Why do we universally appreciate cartoons? Because they are visual-the humor unfolds right before our eyes.As writers,we have a unique challenge to craft worlds, including humorous ones, using only words.
At first glance, writers and cartoonists have vastly different toolboxes and skill sets. But if you look closely, you will notice similar devices, such as simplification, exaggeration (夸张),and contrast.
In many literary forms, decoration enriches a piece. That’s not true for humor writing-humor can get lost with too many details.Adding a bit of shading will give depth to an illustration, yet there’s usually no need to detail every feature. There’s a thin line between plain and funny, and the difference often lies in whether a writer adheres to the universal comedic principle,“less is funnier”.By simplifying complex situations, characters, plots, and reactions, your work becomes more digestible and humorous.
Exaggeration is one of the most straightforward and effective comedic tools. As a humor writer, don’t shy away from every chance to stretch the truth, whether by understatement or overstatement. However, effective humor is truth based. The relationship between exaggeration and realism in humor is like stretching a rubber band (橡皮筋).A little stretching, even repeated stretching,is no problem. However, overstretching the band will cause it to break,as well as the humor and the reader’s trust.
Contrasting is the juxtaposition (并列) of elements not usually coupled,a technique that cartoonists use to create humorous mismatches by placing significantly different elements side by side.As writers,we can use juxtaposition to brainstorm new humor angles and create funny mismatches.
Humor is at its funniest when it’s visual, and writers can craft more humorous material by employing the same techniques used by cartoonists.By thinking and writing visually, you can show the funny to readers.

It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways;that they do not trust their children to deal with crisis;that they talk too much about certain problems;and that they have no sense of humor,at least in parent-child relationships.
I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.
Young people often annoy their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles,in the entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then it turns out that their music or entertainers or clothes or hairstyles annoy their parents. This gives them additional enjoyment. At least in a small way, they are leaders in style and taste.
Sometimes you are proud, because your parents can’t change what you do.If they do approve,it looks as if you are betraying (背叛) your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are an underdog:you can’t win,but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years if you were completely under your parents’ control in your childhood. But it ignores the fact that you should be responsible for yourself.
From my teaching experience for ages,I want to give you young people the following advice that perhaps can help deal with the generation gap properly. If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can charm your parents into doing things the way you want. You can impress them with your sense of responsibility,so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.
5.What can we know from the young people’s views in Paragraph 1?
A.Parents are lacking in humor and like talking a lot.
B.Parents always know much and keep pace with the times.
C.Parents should be responsible for all the misunderstandings.
D.Parents believe their children’s ability to solve any problems.
答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中“They have always complained...at least in parent-child relationships.”可知,年轻人认为父母缺乏幽默感并且喜欢说很多话。故选A。
6.What can be inferred about the young people in Paragraph 3?
A.They find extra fun from their annoying actions.
B.They are quite content to be away from the adult society.
C.They make full use of their music to speed up their lives.
D.They always annoy their parents in order to enjoy music.
答案:A
解析:推理判断题。根据第三段中“This gives them additional enjoyment. At least in a small way, they are leaders in style and taste.”可推知,年轻人从他们令人恼怒的行为中找到了额外的乐趣。故选A。
7.Which of the following is the closest to the meaning of the underlined word “underdog” in Paragraph 4?
A.Lovely dog. B.Failure.
C.Partner. D.Looker.
答案:B
解析:词义猜测题。根据第四段中“If they do approve,it looks as if you are betraying (背叛) your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are an underdog:you can’t win,but at least you can keep your honor.”可知,此处表明如果你按照父母的意愿行事,会让同龄人觉得你是背叛者,而你却认为自己虽败犹荣,因此画线词“underdog”在此处意为“失败者”,B项与画线词意思最相近。故选B。
8.What does the author do according to the text?
A.A capable chef. B.A famous writer.
C.A senior teacher. D.A trusted entertainer.
答案:C
解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段中“From my teaching experience for ages,I want to give you young people the following advice”可推知,作者是一名资深教师。故选C。

A humanoid robot can predict whether someone will smile a second before they do,and match the smile on its own face. The creators hope the technology could make interactions with robots more lifelike.
Although artificial intelligence can now mimic human language to an impressive degree, interactions with physical robots often fall into the “uncanny valley”,in part because robots can’t copy the complex non-verbal cues and mannerisms that are vital for communication.
Now,Hod Lipson at Columbia University in New York and his colleagues have created a robot called Emo that uses AI models and high-resolution cameras to predict people’s facial expressions and try to copy them.It can anticipate whether someone will smile about 0.9 seconds before they do,and smile itself in sync.“I’m fed up with robots because I deal with them every day,but I smile back at this robot,” says Lipson.
Emo consists of a face with cameras in its eyeballs and flexible plastic skin that has 23 separate motors attached to it by magnets. The robot uses two neural networks:one to look at human faces and predict their expressions and the other to work out how to produce expressions on its own face.
The first network was trained on YouTube videos of people making faces, while the second network was trained by having the robot watch itself make faces on a live camera feed.“It learns what its face is going to look like when it’s going to pull all these muscles,” says Lipson.“It’s sort of like a person in front of a mirror, when even if you close your eyes and smile, you know what your face is going to look like.”
Lipson and his team hope that Emo’s technology will improve human-robot interactions, but they first need to broaden the range of expressions the robot can make. They also hope to train it to make expressions in response to what people are saying, rather than simply mimicking another person.

Do you have an uncle believing vaccines cause autism (自闭症) but refusing to do further research? What about a friend avoiding information about factory animal farming so he can eat cheap meat guilt-free?
Each is an example of willful ignorance-the intentional act of avoiding information that reveals the negative consequences of one’s actions. To find out why people engage in it,a team of researchers performed an analysis on the evidence of willful ignorance, comparing the results of 22 studies with over 6,000 participants.
Participants were randomly assigned the role of decision-makers or recipients (接受者).The decision-makers were given a choice:They could take a $5 or $6 payout. If they took $5,the recipient would also receive $5.If they took $6,the recipient would receive $1.Most decision-makers acted altruistically. They made a slight sacrifice to give the recipient more money. On average, only about a quarter of decision-makers acted selfishly.
In another study, the decision-makers could still choose between the $5 or $6 payouts, but they were not told what the recipient would receive. There was a 50-50 chance the recipient would receive $5 or $1.Importantly,the decision-makers could ask the researchers what payout the recipient would receive, and they could do so at no cost to themselves.44% of decision-makers chose to remain willfully ignorant and took the selfish option.
The researchers assumed two potential motivations for willful ignorance.First, they thought willful ignorance may offer an excuse for not acting generously. If a person doesn’t know the consequences of his actions, then he still can consider himself a morally honest individual even if he decides to act selfishly.Willful ignorance serves to protect his self-image.
The second potential motivation is “cognitive inattentiveness”. That is,people dislike thinking more than they have to.It may result from laziness, not paying attention,or not wanting to take the time to learn more.Whatever the case, they favor the quick-and-easy decision.
The researchers conclude “taken together, the evidence suggests ignorance is indeed in part ‘willful’ and driven by excuse-seeking and self-image maintenance motives.” Thanks to them,we are all a little less ignorant about ignorance.
