而且没戴头盔。如今,你不太可能再看到这样的景象了。)”可知,作者在第一段想表达现在孩子骑自行车的情况不如以前常见了。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“And crucially, once kids are trained, it doesn’t require much effort from adults. (而且关键的是,一旦孩子接受了训练,就不需要成年人付出太多精力。)”可反向推断,孩子骑自行车减少后,成年人可能需要投入更多精力照顾孩子的出行等,即父母的负担会增加。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Public planning in previous decades may not have had marked bike lanes (车道) or other protective road features. But children had more space to wander, and fewer and slower cars to deal with.(前几十年的城市规划可能没有明显的自行车道或其他保护性道路设施。但孩子们有更多的空间闲逛,需要应对的汽车也更少、更慢。)”可知,前几十年的城市规划虽没有专门的自行车保护设施,但客观上给孩子提供了更安全的活动和出行空间。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Walk down a street years ago, and chances were good that you’d come across a vision of the Spielbergian sort: groups of school-age children racing down the block on bikes, full of purpose and without helmets. You’re less likely to catch that kind of view today. 所以A项Kids Freedom on Two Wheels(两轮间,孩子们畅享自由)符合语境。故选A项。
A. Hopeless. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Worried.
A 13. C 14. B 15. B

故填which。
故填was poured。
故填but。
故填the。
故填about。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
An experienced runner from another school caught up with me.

Hearing his inspiring words, I wiped the tears from my eyes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
An experienced runner from another school caught up with me. “You’ve got this!” he shouted over the wind. “Don’t stop now — we’re almost there!” When I glanced at him, I saw his eyes were clear and determined. He didn’t know me, yet he chose to stay with me at this difficult moment. Suddenly, something inside me changed. It was his courage that lit a small fire in my heart. I took a deep breath, clenched my fists, and decided to keep going.
Hearing his inspiring words, I wiped the tears from my eyes. I straightened my back and pushed forward, ignoring the burning in my legs. The crowd’s cheers, which had seemed to laugh at me earlier, now sounded like encouraging music. Crossing the finish line, I collapsed but smiled. I didn’t know my final ranking, but I knew I had overcome my weakest self. I also learned that when you feel like giving up, a small act of kindness can help you find the courage to keep going.
