Top Four Cities in Africa for a Great Vacation
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Getting around: Taxis are fine; walking is better.
Though Ethiopian food is familiar to a lot of people, on the streets of Addis, it’s all about coffee. Social life in Addis is built on its preparation and consumption. It’s a chance to sit down among a mostly local crowd and order a coffee.
Lusaka, Zambia
Getting around: Taxis are affordable.
This city is known for Victoria Falls. Small shops are lit at night, and they sell everything from newspapers to soft drinks. On the way, there is the outdoor Mingling Bar, where customers can enjoy a can of Original American Cola.
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
Getting around: Taxis are cheap.
Abidjan’s 5 million people are spread out across four areas. When night falls Yopougon is worth heading to. The roads are dusty in the part of Abidjan, but like many cities where living spaces are small, Abidjan lives its life on its streets. Just to the east of Yopougon is the Plateau, the business area. This area’s modernist building is great and mostly the result of a cocoa-and coffee-based economic development in the 1950s and 1960s.
Dakar, Senegal
Getting around: Taxis are plentiful.
Possibly the best thing about Dakar is its beach restaurants: special collections of tables and chairs where customers are served the freshly caught fish. Servers will often offer to run out to a nearby corner store to buy beer and bring it to the table.
1. Where is Victoria Falls?
A. In Abidjan. B. In Addis Ababa. C. In Lusaka. D. In Dakar.
2. What contributes most to the Plateau’s modernist building?
A. Art. B. Coffee business. C. History. D. Population.
3. What is special about the beach restaurants in Dakar?
A. They are self-service. B. They are all about coffee.
C. They serve freshly caught fish. D. They offer free Original American Cola.

Sunita Kumari Chaudhary quietly weaves (编织) together lengths of rope, mixing them with grass collected from the riverbank in her village of Dang. She skillfully shapes the materials into a nice box. As she weaves, she’s teaching a small group of women how to work with the materials.
The ropes that Chaudhary and the others are using were once the lifeline for mountain climbers in Nepal’s mountains and were then tossed. The waste, including the ropes, is now finding new life, turned by skilled hands like Chaudhary’s into items to sell such as boxes and table mats (垫子).
“At first, I didn’t know that these ropes were collected from the mountains,” Chaudhary says as she expertly weaves a blue-colored rope into a heart-shaped box. To her left, a box she made in the same way holds her tools — scissors and metal nails. On the floor are several mats she made, each a mix of golden yellow, purple and blue. “Later, I learned that the ropes were collected during a mountain cleaning project. And people like me, who are far from the mountains, are using our traditional skills to turn this waste into something totally new,” she said.
The Himalayan mountains have been increasingly filled with waste left by mountaineering activities over the years. According to Nepal’s Department of Tourism, on Mt. Everest alone, there is nearly 140.000 tons of waste. In 2019, the government started the project Safa Himal Aviyan led by the Nepal Army. Waste collected from the project is either sent to a landfill if it’s biodegradable (可降解的) or reused if not. Now some of that material is finding its way to the locals like Chaudhary, thanks to the action.
4. How does Chaudhary deal with the collected ropes?
A. She repurposes them. B. She sells them at a market.
C. She repaints them. D. She sends them to a landfill.
5. Which is the closest in meaning to “tossed” in paragraph 2?
A. Picked up. B. Held back. C. Thrown away. D. Checked out.
6. Why did the government start the project?
A. To offer well-paid jobs. B. To clean up the mountains.
C. To practice traditional skills. D. To help foreign tourists.
7. What can we learn about Chaudhary?
A. She used to be a teacher. B. She joined the army in 2019.
C. She sets up the project. D. She is skillful and creative.

Waste collected from the project is either sent to a landfill if it’s biodegradable (可降解的) or reused if not.

It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our lives.
We have just gone through another industrial revolution (变革) with the creation of the Internet. You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now. Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes. It is all mostly good, but some of it has a bad influence as well.
The past years has seen the rise of social media as the source of communication and information. Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet.
But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and unpleasant images are just some of the downsides.
We are seeing young people losing themselves in their screens by checking things on social media or having thoughts of self-harm. Older generations say “just turn off the phone”, but they don’t realize that young people are conditioned to live in that online world and it is impossible to turn it off.
That is why the government is now looking for the prevention by different means. And one of them is raising the age limits for social media users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it.
8. What is the author’s opinion about the revolution caused by the Internet?
A. It will last for a short time. B. It has more bad influences.
C. We can do nothing about it. D. We can see it shaping our life.
9. What is an advantage of mobile phones according to the text?
A. They make it easy to travel alone. B. They are quite cheap.
C. They keep us connected at all times. D. They create new ideas.
10. What does the author want to show by mentioning online bullying?
A. The serious health risk. B. The danger of social media.
C. The mistakes students make. D. The false news on the Internet.
11. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Other harm prevention measures. B. The reason why we take action.
C. Parents’doubts about social media. D. The role the Internet can play.
D 9. C 10. B 11. A

You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now. Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes.
根据第三段中的“Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet. (我们的小手机已经成为我们全天候与世界交流的窗口,人们可以在这里与世界各地的其他人分享经验。)”可知,手机可以让我们随时与世界保持联络。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and unpleasant images are just some of the downsides. (但与大多数事情一样,我们也看到了社交媒体的缺点。虚假新闻的传播、网络欺凌和令人不快的图片只是其中的一些缺点。)”可知,作者提及网络欺凌是为了说明社交媒体的危害。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“And one of them is raising the age limits for social media users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it. (其中之一是提高社交媒体用户的年龄限制。但这是怎么做到的呢?我觉得很有趣的是,我的老一辈婴儿潮一代将试图阻止社交媒体访问,并比这些青少年更聪明。我们都知道谁会赢!但正如我一开始所说的,我们在几代人之后看到了这项技术的影响,我们需要对此做些什么。)”可推断,最后一段阐述了防范社交媒体的危害的措施之一,作者接下来可能会讨论其他措施以防范社交媒体的危害。故选A。

The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. The forests are the insects’ (昆虫) winter home. Their population is now worrisome as the butterfly group is already considered at risk of disappearance.
Mexico’s government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the monarch butterfly presence has dropped to less than a hectare of forest area. In the mid-1990s, monarch butterflies could be found on around 18 hectares of the forest.
The findings show an almost 60 percent drop in the monarch butterfly population compared to last year’s study. It is also the second-lowest population finding since the first study took place more than thirty years ago.
Biologists believe the serious situation is caused by the higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern US where the butterfly reproduces. The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time.
In one of the planet’s famous wildlife migrations (迁徙), the butterflies travel south as far as 4,500 kilometers from places as far north as Canada. They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold.
Monarch butterfly populations change year to year. As recently as 2021, the same study showed a 35% increase to cover around 2.8 hectares. Scientists called for more action to help the insects. Such calls included the need to use less herbicides that may present a danger to milkweed and the need to protect forests. “We can’t lower our guard,” said Jorge Rickards, head of WWF’s Mexico office.
12. How does hot weather influence the monarch butterflies?
A. They fly to as far as Canada. B. They likely have less to eat.
C. They stop living in tall trees. D. They have to feed more babies.
13. We can know that Mexican forests in winter ________.
A. are free from rain B. are full of tourists
C. are rich in wildlife D. are often very cold
14 What do scientists suggest about monarch butterflies?
A. Taking more steps to protect them. B. Stopping them eating more leaves.
C. Studying them as much as possible. D. Checking their number quickly.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A New-found Insect in Mexican Forests
B. The Purpose of the World Wildlife Fund
C. The Secret of Monarch Butterflies’ Travel
D. A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第四段“Biologists believe the serious situation is caused by the higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern US where the butterfly reproduces. The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time. (生物学家认为,这种严重的情况是由于蝴蝶繁殖的美国西北部气温高于正常水平和干燥条件造成的。天气条件会影响马利筋的生长,马利筋是蝴蝶产卵的地方。当幼崽出生时,马利筋是它们的食物。)”可推断,高温天气可能会导致帝王蝶的食物减少。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold. (它们在温暖的墨西哥过冬,在那里数以百万计的昆虫呆在树上,保护它们免受雨水和寒冷。)”可知,冬日的墨西哥森林生机盎然。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Scientists called for more action to help the insects. Such calls included the need to use less herbicides that may present a danger to milkweed and the need to protect forests. (科学家们呼吁采取更多行动来帮助昆虫。这些呼吁包括需要减少使用可能对马利筋构成危险的除草剂,以及需要保护森林。)”可知,科学家建议采取更多措施保护帝王蝶。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. (今年冬天,在墨西哥的森林里,帝王蝶的数量已经下降到有记录以来的第二低水平。)”和第二段中的“Mexico’s government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the monarch butterfly presence has dropped to less than a hectare of forest area. (墨西哥政府和世界自然基金会(WWF)最近公布了他们对蝴蝶的年度联合研究结果。研究表明,帝王蝶的存在已经下降到不到一公顷的森林面积。)”可知,本文主要介绍了一项科研结果——墨西哥政府和世界自然基金会共同开展的一项研究发现帝王蝶数量急剧下降。最佳标题为“A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population (帝王蝶数量大幅下降)”。

故填who/that。

leave impressions on/upon sb. 故填on/upon。

In my childhood, my mother Jean spent her evenings doing things for others. Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. So, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had taken on a new project.
“I am going to telephone the elderly,” said my mother. I asked, “Every day? But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I care.” I was sixteen and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. “They will talk your ear off,” I said.
My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s love for the project. That evening, I listened as she asked Mrs. Peterson, an old woman, about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I asked, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert?” My mother said, “She is alone with no children. I’m the only person she talked to today.” Over the next couple of weeks, Mom fell into a routine (惯例) — she would finish her chores (家庭杂务), sit in her favorite chair by the phone, and make her calls.
One day, the routine broke when Mom had a bad cold. The doctor advised her to get complete rest and said, “No talking, no phone calls.” That evening, the phone sat silent. As I brought Mom soup and medicine, she looked at me with anxious eyes. “It’s Mrs. Peterson’s night,” Mom said. “She’ll be expecting my call.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Her words weighed with a responsibility I failed to understand, yet I picked up the phone.

After the call, Mom said, “I’m so proud of the person you’re becoming.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Her words weighed with a responsibility I failed to understand, yet I picked up the phone. “Hello, Mrs. Peterson! This is Jean’s daughter,” I said, trying to sound warm and cheerful. “My mom isn’t feeling well tonight, but she didn’t want you to wait by the phone.” There was a brief pause on the other end, and for a terrible second, I thought I had said something wrong. Then, the woman’s voice softened with concern, “Oh, please, tell your mom not to worry about me! Wish your mom a quick recovery.” We talked for a few more minutes — about the weather, her favorite program, the soup I had made. It wasn’t a long conversation, but when I hung up, I felt a warm glow in my chest.
After the call, Mom said, “I’m so proud of the person you’re becoming.” A smile naturally appeared on my face. From that day on, I decided to join my mom in her calls. Because I got to understand my mother’s project. It wasn’t just a phone call; it was a promise of care. It was about the profound power of a simple conversation — how a listening ear can turn a lonely silence into a space filled with stories, memories, and most importantly, connection.

When night falls, Yopougon is worth heading to.

A It will last for a short time.
D
14. What do scientists suggest about monarch butterflies?
A. Taking more steps to protect them. B. Stopping them eating more leaves.
C. Studying them as much as possible. D. Checking their number quickly.
15 Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A New-found Insect in Mexican Forests
B. The Purpose of the World Wildlife Fund
C. The Secret of Monarch Butterflies’ Travel
D. A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population
